Loved this series-presentation. She had what it takes. Good that she was an example of guitarist, writers that came after her. She was a great example.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing information about his amazing woman/musician. There is actually a multi-part documentary about her life on YouTube beginning with this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RuVzm86oB1Y It's too good to miss!
I enjoyed the videos of Sister Rosetta Tharpe. I didn’t know about her before and was interested to learn about her music and life. I find the Saturday smiles to be great exposure to our culture. Thank you.
Good morning. I get Steady sent to my work email, so I always read the Saturday smile on Monday (lest there's a holiday, then Tuesday) mornings. I enjoy them and click on the links/videos. Thank you for them! (PS I had never heard of Rosetta Tharpe - but what a talent!)
I have enjoyed many of your “Smile for a Saturday”. Some, like this one, open my mind to music and art that I never knew before. It is a nice way to spend a portion of every weekend. I like to share with my wife and daughters. Thank you for providing us smiles as well as thoughtful insight into current events.
I am a musician myself, yet I have never heard of Sister Rosetta Tharpe. What an amazing artist, what a legend! And what an asset to all the precious things the black community has given to our society.
Now I know where Rock 'n' Roll came from. What an amazing lesson!
What a shame history has written out so many amazing artists due to color and/or gender. It’s criminal. Thanks for your help bringing to light such a great part of American music. She inspired the people who inspired the Beatles, Stones and unfathomable others. Thanks Dan, always the consummate journalist.
I love the Saturday Smiles! I had not heard of Sister Rosetta Tharpe until this article. She was a very talented lady and indeed, I believe she was a great influencer of rock & roll. Thank you for sharing and teaching me a bit of history.
Your Saturday Smiles do indeed bring smiles to me and to those to whom I forward them. Head bowed, I had not heard ion Rosetta Tharpe before reading your post, and I love seeing/hearing her. Thank you for adding to my repertoire of notable people in the world of music, especially our Black brothers and sisters. Please keep bringing us smiles on Saturdays.
