So hope this case goes to trial next week and that the jury convicts Trump, which he definitely deserves. It’s time the truth that Maga and Fox keep covering up comes out.

See below. It will. Appeals court just denied the delay. Whoohooo

Thank you, Dan. I sincerely hope that this sinks The Former Guy--something has to! And it's great to learn the behind-the-scenes story. I do so appreciate your insight and willingness to speak out--keep it up!

I agree “sink the former guy” - trump!

Thanks, Dan. I don’t think I had read the part about a love child before. It wouldn’t surprise me at all, tho. And this is who the evangelical preachers are pushing their parishioners to vote for and elevate to the WH again!

This is where the separation of church and state is paramount!

Prayers for our country and democracy🙏🏼⚖️🙏🏼

That is the reason I stopped going to a Southern Baptist church because they are just eat up with adoration for that creep! They are practicing idolatry in its worst form just because they think he supports the sanctity of life. He doesn’t care about the unborn he only cares about himself. I’m just SO sick of him and his lies. I’m a Christian but I will never call myself an evangelical Christian. I want no part of that label due to tfg!

Hurrah to you. I have church relationship BUT not evangelical.

It's not just evangelicals, the right wing of the American Catholic church has been covertly active in supporting donald the divider through leonard leo and his elitist ilk.. Thus the American Catholic right wing has also been subverting the Pope, who tries to promote a more accepting and inclusive church within a very rigid organization with many 2 faced coutiers in the hierarchy.

Yes he is, and he has 4 others on the bench carrying the same card although one of them switched to Episcopalian later in life.

The fact that as long as Clarence Thomas remains in SCOTUS, it will have absolutely no credibility. It shows the man has no shame. Anita Hill was right, and Joe Biden is largely responsible for Thomas being there in the first place because of the shameful way he cut of testimony from others who could have corroberated her testimony. And here's Trump complaining about the daughter of the judge in the upcoming trial being a Democrat. Thomas epitomizes the fact that judges should never have lifetime appointments.

It would be appropriate for churches who involve themselves in pushing parishioners to lose their tax exempt status.

Expand full comment

Agreed wholeheartedly

Expand full comment

I just read that it was a rule - that anyone requesting tax exempt status cannot do anything political. I don't know if that's the case, but wow if it is!

Expand full comment

Poppiwinkle, there are different kinds of non-exempt status.

501c3 is the most common designation for a "charitable cause" and these non-profits are forbidden from political activity of any kind. As far as I know, a 501c3 is the ONLY non-profit designation where donations are tax-deductible.

501c4 is the most common designation for an non-profit organization that engages in politics to help fulfill its mission. Donations are not tax-deductible.

501c6 is the designation for special interest groups, like a chamber of commerce, realtors association, etc. Donations are not tax-deductible.

501c9 is the designation for foundations that manage funds left in trusts for charitable causes. Donations are not tax-deductible.

About 20 years ago, the Republican Party went to work trying to change IRS non-profit rules so that political pacs could get a 501c3 designation. If they'd succeeded political contributions would be tax deductible. However, they also wanted the IRS to allow these pacs to keep donors a secret (the Republican Party insisted this was to protect donor privacy). BUT, that rule change would have required the IRS to keep donor's tax filings secret as well. It also would have opened the door to people "claiming" huge tax write-offs, without proof. As far as I know, they lost that battle.

It's never about morality with the evangelicals. It's about the power to take away the rights of women and minorities to "make America great again."

Trump has always been extremely aware of his public image. Neurotically so. He once used the name "John Barron" to spread rumors and contact the press to buff his image.

And he's not just concerned with *his* public image. He seems image as a weapon. Remember all of the name-calling and conspiracy theory sowing he employed in the 2016 election.

Remember the steps he took to arrange for Joe Biden to be under "investigation" for the 2020 election. Steps that resulted in him being *impeached* for trying to blackmail the president of Ukraine.

He is now desperately trying to avoid the shame of sitting in court, having former associates dish dirt on him. His True Believers may not care that he was cheating on his wife and that he paid her off to keep silent. But there are many independents and wavering Republicans for whom one more scandal may be enough to convince them to not bother voting for a president this November. Or stay home . . . or even vote for Biden.

But . . . while I relish the idea of that repugnant, vain, power-hungry shmuck squirming under the spotlight, WE HAVE OUR OWN JOB TO DO.

We need to get folks registered, help out campaigns, and get out the vote in November.

Mr Jones: Community College students in every competitive State for the Senate (except TX and Mt) need to be informed that they can register to vote ONLINE in less than 10 minutes! Many of us can spend two hours a week at the central plaza to these colleges with a handmade sign saying “You can register to vote ONLINE in less than 10 minutes on your Cell—Here’s the link!” Folks who have done it register 50 new young voters in less than 2 hours! There are 345 Community Colleges in these competitive states so who is willing to do it and bring a friend or two with you?

I love this idea!! I have encountered young people who truly don’t understand that they have the power to vote, the right to pick who represents them in local, state and federal positions. When I ask them if they are registered to vote, they’ll say “No, I’m not into politics” or “I don’t know how to vote.” When I get this response, it will be great to have something to give them that makes registering so accessible.

Appears, at least today, that DJT will not be able to avoid answering these charges stating a week from today. I seriously doubt any of the hard/line MAGA folks will bat an eye as his shenanigans surrounding this case. However, if and when he’s found guilty of one or more felonies, the impact could be quite substantial. In most states, felons cannot vote, or run for public office. A disfranchised presidential candidate representing the GOP is, without a doubt, the most ridiculous situation in American political history. What’s the line that accompanies such atrocious happenings … oh yes … “have you no shame?”

thanks Dan, I just wish you had more exposure for your critiques. You are still a name brand that can get media attention beyond this blog. Is it too much to ask of you to go on CNN and MSNBC and even Fox to say what you said here? You are a well respected voice and influencer and so much is at stake if Trump gets away with hijacking another election. He has delayed his accountability for years on this case alone and it cannot stand more delays. Cohen went to prison on less evidence. If Trump gets away with this he will have broken our Justice system on his way to breaking our Democracy. Other name brands along with you must get in the fight, please.

Another great article, Mr. Rather. And I was about to comment much like Alan has here. I too wonder if there's something you, along with other well-respected journalists, could do to help restore faith in our country's news media. I really appreciate all you are doing to try to inform the masses. I worry though that the information you are sharing isn't reaching the people who really need to see it. I would urge you to speak out to an audience beyond this blog. I think your reputation remains strong in this country, regardless of party lines and your voice could have a very positive influence on the electorate.

"For someone who constantly professes his innocence, wouldn’t a quick trial clear his name? "

This isn't even a possibility. The evidence is in and only a corrupted jury would clear Trump's name. It's time for a quick trial that will determine his guilt or innocence, the latter being most unlikely. We can then move on to the other trials.

It's good to have the whole story, and Dan and his team have done it well. What would be better still would be for the judges to start calling the delays specious and without grounds. If the facts are present, and they are, it's time to get moving.

This will be the litmus test for the subsequent legal battles Trump is finally facing. We should find out quickly if the wheels of justice will be allowed to turn as they would with any other US citizen facing criminal prosecution, or, if his money and legal team will be successful in pandering to MAGA funded media, jurists and justices at the highest levels. It's truly a watershed moment for the American judicial system and ultimately our imperiled, fragile constitution. It's a HUGE moment in world history.

You are correct. The America of today seems to care more for money and the power it wields than for truth or justice. Knowing what kind of man DJT is not a secret. Yet, in one night, he can raise $50M at a party. What does that say about his donors? Who or what is their God?

He should be deathly afraid of this case. Not only is it salacious and damaging but I believe it will uncover a lot more than we already know. None of that will be flattering to Trump. And what could possibly prick the balloon of his Evangelical base more than a sex scandal(s). And there could be some other youngish illegitimate Trumps running around, or women that he forced to have abortions. There goes Mister Life. As a Manhattanite I secretly kept hoping I would be called for jury duty. Didn’t happen. And he knows how much he is despised in NYC. He should be rankled. He will not get a friendly jury on this Island.

And if all this can’t turn people against him, what about those remarks at his fund raiser over the weekend ..,,,that the Resolute Desk “has been soiled”, and that this could be “the last election this country ever has”. This man is despicable.

All I know is that it seemed odd that he won the election though he lost the popular vote. Also, since I wasn’t scouting the internet before 2016 I didn’t know about the pizza sex scandal that was being spread on the web regarding Hilary. I knew about the emails but I thought it was mentioned too frequently considering it was being investigated and eventually no evidence of wrongdoing was found. I also thought it was odd that no one cared about his affair with a porn star or his grab them by the pussy remark. Despite all this, many Christians have been yaya for him in huge numbers. On top of all this, the Russians were interfering in our election and Trump has been eternally grateful ever since. There were two impeachments, an insurrection, and all these criminal charges and he manages to delay everything while having his supporters pay for his fees, legal and otherwise. He threatens judges, jurors and their family, and is free to speak out and run for president. Is this what happens when the mob and Putin looks after you?
