I remember this album with two emotions: elation at the beauty of the music and the fact that so many of my favorite musicians were collaborating, and utter sadness at the loss of one of the purest vocalists (Orbison) ever born. Thank you for this Mr Rather. A truly great song and definitely a reason to smile.

Greatness singing together. Harmony to perfection. I'm lucky to have lived when all of the legends were physically with us. Thank you for the musical magic. It'll take me the rest of the way.

I was lucky that way too. Saw all these musicians live with their respective bands, including Harrison!

You mean the Beatles?

Yes indeed! Memphis TN.

I saw them in Chicago. Had a great Day who decided his 3 oldest children 12, 11, 9, should see their favorite group in person. What a great Dad, no idea how he got the money as we were not well off.

It was 1966 and I was 13. My mother was the one who bought tickets for me and three friends. I didn’t even know they were coming to town! But I clearly remember the tickets were $2.50 each with a 50 cent handling fee. Compare that to the latest Taylor Swift tickets!

Ya. Oh how I remember. A nice interlude between my youth-er days and old-er ones. I missed my musical door opening but today I play for free, lol.

Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful. Dylan and Harrison (two I was once in love with) et al. And my do they look happy. The rocking chair with guitar was a classy touch. Classy men, classy music. “It.’s all right “. Let’s hope we’re saying that same thing after Tuesday.

Janis, it will be all right after Tuesday. We're in this together to the end of the line! I was in love with Petty! Onward and blue!

Any chance Dan, that you will hold a conversation on substack tomorrow. Maybe a limited number of people, only so you have better control.

Thanks, Dan. We “old and gray” who still have something to say draw strength from your example, too.

I'm old, 80 and counting, white-haired rather than gray, but still have lots to say.

The music they made was so special. Thanks for reminding us all of a reason to smile.

Well, I'm old and gray and I've got something to say. I will go to the end of the line fighting for Democracy and the country I love. I will live and let live and I will do my absolute best to forgive MAGA for trying to destroy it all. What a great toe-tapping, lively little ditty! The rocker with the guitar was a beautiful tribute to Roy Orbison who truly was a great musician just like the rest of the Traveling Wilburys! Thank you, Mr. Rather, for giving me a reason to smile.

Expand full comment

You are one step ahead of me...I can't get to the point of forgiving MAGA for whatever happens. But if they win I do know that, as another favorite song of mine says, "They can't take that away from me" and they cannot take away the goodness that is the millions of American who will vote against their hatred. We may not win because of the electoral college but there are indeed more of us than them (sadly just not where I live!).

Expand full comment

I truly understand, Pat! Notice I said I would do my absolute best to forgive. It is a very hard thing to do. You are so right that there are millions of Americans that have that "goodness" for each other and their fellow man. We will continue to fight that hatred. Love is a very strong tie that binds. Some people that are part of that cult will eventually get tired of having only that anger and hatred to sustain them and I hope, when they reach out, we will use the "good" in us to accept and help. It's a tall order for sure, but it could eventually lead to a less divisive country! Onward and blue!

Peggy I needed to see your comment today. I just found out my sweet, funny 46 year old single son just voted for t. I was and still am horrified. He was not raised that way but is heavily influenced by a multi millionaire childhood friend who lives in Puerto Rico to escape taxes. This friend’s father is a self made millionaire who gave his son seed money. Yet, our son is his own person. There is no one to blame. I have no choice but to forgive; this will not tear our small family apart.

Maureen, I so understand! I have one daughter who just has that different mindset, but I figure two out of my three kids offset that one, so...we go on loving. Fingers, toes and even eyes crossed at this point!

Maureen, you shouldn't have to let this tear your family apart! My son also supports the orange man. We have made it a rule in our family that we simply will not discuss politics. It is pointless and would lead to words spoken that cannot be unsaid. I love my family so very much more than politics. They will always come first with me. I know that you love your son. It shows in your words. You are right. It is his choice to make but as moms, it is very hard to take! I can forgive because I know in my heart I will continue to fight for our country and our Democracy. Always remember, you have people on this substack who support you and wish you the best. Onward and blue!

Peggy I just saw this reply. Thank you so much for your encouragement. I am totally with you on this; it will not tear us apart. I respect his right to vote and am glad he voted at all. He doesn’t always exercise his civil rights. He is so much like his mother in that he struggles with mind stories of what “could happen”. We are all complex humanoids and our contradictions sometime out weighs our reasoning.

In my experience it takes a conscious and continued effort to forgive a big hurt. I found that saying the prayer the Our Father very slowly eased that process for me. I would stop and meditate at '.. forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us".

I hope that helps you.

Pamela, that prayer just soothes my soul! You are right, it takes a lot of effort to forgive a big hurt, but with forgiveness comes peace. You are a light and a help! Onward and blue!

We had a cassette tape of this, and it was our standard travel music. We have 4 children and each of them would sing along. Of course, the tape eventually broke, and every one in the family was saddened. About 10 years ago, both albums were re-released and every one received tthere own cd. Today, we still smile every time it's played. Thank you

Let’s hope it will be “All Right”. And not the “End Of The Line” for Democracy in America. Thank you. This song is somehow reassuring 48 hours before this Presidential Election. I will be playing it on my way from Church this morning to vote at the Robert F Kennedy Middle school here in Manhatten . What would RFK think of his namesake putting democracy at risk by supporting the Republican ticket? I think he might call that “the end of the line “. Staying Steady is really hard today.

Nothing, not even Trumpism, is the end of the line for our Democracy, as long as any of us live to fight for it.
