On my 7th birthday, 1945, the atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki. I remember. I really do. I lived in Texas, but we still had blackout curtains. Hitler marched into Czechoslovakia in the year of my birth. I don't remember 1934 when my older sister was born. We lived in fear for years. I beg my fellow Americans to remember and if they can't, continue to read and notice history. Thank you, Dan Rather, fellow Texan, for keeping it real for us.

I hope you don't run out of nails Dan, you are so good at hitting them on the head.

Everything you say here is true and I hope your 'reminders' are noticed before it takes a big slap in the face like the one when the gleeful German people believing all of Hitlers lies woke up one morning to hundreds of B-52s were daylight carpet bombing Berlin.

Sooner or later...it all WILL get real.

Dan, I read "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich" by William L Shirer last April. 1711 pages. Some was breathtaking, some tedious, all a detailed chronicle of Hitler's life, the rise of the Nazis, and how a society can be duped, wrapped in fear and and totally subverted. 10,000,000 civilians including 6,000,000 were murdered on Hitler's orders.

Today? Most under the age of 25 don't even know who we fought in WWII, when or why. It is truly frightening.

From a 75 year old Houstonian about to mark 50 years as a Texas resident, enticed to Houston in 1974 to sell tv time by a start-up Independent. My 1st week in Houston you were here to, as CBS White House Correspondent. Richard Nixon was here, I believe to headline an NAB Convention.

Nixon: "Mr. Rather are you running for something?"

You: "No sir, Mr. President. Are YOU?"

That was my second day in Houston. The years fly by too fast.

Please, sir, keep speaking out!

Once again Dan Rather has captured the angst and downright fear most have. I remember being taught in school that this (fascism) could never happen here. We were stronger than German citizens. Well, look where we are!

After all class...don't forget we have the constitution and its checks and ballances...then came the famous last words before any nation falls to facism...It can NEVER happen here.

Yes. Alarming. Even the so called “good” presidents have the potential to go bad, like Bukele in El Salvador. But Trump is alarming. Democracy does not survive ignorance and as you point out, people don’t know history.

When The Dunceald was elected in 2016, i turned to my wife and commented that we’d been transported back to Berlin, January 1933. His supporters mocked and lots of sensible folks scoffed. The time to shine a light into the darkest recesses of the American Fascist’s mind is well at hand.

Thank Dan. I am disturbed that people don't remember Hitler, but your second sentence saying it is to taught says it all.

The Spanish philosophy George Santayana said 'those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it". David Reno says "You can neither remember nor forget that which you never knew in the first place."

When people called Moms for Liberty want to ban books, the name deserved the George Orwell award for Double speak.

I suggest you read Sinclair Lewis;' novel It Can't Happen Here about Fascism coming to America. His wife Dorothy Thompson was a foreign correspondent who had interview Hitler. She feared it would happen here,. While it may not be one of his best novels, such as Main Street, Elmer Gantry it is worth a read,.

I would mention one fact people may not know,. When I visited the Holocaust museum in Washington I learned the word Holocaust was first used by Newsweek magazine to describe the BURNING OF BOOKS. In America wee don't have to turn books since according to the Department of Education about 54% of Americans can't read at sixth grade level.

Thank you for addressing this very serious threat in such a reasonable and measured tone. And as you may have heard,, on Sat., Feb 10th in S.C. Trump shared a story from his time in office that confirms the moral hazard he represents. He said, “One of the presidents of a big country stood up and said, ‘Well, sir, if we don’t pay and we’re attacked by Russia, will you protect us?’ I said, ‘You didn’t pay. You’re delinquent.” Then Trump added, “No, I would not protect you. In fact, I would encourage them to do whatever the hell they want.”

There sure was a lot of leftist dictators during the 20th century as well, who all based their leadership on Marxism. I think the far right and the far left are the same in that aspect, and there are a lot of warning signals on the left as well. Perhaps this could have been written as a non-biased piece against both sides? I mean, you seemed to have skipped the most obvious connection from the holocaust to Israel to the re-emergence of antisemitism and Jew-hatred? Who is doing that by the way? Clue: it isn’t Trump…

Expand full comment

oh no...Trump and his racist right wing white supremist have NOTHING to do with it...they just LOVE the Jews.

Indert a BIG BLUE SQUARE here while I continue to pray for the innocent Palestinian victims of their terrorist leaders...it's what our terrorist leaders have in store for us.

Expand full comment

Which terrorist leaders? The democratically elected leaders of Israel? I see people hating on Jews all the time in rally’s, demonstrations, “from the river to the sea”, etc. They are from the left, not the right. This post completely avoids that problem. It’s glaringly dishonest because of it.

If you don't think that what Trump and his band of thugs in the GOTP did to TENS of THOUSANDS of innocent women and children who's only crime was thinking we would care if they lived or died was NOT an act of terror then we have nothing left to discuss.

School yourself, please.

Although your remarks about the 20th century are not completely correct, it matters less because we're 25% of the way through the 21st century. And for the record, yes, it is Trump and his sycophants who are doing exactly that.

Oh really? :) I’d be thrilled to see some actual arguments.

There’s plenty of rampant antisemitism on any news channel (pro-Palestine), and fyi I have never watched Fox E in my life. Harping about the holocaust but avoiding upsetting people who are currently infatuated with “Palestine” is I a little weak. And I still see no actual arguments in reply to my post.

Turn off the Fox Entertainment Channel and put on some actual news. If yiou just pay attention you won't need anyone to arguee with.

The facts are there...Trump is a monster.

Leanna: Thanks for the correction, and unfortunately I do believe your husband was correct. Most Americans don't think outside of our four walls (borders). This must change. If you get a chance, read From Democracy to Democrazy by Graham. It will provide far more details, facts, and evidence. Happy Super Bowl Sunday, Elizabeth www.democrazy2020.org

The US Government has never been more repressive - aggressively monitoring and censoring our “free speech” - perhaps a reaction to Trump, but hardly his fault.
