Unfortunately we have powerful rich folks in these red states such as Texas that want to suppress the memory of the mistreatment of African Americans in this country. These powerful rich folks in these red states effectively control these red state governments.
TX AG Ken Paxton has been impeached and is due to his Senate trial, lead by Daniel Patrick, who has received $3million from Paxton's PAC Do you think this will be a fair trial? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=11y2a_FTiyQ
It is alarming that the anti-education political trend is reaching institutions of higher education. You wrote that getting as close to the truth as possible is the goal of journalism. Do the university decision makers value truth?
Shocking, yet, not. You write so intelligently and fervently about it. It must also be an embarrassment to you, and ultimate journalist, to have it in your neighborhood.
I sincerely, though regretfully, hope that this means young journalist hopefuls will go elsewhere, and let that program at Texas A&M completely fail, it only seems to serve them right.
I could feel the sadness you had in writing to report on what is happening in a University you love, and it feels like it could be the 1930’s we are limping thru again…
I want to have hope for the future so please keep speaking out!
Egregious was certainly the right word to use regarding A&M and UT. Thank you so much for addressing the bigotry, which is so blatant in different parts of the country.
My daughter and I were having this same conversation just this morning. That racism is still so systemic.
Bringing it out in the open like you have done is the most powerful vehicle.
Maybe I’m an optimist, but I think eventually we will have to accept peoples of all countries. It is not just about color, but it’s about gender as well. It may not happen in our lifetime.
But it will happen.
And we had better be kind now, for the sake of our grandchildren and their grandchildren.
I keep remembering that song from the past, and I never understood its in depth meaning.
“Be kind to your web-footed friend, for a duck may be somebody’s brother!” 🎵🎵🎵
This national trend of hatred and fear is so disturbing it’s taken me a few days to respond. Thank you for keeping us updated on so many current events happening around the country. I’m wary but optimistic. All the misinformation and the willingness to accept it is beyond my comprehension. Keep up the good imvestigative work.
In 1984 I attended the D-Day anniversary in Normandy. On June 7th I was at Point Du Hoc with the Rangers for their memorial ceremony. General Rudder had passed, but his widow was there. I wonder what the General would have to say about the cowards and fools that are now running his beloved Texas A & M? And of the example they say for the students. Tragic.
I decided years ago that I would never visit Texas again, based on their gun laws, and they've only piled on one horrible policy after another since then. Is Texas a lost cause? I know there are many more sensible people living there, but so far they seem to have been unable to turn back the wave of dark ages policies and laws instituted by the state leadership.
Indeed. I am a generational Texan living here and, I am sorry to say, embarrassed by the backward steps this state has made in just the past 3 years, most notably, the elimination of women's rights to determine their own healthcare. As for this Texas A&M debacle, the reasoning stated, "damage to our culture at A&M," says it all. Let's talk about that culture, shall we?
Dan....The Dr. McElroy story was in that “little paper up north” today. I’m sure you saw it. I hope other newspapers and broadcast journalism outlets pay attention to her story as well. Thank you 🙏🏻 for beginning the process and I hope the media notice continues. There are a lot of people rooting for her.....especially in that “little town up ⬆️ north” where you used to live and work!
I’m disgusted with my home state. I don’t recognize her anymore. Greg Abbott and his people have been intentionally ruining public education for years and now our universities will suffer the same fate.
Seems that White Supremacy is the most enduring principle bequeathed to our nation from inception. And "All men (double wink) are created equal" `is a pleasant facade.

What a great loss for the students and faculty. Shame on those made this decision.
Thanks

I get the sense that they would be more than thrilled to interview you for all of the institution to see how poorly they treated Dr. McElroy.

Your anger is apparent and rightfully so. You are not alone.

Resist synchronization. Resist the beginnings of fascism!
