Hi Dan: I agree in that I think we are staring into War because of the evil of dictatorships.

Even the most cursory examination of the nature of dictatorships in world history reveals one significant commonality: the incredible loss of life, the vast majority of which are non-combative civilians. During our present lifetime, three dictators stand out, Adolph Hitler, Heinrich Himmler, and Josef Stalin. Of these, the first two were almost successful in eliminating Jews from the human race. The third was concerned with eliminating Russians who disagreed with its policies designed to enthrone the Soviet Union as the supremely most powerful nation in the world.

As most of us know, the fall of the Soviet Union was the result of its attempt to maintain and exceed military superiority over the United States. The economic engine of the Soviet Union was simply not up to the task. One of the major components of the Soviet Union was the Ukraine. Very few people are aware of the immense resources of the Ukrainian nation of Europe, such as oil and gas, iron ores and deposits of manganese, titanium, aluminum, together with deep deposits of coal, salt, and sulfur. In addition, the surface soils are rich and thus various plant foods are readily available. Is there any question that Russia needs the resources of Ukraine, if it is ever to regain the status of the former Soviet Union?

Under the existing regime of President Vladimir Putin, who is in fact the dictator of his one-party system, his only goal is restoration of the former Soviet Union. As most unidirectional dictators, he will not let anyone stand in his way, including the United States and its associate, NATO. Unless Ukraine receives the maximum support in military supplies as well as sanctions against Putin by all world powers, the United States and Europe should begin preparations, because, as you suggest, we are staring into World War III.

I agree in principle but would prefer to believe that most of them are victims of a carefully designed mind control campaign contrived by Putin with the help of the former president to divide and weaken our nation.

The former president continues to be a conduit for spreading a dangerous cancer of misinformation, divisive rhetoric, and destructive thinking into the minds of too many otherwise decent Americans.

We saw this coming when the previous administration showed complete lack of common sense and any form of diplomacy (and intelligence) by kissing putin's ring. Now we see "he who shall not be named" once again kissing putin's ring as Europe prepares for war. The GOP should be ashamed of themselves for supporting putin - who relishes in destroying our democracy. But then the GOP was always on the side of the war and supporting the military industrial complex. The MIC must be chomping at the bit!

Thanks so much for the dose of reality I fear many need right now.

Steve K commented that, "I fear here in the USA we may see the brown shirts again, or somethings along those lines."

I think it's fair to focus on people with red hats and angry faces that want to "Make America" something or other; that'll do until the shirts get delivered.

Thanks again for another thoughtful and helpful perspective on what is about to happen. I sure wish we could reengage with ourselves to reduce the gulf between our factions. We are dividing ourselves and letting other conquer because of it.

Mary warned of the dangers of Russia in 1917, and few listened. Again, she has warned of these dangers. She promised that in the end her Immaculate heart would triumph. But we all have to play a part. —- quit the sinning, and start praying. Pretty simple. Otherwise these calamities will continue to vex us

Dictators and wanta be dictators like Putin value only increasing and retaining their power. They utilize they same historic tools, using lies and misinformation to appeal to and control and divide the public; fear, scapegoating, appeals to nationalism, racism, religious bigotry. Depending how intelligent the wanta be dictator happens to be in the use of these tactics usually determines determines how well they succeed in their anti-democratic quest for power. Putin is both a shroud and cruel wanta-be dictator. He has recently managed to make himself lifetime president in Russia. like Hitler, he simply gets rid of anyone who publicly critisizes him. He either arranges their murder, disappearance, or trumped up charges to throw them them in prison. He is a threat, like Hitler was, to Europe. The more this dangerous political bully is appeased and not stopped the more agression he will perpetrate.

This is reminiscent of WW11 . Hitler kept taking a bit of this and that.No one wanted another WW1 then Chamberlin came home with his piece of paper saying Peace In Our Time! Well we know what happened after that.Sovereign countries are just that. If you let the bullies keep biting eventually you'll surrender. You have to stand up to them.So many young people are unaware of what real war is. When I grew up in Australia we still had barbed wire along the beach to prevent the Japanese from invading. I never forget that image.

It is hard not to succumb to despair reading the news - in particular the attention paid to what trump is saying. I have no words of wisdom just want to thank you for your thoughtful comments. They help. They really do.

You are always eloquent Mr. Rather. As the daughter of a soldier and the mother of a soldier I am not feeling eloquent, only sad for all the mothers of the soldiers who will be injured or die due to another senseless conflict.
