Bummed Out Baby Boomer

Seeing the glass as half full seems to get more difficult every day. I struggle to understand why.

I am retired, healthy and have a comfortable life. But everywhere I look and most of what I read, shows a world gone mad and a dismal future.

War in the Ukraine

Pandemics

Shootings in America

Corruption in Governments

The list goes on.

As a “baby boomer”, my modus operandi has been to educate myself, learn to think for myself, be clear on my own values, get involved in positive change by voting and supporting efforts to change injustice. I was a firm believer in the Martin Luther King’s view - “the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice. Change takes a long time, but it does happen.”

As a septuagenerian, I am not confident that Mr King was right or maybe he was then but the world has moved on. It seems the world has morphed into one where lies and corruption are pervasive; where people want to tear down rather than improve or build.

“Grift” is both a new word and concept to me. It seems to be contagiously spreading like Covid. The widespread existence and acceptance of it shocks me to the core. When did it become OK or even laudable to lie, cheat and get one’s own way at the expense of others. When did it become respectable to be disrespectful to others? When did it become acceptable to twist truth into lies and to spread them as gospel?

Technology has enabled people to become “two faced” presenting a false face to the world. Maybe the “truth will out” but it has to fight its way through huge quantities of lies. And as Carl Jung proposed, the truth when it is held back becomes the shadow. Have we come to a time when the shadow, that unknown side of personality that is instinctive and irrational is in control?

Wish I knew.

As many of you, I also read both. I recently listen on CD Dan Rather’s book, “Rather Outspoken”. What an insight not only to your journey but the integrity with which you move through this world, it is enlighten. Thank you.

I also have been watching several of “Beau of the Fifth” on YouTube. He is a calm healthy dose of insight.

So nice to see how many people read you and HCRichardsin daily. So nice to find others who are doing the same as me. Thanks for the boost in hope. To your comment about community, I So appreciate the chance to read differences of opinion without nastiness, unkindness, and with respect and courtesy. Thanks so much for beginning and sustaining this great work. And yes it is a "great work". So glad it has made you feel better, too. Keep the faith.

When I was a youngster growing up in the 70's, I believed what newscasters like you told me the truth through the words you spoke on the radio or TV set every night. I believed it like I believed my teachers, and my preacher, and my parents (well, maybe not my parents considering my young age).

But today, I am older and wiser, and I observe and understand the world around me with a more critical eye/ear. You have always been a steady "voice" in my life and I want to thank you for that. Your words stir me, sadden me, and inspire me. And with words from you and this community, I am finding my way through the hazy madness to a tiny light, a spark of hope for peace. Bless you and your family and the Steady community.

I would say that because only paid subscribers can comment on steady.substack, I think it has kept out a lot of the people that troll around on Facebook and other social media outlets that do not charge for access. Anyway thanks for providing a place where positive dialog can take place.
