I pray it will somehow put my state of WI back into the legislative hands of rational people, but we are so gerimandered that is nearly impossible. I also hope it keeps Trump and all Republicans far from the White House.!

Abortion I think is a wedge issue that extreme Republicans seem to be using in a divide and conquer strategy. These Republicans seem to want to cling to power.

Anti-choice Republicans need to ask themselves when did the Higher Power make them judge of which situations "Thou shalt not kill" applies and which it does not. In war and self-defense, for example, it is acceptable.

The trajectory indicates that from the Presidential election down to state assemblies Democrats will assume greater majorities. The "unrestrained judicial activism" led by Alito and Thomas is more offensive even than the draconian laws passed by state legislatures; I well recall the "impeach Earl Warren" wing of the Republican Party that complained about legislating from the bench. In the end, these issues will be up to the voters to decide, with a real possible outcome being that the Republican Party will gain enough power to eliminate that option. Knowing all of this, if We the People get this wrong ... we will get exactly what we deserve. The anecdotes of women being harmed and abused post-Dobbs (and many, many others) will be an hors d'oeuvre.

What I find very disturbing are the legions of people who ought to know how federal spending is really carried out. And the dishonesty of subscribing to the orthodox Economists view that we actually have a "Debt" to pay. We do not. What is called the "US Debt" (that runs on the clock in Times Square) is nothing but a 250 year-old accounting of how much money the Federal Government has spent into our economy, and not taxed back. Of course it goes up! This is the money we all have in our pockets, our savings and checking accounts, and our pension plans. Providing American citizens with money in the Federal Government's Job. The "US Debt" and the "Deficit Spending" tropes are used constantly by politicians to deny us things many other country's citizens have. Both these terms are about nothing but bookkeeping. There is no debt. Deficit Spending is GOOD. We can see that in Pres. Biden's three major spending bills during the pandemic.

Interestingly what anti abortion groups have won is degrading their own support. They by their wins is creating an even more divided voting populace. Once again they may be their own undoing? Not the smartest strategists for the long game. Even the conservative Supreme Court is proving to be unwilling to hand over the country and its systems of checks and balances.

Well, like history shows, people are wont to do the right thing until the wrong thing becomes so unbearable, they are forced to make a positive change.

The overturning of Roe forces those people who have been comfortable with corruption, inequality, and just plain old wrong acts, by the Republicans, to stand for what's Right, not just the "right." So, in summary, I foresee a tsunami of formerly conservative voters coming to their senses, and realizing that the only way to stop this deterioration of democratic rights and principles, is to kick the so-called right-wing conservatives out!; if not for their sakes, for the sake of their grandkids, and their country. And, I for one, can't wait to see it happen!!

How sad that Life is imitating art....it may seem like a convenient comparison, but America is really becoming a Theocracy like in Margaret Atwoods "The Handmaids Tale", where rich, white (fake) 'christian' MEN rule the country and women are property to be used for their pleasure. We're quickly losing democracy in the US. I hope we dont have a staged terrorist attack which allows the Right Wing Extremist Theocrats to seize control of our govt. #VoteBluetoSaveAmerica

WOW! Once again you have said it all. I’ve been in Ireland for the last two weeks. History has been violent in the past but that hopefully is in the past. Abortion is legal. Women are no longer second class citizens. In Dublin yesterday, I witnessed a glorious and very happy Gay Freedom Day Parade. I’ve heard of no violence or angry opposition to this glorious celebration. It is with sadness that I will be returning home to all that is hateful in America. The Irish love their country because they fought and suffered through so much to gain their independence. We must resolve to get out the vote and save our Democracy.

No, although most politicians are rich. It is from personal experience. When abortion was mostly illegal, people with means and/or connections could still obtain one and so didn't seem to care that it could be a huge problem for others

We must change SCOTUS now. Ethics violations Alito and Thomas accepting $ or expensive trips and other perks from people with cases before them and not recuse themselves. Ethics violations they must go now. Also, several of them said they would not change standing laws - Trumps justices lied (big surprise). Also, Thomas and Kavanaugh were accused of sexual assaults. And we are stuck with these unethical creeps for life! We need Ethical Guidelines to throw out justices who are ethically compromised.

Great writing Mr Rather! This decision was a gratuitous attempt by power-hungry Republicans to take our country back to medieval times. It will ultimately do more damage than they ever saw coming, because it is hateful and punishing, affecting ALL women in this country, not just Democrats. It was a power play by corrupt old men who should not be anywhere near a Supreme Court. Women are not going to simply move on from this. Voting matters.
