We are not saying goodbye to Covid. Covid is here to stay. We are saying goodbye to the protections that came with a pandemic health emergency. That is such a critical distinction for the millions like me who have now been shut out from participating in society.

Neither my spouse nor I can go out to eat, see a show, go to a movie or even travel anymore without putting me at risk. Hell, I can't even safely go to my medical appointments anymore without the risk of contracting Covid.

Life with a chronic illness is isolating enough. But seeing the world move on with complete disregard for those of us who need others to mask for us is...delibiltating awful.

So please, do not use the language of saying goodbye to a debilitating and still deadly disease because that just reinforces the mistaken assumption that it is safe for all of us.

Yeah, no. It's not over and they're dancing past the graveyard saying it is.

This past Monday, the LA county Health Department COVID newsletter had the following:

"The first cases of the newest Omicron strain have been confirmed in Los Angeles County and residents are being asked to watch out for possible new symptoms and take precautions. Reports of conjunctivitis, more commonly known as “pink eye,” are being attributed to XBB.1.16, also known as “Arcturus.” People infected with XBB.1.16 may also experience more traditional COVID symptoms, such as fever, cough and shortness of breath.

"The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) predicts XBB.1.16 accounts for 8% of COVID-19 cases in California and 10% nationally right now."

I was particularly interested in that, since it led me to wonder if the "bad cold" I seemed to have contracted over the weekend was indeed a bad cold. Turns out, when I took a COVID self-test, that it wasn't. It was COVID-19, the new version, and it will kick your ass with steel-toed boots. Only the fact that I have both original boosters and the bivalent six months ago has resulted in it only putting me on my ass until yesterday. I am still positive, but now well on the mend.

Get the bivalent booster! And wear the damn mask inside in public. Let the idiots be idiots. You definitely don't want this new version.
