Thank you, Dan and Elliot, for starting this forum. I may not contribute often, but it is so so wonderful to find others who love our country and fear for it's future as I do. It is liberating to have a place to share these thoughts without criticism and attack. I ended friendships on and following January 6th with friends who just couldn't see the truth. I have other friendships that only remain because we staunchly "avoid speaking of politics". I am always buoyed by your optimism and your faith that we as a nation, as a democracy will survive. You help me find hope when I feel hopeless. Thank you!

I am so thankful for both you, Mr. Dan Rather, and Mr. Kirschner for bringing a sense of steady for me. It is so easy to feel down. I appreciate the calmness, goodness, reality, and moral code you provide. This gives me so much hope.

I didn’t hesitate for a moment to renew my subscription. I have always been a huge fan of yours. My vocabulary is not nearly as eloquent as yours, which is one of the many reasons I enjoy reading Steady. I hope you continue to have good health.

I love you, Dan Rather! My mom loves you too. My earliest memories of you were at age 3, covering Vietnam. You had a seat at our dinner table every night, all through my childhood, teenager years, into my 20s, 30s, and 40s. Now in my 50s, you have a seat next to me when I am on my laptop or phone. Your wisdom, compassion, and humour have been a part of my life, for almost my entire life.(Your coverage of the 2000 Bush/Gore election is so memorable. I giggled so much at your commentary. How I wish I had taped that!)

Thank you so much for all the years you've been with me. Thank you for your dedication to the things that matter.

By the way...my mom also had rheumatic fever as a very young child. Her older brother had polio, and they both came through it just fine. Steady...just like you and your dad.❤

Dear Mr. Rather, I feel some hope and confidence, that I would not have at all, because of STEADY. I have never been more discouraged, nor felt defeated by an insane political party in the United States. I am committed to doing whatever it takes to restore the strength of our democracy. I look to you and Mr. Kirschner for guidance. What can we do, besides vote? Are people or organizations that we can support financially or through volunteer work? Who needs to hear from us. Put us to work!

Dan it has been a difficult year but made all more easier with your regular editions of Steady.

You ask what we like and what we would like to see more of. I like the weekend change of pace with the Smile. Your regular posts are always thought provoking and enjoyable.

What I would like to see more of is driven by my degree in history and my continuing interest in the field. So much of what is happening now has seen similar occurrences in the past. Being able to bring to the attention of your readership these parallels might heighten awareness of the current circumstances. You yourself have lived through some of these and can share your memories and reflections.

I look forward to another year and seeing how Steady grows.

When I was a junior in high school in 1977, I had the opportunity to take a history class called Minorities. My school was barely integrated, so I am curious, now, why it was even offered. It covered the Holocaust, Slavery and the robbing of the Indigenous Americans homeland. It was probably the most impactful class I took in my whole high school career. And now has an older American I realize how lucky I was to have that base for my life as a human. This class needs to be offered in all high schools...let the kids come to it as I did. A choice they can make to truly impact them for their whole lives. I was the right age to take that class...just really understanding that I...me! could think differently than almost everyone I knew then. I am thankful for this almost every day!

"I don’t know what the next year holds in store, for me, for you, or for our country and our planet. I hope it is one of greater justice, peace, and health."

Such wonderful words.

Dan, your wise and steady voice means a lot to me. Keep doing what you're doing.

I have been a fan of yours since the early 60's when I was a kid living in Fort Worth. I have family there and in Austin. But my Texas connections are just a small component of why I like you.

The biggest reason is probably our shared love of America and democracy. Those two ideas have always been indivisible to me and I hope and pray that never changes.

Thank you for giving me hope.
