To Dan and Elliot and the Steady Team - in response to your question on how we feel about your communications to us: As you say, you give us a sense of history, since you've lived it. How can we ever get better if we don't learn from history? So, that is invaluable! You also give us hope, as you've seen hope bring this country through other bad times. I don't think I get that from anyone else. I never thought the word "steady" would mean so much to me, but it does now! And it helps me and my friends continue working to keep a democracy. Thank you!

I simply want to say "THANK YOU!" Journalism by real journalists, that have real and credible sources.

You are right. You have seen a lot in your career and lifetime. I hope that you can find that young, new, fresh voice. A recent college graduate. Their take on what has, and is happening, through their eyes and experience would be an interesting perspective.

Not to worry, Mr. Rather. I'm not wanting to see you replaced. :-)

Perhaps once a week, or every two weeks, a new voice might be heard. That would be a great launching pad for the next, "Dan Rather."

Enjoy the Summer

To me you are the Last of the Greats, as I grew up with my parents watching Cronkite, Huntley & Brinkley and John Chancellor, then later you and Brokaw. Steady is the perfect name for this effort and we all welcome the reasoned blend of insight and eloquence penned with the verbal decorum of bygone days in journalism. Hopefully young people will gravitate here as well…Bravo

I love that there’s a place where I can find honest journalism that seeks the truth. I’ve been a long-time reader and was thrilled to see you’ve put so much effort into a forum where we can continue to have an open dialogue without fear of people going off-topic and on the attack. Just yesterday, I was attacked on social media because I gave my opinion about the meaning of a new song, “Am I The Only One.” Artistry, whether it comes in the form of music, art, or other creative genres, oftentimes is left up to the viewer for self interpretation. I looked at this song as the Hope that we’re all Patriots, Americans, who want the best for our country. Yet, I was attacked for expressing the feeling of Hope I have for this country and that we could all learn to work together and respect our differences. I was hit from all sides and the conversation that I thought would spark Hope turned to negativity and hatred. So, Dan, turning to your newsletter was a ray of sunshine and I knew it was a safe place to express my opinions. And after further thought, I have sworn off expressing my opinions on social media platforms and will stick to this forum, where I know I will not only feel safe, but I will be heard.

Dan, lo e your clear foresight and eloquence.

I fell that baby boomers lived in "Golden Age", after WWII because their parents where exceptional mature and hard working. Additionally new technology and unusual help to attend colleges.

The further remove in time, I believe we don't understand the great blessings and freedoms that living a FAIR and uncorupt country provides. Sometimes, I believe people are selling out soul and country for "trinkets" of no value. Could address that? And how upcoming generations need our support and help?

Thanks,

Heidi

Dan, I have read your book and follow you on Steady. I am totally with you and I was delighted when you reappeared on the political scene. This is a horrifying time for America, we are fortunate to have you back.

I am very new to this digital age. I am actually proud of myself for attempting this! I have such strong feelings of our Republic. Past generations have fought so hard. The frustration I feel of what is happening with this divide is beyond words. I am so worried for the future of my children and grandchildren. I find some calm in being part of this group and listening to your experience. Thank you again.

I enjoy the clarity you bring to the discussion of current events. I appreciate your honesty and integrity as often times it is lacking in different news media. Thank you. I look forward to reading more of your thoughts on daily issues on Steady.

Thank you for providing this space. Every other media headline is filled with anger, fear and a threat of more chaos. I read your posts and the multitude of "Steady" responders in the evening as part of my routine, to close out the day. I rest a little better knowing there are still people in America that are still on the side of good vs. evil, doing the right thing (not always the easy thing) and they too are going to wake up in the morning with their eyes set on a better tomorrow.

Dan, I am one of those that hasn't had the chance to open many of my Steady's. I do keep them for when i do have a moment. I never seam to be able to read more than a paragraph before someone needs something. When i do have time it is usually while i am busy with my hands. I haven't read a proper book in over a year. I also have issues with my eyes that keeps me away from the computer screen as it causes my vision to become blurry and can last hours.

I have learned to appreciate audible books however, i can listen while i work and it calms me when the job is stressful or boring.

I have always loved your voice, it soothed me and my family through my childhood and beyond. Now at 52 it is sorely missed.

I wonder if you would ever consider reading aloud your articles so that those of us who listen could hear them. So that those of us with sight problems could enjoy your wisdom, insights and calming tone.

Thank you for your dedication to your craft and to your readers.

Like many of your readers I have enjoyed your reporting since the 1960s. When I subscribed, I had a good idea that I would get a well-informed, balanced (sometimes passionate), analysis of the news. Lately, when I read the comments I encounter a reader who comes at one of your stories (like the attack on the capitol) from a very different perspective. The back and forth replies that I read focused on ideas and interpretation of the facts. There was no name-calling or personal attacks, which I thought was a testament to the standard you hold for this newsletter. It does make me wonder how many readers do NOT consider themselves part of your "choir?" How often in the last six months have readers pushed back on your narrative with thoughtful comments (or aggressive comments)? Does Steady filter them before they go live?
