My mom was a crooked tree. She bent to no one and stood alone throughout her life. I wanted to be a straight tree. I gladly offered myself up to the saw mill inside a military entrance processing facility, but my crooked back sent back the way I came. I found strength throughout my life in other crookedness that she gave me.

Side Saddle is another album on Molly’s album. That song perfectly describes my mom and her quarterback horses. From an early age mom had to prove herself to the tail bosses and always left all of those good ole’ boys chewin’ on gravel.

Catching up on my my substack

Reading. So glad I did! Crooked tree indeed. Most of my friends are too! A large grove indeed.

I am so sorry people have to go through alopecia. US Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts suffers from this condition. After she was elected in 2019 her hair started to fall out after she was elected to her first term in The US House of Representatives. Now, when you look at her, her head is completely bald and she does not seem to be ashamed of it.

I love the accolades that Molly Tuttle is receiving for her wonderful, moving songs, and likewise the wonderful music of Rihanna Giddens. Similarly, the Grammy Song of the Year award Bonnie Raitt received last Sunday for “Just Like That” truly warms my heart. I was also amused (and a little angry) that the Daily Mail referred to Raitt as an “unknown blues singer.” Wow.

This is a beautiful story! Thanks for the link for Molly Tuttle’s Crooked Tree.

I recently saw a statement on Twitter from @ObolTami and it is “difference should be celebrated.”

My husband and I enjoy some Korean tv series. We just finished watching “Alchemy of Souls,” and “Hotel del Luna.” Both had themes that involved trees.

I was walking in the forest one day and came upon a tree that was quirkier than the rest. I wish I was able to post the photo I took. Anyway, here’s my tribute to that…

Quirky Trees

Trees are quirky and we love it!

Arms bending every which way towards the heavens or down towards earth. Legs digging deep into the soil, sometimes taking root under thousand year old stone. Even when they crash and burn they still grace the forest with their antiquated beauty. Each with it’s own quirky style expressing “ hey I belong here just as much as you!”

Unlike the world of human behavior, there’s no snickering or chastising going on behind their limbs. They are accepted for who they are in all their quirky splendor. They are accepted as part of the whole and each has a role to play in the grand forest scheme.

We are all trees in the forest, never dead or ugly, even when we sometimes crash and burn. We would be best served to emulate the life of trees, embracing each other’s quirks and differences, toward a more unified world, where the only shade we throw is around each other’s often burned out hearts.

Hi all - I have been a follower of Steady since day one and finally became a paid member recently when my budget allowed. I truly love reading every single article, especially the exposure to artists and stories I was unaware of - such as Molly Tuttle. Wow, what a beautiful song and message. I am so thankful for Dan Rather, Elliot Kirschner, and the whole Steady community, even though I am a quiet member from afar. I would much rather be a steady, crooked tree than anything else!

Thank you to Steady and Ms. Tuttle.

I needed this today.

"People say I'm different

My way of life seems strange

I took the road less traveled

Twists and turns along the way

But like the crooked tree

I'm growing stronger day by day

As the clouds roll by

A river never wonders

Why it flows around the bend

A mountain doesn't question

How it rose up from the land

So who am I to wish

I wasn't just the way I am

Who am I?"
