The expression "can-can" originated from the French word "canard," meaning "duck." The sight of a dancer flipping up her many petticoats while facing away from the audience reminded people of the south end of a duck facing north and bending over to bag its lunch from the pond.

I will never forget watching my daughter perform, for the first time, an individual dance in a dance competition, which she choreographed herself. It was right after I had been diagnosed with a life threatening disease, which made this performance possibly the only one I would.see of her. It brought tears of joy to my eyes at a very bleak time in our lives. I still remember ever move 30 years later. She won first place by the way.

And we cannot forget the extraordinary paintings of the Moulin Rouge by Toulouse Lautrec, an artist who did much as any musician to make the can-can the world famous performance that it became.

Thank you for reminding us of all of it.

These were rousing and exceptionally well done. It was great that you found them and were able to share them with us. Music can-can aways assist us in whatever mood we are in and what we are doing. It can even help to make memories or stir them. Thank you!

Another lovely column to warm the heart in these bleak times. Of course, the can-can would be outlawed in how many states these days?

Great show. The kids in the orchestra look like high schoolers but they're really, really good. Very professional.

Thank you for these wonderful performances. Both of my daughters were trained in multiple dance disciplines and both dance professionally in their younger years. My younger daughter danced the can-can and this brought back so many wonderful memories. Dance was such a part of all our lives (carpool, costumes, etc.) for so many years. It was lovely to revisit those memories.
