I work as a volunteer at the Cancer Society here in ChCh N.Z. I was delighted to show Elaine's calm and good humor to my friends there and to visitors. It certainly put a smile on everyone's face today!

What grace, poise, and kindness under pressure! Many other performers of all kinds would have thrown tantrums or refused to continue. Instead... well, we all can see exactly what character this lovely and talented woman has. Brava!!!

Oh my, what a delicious conjunction. In her essay today Heather Cox Richardson reminded us that in the late 1960's President Johnson led the fight to launch the Great Society . Among its many achievements was the creation (in 1967) of the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment of the Humanities. And now comes this remarkable homage to "The Show Must Go On." As just an ordinary guy who spent forty years loving and teaching theatre in a small liberal arts college, I could regale you with many stories of what can and did go wrong in some of the over 100 plays I have directed.

On the NEA and NEH all I can say is the privilege of receiving two of their summer grants in the ensuing years gave me opportunities to learn that I might never have had. On the the "Show Must Go On" front, I have managed to step in to play a part shortly after a stage manager called to say that a young actor had not turned up and to watch with horror when a prop butter churn filled with fake milk started to leak turning the stage floor into a bunch of slippery white puddles. And like every director I've got a million more. I wait for another marvelous Saturday. Bring it On!
