If "Canary in a coal mine" was an expression that could be used in contemporary commentary, I would use it to characterize Rather's September 2016 clairvoyant warning of the consequences of ignoring candidate Trump's capacity to manipulate the media and the public discourse that followed. If "I told you so" was an expression that carried any positive effect at all, I would highlight its use in Rather's recent commentary republishing his 2016 warning. So, I won't.

I saw Kristin Welker's interview with Trump. He controlled the whole interview. So many things she could easily have challenged him on. This needs to be done. If they're going to interview him - challenge him and show his lies. Otherwise, don't give him any airtime.
It feels like 2016 all over again. The media covers Trump and his vicious lies 24/7, while giving grudging lip service to President Biden's accomplishments. It's sickening. Much of the media have become corporate whores chasing ratings and profits. I can't wait until I no longer have to see Trump's hateful face plastered all over the news. Remember Walter Cronkite? Remember his reaction to ratings? Remember when he said his profession that of being journalist and truthteller was now dead when ratings were announced? I remember him. He did his work in the 1960s and 70s on TV--black and white, no color yet. My family--adults and children--gathered to listen to him every evening. When he said these words, I, an elementary student, cried. I didn't understand why this great man was so upset; I only knew that I could trust him and if he was upset, there was something to be greatly concerned about.

Trump has already irreparably destroyed democracy because a large number of Americans with no respect for democracy would prefer a Trump dictatorship. 91 felony charges mean nothing to the MAGA crowd. They will share the blame.
