Thank God there are still people brave enough to stand up and shout for what is right.

Well said, Mr. Rather and Mr. Kirschner.

I just happened upon your column and took a peek - I cannot afford to join. It is good to know that we are like-minded.

It’s all about money. Monied manipulators are the enemy Dan. (Not necessarily all rich people) Creating hate culture toward minorities (LGBT, gay, any race, immigrants) allows the GOP puppets to curry votes from the hater majority they create by promoting themselves as equally offended and ready to save us all from minorities. Owning the media is prerequisite and owning the legislature allows them to create laws that make them wealthier and LESS vulnerable to prosecution. Until we , as a society, recognize and address the threat of financial influence on government, the persecution of minorities for political/legislative gain isn’t going away.

Well said, and right on the mark. The bullying must be called-out and stopped if Democracy is to survive. In the past, great Americans have inspired us with bravery and words of wisdom, now the cowardly, who bow to Trumpism, are trying to dominate our public discourse with fear and words that distract our attention from reality. It's a virtual smoke and mirrors horror-show in politics but the real horror is playing-out in our cities and towns and rural communities where the hearts and minds of millions of our fellow citizens have been tragically kidnapped by the cult of Trumpism. It is the so-called Trump Base that has enabled the hostile takeover of so much of our government. We have clearly tried, and obviously cannot reach the Trump Base with reason and logic. They do not hear the truth and willfully deny reality. So, the only option is for patriotic Americans to unite as never before, against the cult of Trumpism and the bullying it inspires. We must speak out and stand up to the cult, even when it means condemnation by our friends, neighbors, even family. It is the most difficult decision Americans have ever faced. To stand firm against our fellow citizens, with absolute conviction in defense of the Truth. We must collectively and individually, regardless of retribution, speak in defense of truth and regardless of intimidation, soundly defeat the bullies at the polls. Otherwise, Democracy will be imperiled as never before.

In order to stop a bully, moral and ethical adult leaders need to step forward together, without discrimination, and speak common sense and strength to that bully’s face, without equivocation. Too many spineless “leaders” contradicting themselves and too many headless “media” chickens running amok, tripping all over each other. Unity will begin when these leaders, instead of standing behind a politician or a bully, stand forward together as one behind the knowledge that humanity, morality, knowledge and HONESTY will makes us strong. On Long Island, we once had the priest and the rabbi who inspired. The country needs about 5 strong, intelligent, honest and cooperative individuals, not just religious, to create an American “dream team” to help lead us out of this morass.

Dan, you want the people to fight those bullies. Certainly, but it is the media, the press especially, that does not come out with fighting words in stronger terms, labelling these traitors destroying democracy, in bold letters daily, in headlines, simply put, for overall, they are talking above the crowd. keep it simple, stupid. KISS. Call out the lies, scream about it. That's what the Democrats should be doing every minute, every day. Play the republican, tea party playbook or they will go down in defeat in the upcoming elections. If they don't fight on their terms, they will certainly lose their majorities and democracy will end up in the republican toilet. Democrats are fighting for their lives and those of this country our forefathers gave us as a guiding light the whole world revered and is being torn asunder from within.

Unfortunately we have a small group of voters in this country that like people like President#45 because he acts tough, speaks nasty, and appears to say what he means. These people like authoritarian personalities. We need to address why this small minority of voters think like this or we may very well get more authoritarian type people in both houses of The US Congress and The US Presidency. Then such a President of The United States may well appoint authoritarian type Supreme Court Justices who could be confirmed by Authoritarian type US Senators.

Thank you for this. It is good to hear other people see what I see happening and hope more people stand up to the bullies.

Thank for some honesty in this morass of misinformation! It is difficult to sit back & watch what is happening in this country now and not question one's own sanity. I can not tell you how important it is to hear the truth spoken! It should be repeated & shouted from rooftops so none of us forget there is still TRUTH in the world and as long as we keep our eyes on the TRUTH, we will never lose our democracy!

After 75 years for the first time I am fearful for the loss of our democracy. In my retirement i mostly write noir mystery adventures. Now I am writing about the tragedy in current American politics. The book is entitled "Is American Democracy Dying?" This is my preface.

After three-quarters of a century, I have come to view the evolution of politics in the United States across two centuries. It is not a pretty picture. Historians tend to paint the picture of Politics from the winner's view. That seldom includes the people of the United States. Incredibly, we are supposed to be a country of "We the People...". We have become a nation led by myopic power-hungry denizens who care little for the people and more about the power and the money of an office that is supposed to serve the people.

If you are still with me, I am offering up what I believe to be a more accurate picture of the political landscape in 2022.

Mark Twain wrote;

"Sometimes I wonder whether the world is being run by smart people who are putting us on or by imbeciles who really mean it."

I have concluded that the latter think they are the former. That is the view I am going to provide in this book. For full disclosure, I should note that I am a liberal voter who tends to vote Democratic. I only vote this way because no one has offered a position that demonstrates common sense and a valid path to make life better for everyone. Congress has often lied enough on both sides that the truth is hidden unless you have the intelligence to sort it all out.

I, for one, believe we should vote every Republican Lawmaker running in 2022 out of office. That will give the Democrats a super-majority. Then I say,

"Fix it or get out!"

I suggest the Democrats because they have a much better track record than the Republicans, who favor making the wealthier, well wealthier, and crapping on everyone else. Republicans sell a pyramid scheme touting that their followers can achieve a top rung while they are the ones paying for the top rungs to live a better life.

Don't worry; the Democrats will be getting their lumps too. For all their bluster to make things better, they suffer from two significant character flaws; no guts and they too are embedded with big money so they too can hold on to power.

Take a trip with me and visit what I believe is a humorous but disturbing look at politics in the United States today.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! So often all I hear is the bullies yelling their hate. To hear the voices of the those willing to stand up to the hate and expose it for what it is, is inspirational and deeply comforting. Kindness and inclusion, love and respect still live in this world and I am deeply thankful. My living and my words must give evidence of where I stand in each and every moment.

I would like to comment on something I noticed when Trump was with Putin in Helsinki. At the beginning of the media conference Trump was his usual blustery and pompous self. He went into a side room with Putin for a few minutes when he came out his expression completely changed. He looked like someone punched him in the guts. What had Putin said to him?He was asked if he thought Russia had interfered with the election. His weak answer was'Mr Putin assures him they hadn't' mmmmmmmm!!!!!
