This happened in Decatur Illinois in 1982 just a slightly smaller version and at that time it was considered a terrible accident. No politics involved! we were all evacuated, windows blown out of the home, glass chards straight through solid wood chairs. we woke to a large yellow cloud of fire thinking it was the end of the world but we stood as one and got through, not fighting each other nor playing the almighty blame game as the way we so sadly go in today’s world. Terrible disasters strike and now all we turn to is hate not the love needed to bring us all together…

DEFEAT CON REPUBLICONS EVERYWHERE AND MAKE AMERICA SMART AGAIN.  AND JAIL CRIMINAL Rtrump AND cronies

The conservative Republicans are willing to offer thoughts and prayers rather than strong gun safety laws when school children are killed. What makes us think they’ll do more than that in the train derailment that could affect the health and safety of adults and children for years to come?

It says that this bunch of sad souls will stop at nothing tp defend their prejudices. It also says that we have got to join together and stop them.it won’t be easy but is has to happen.

Make it perfectly clear that the accident occurred because of safety precautions removed by Trump and rules and regulations must be put back in place. And when TFG goes out to make noise about the disaster - all media should put it at his feet. Also Biden should look at dangerous laws put in place by the blowhard - and be investigated for potential for disasters.

Sadly, this will be no different than mass shootings. Much outrage and finger pointing followed by nothing. The story is already fading from the few national news outlets that covered it in the first place.

The people in charge of train transportation don't listen to their engineers on the ground then all hell breaks loose

Good points, but there’s no remedy for stupid. People die every day on our nation's roads and highways because of stupid behavior such as talking on a cell phone while driving.

You know the old saying about wishing in one hand and spitting in the other, right? Well, I sincerely wish that our politicians and corporate bosses could all stop acting like young kids on the schoolground and stop throwing knee jerk accusations around every time some kind of disaster happens. If they don't remember the train, plane and ship accidents that happened in the '50s, '60s and '70s, then they need to read up on them. Those accidents are the main reason for the regulations that have been in place since then. For generations the mass transportation industry was allowed to run rampant, and while chemical disasters were infrequent, thousands of lives were lost. It was only a matter of time until an accident like the one in New Palestine happened, especially if the labor force was being curtailed by the owners and managers, or improperly trained - take your pick. The shame, blame and guilt finger pointing by certain G.O.P. folks is stupid, stupid, stupid. (I'm not sorry for being so blunt and tactless, considering who I'm pointing my finger at.)

Thanks for explaining it to me. Praying for all to have discernment of the truth and supernatural wisdom to make decisions that this can be avoided in the future.

To his credit, EPA Director Michael Regan has opened an office of his agency in East Palestine, directing its mission to be in perpetuity-so as to monitor and address the long-term, as well as immediate, effects of the tragedy. President Biden has said that for him to personally show up in the town would be interpreted as a meaningless photo op. One could say that about ANY political leader's appearance, anywhere. The value of such an appearance is better assessed by what it means for the affected populace.

There was a fair amount of grumbling about his visit to Virginia Beach, yesterday, because it happened in the afternoon, when schools were letting out and day shift workers were getting ready for rush hour. Scheduling, though, has always been a wrinkle. Again, the visit was meant to address issues of concern to a significant percentage of the local populace. Otherwise, it would not have been made.

I agree with you. We need thoughtful regulations that work with businesses to keep our society moving forward. You cannot trust either powerful corporations or politicians to do the right thing. I’ll be interested to hear what others have to say about this.

This is not about Trump and Biden....please. Everybody blames the president for everything and that is so childish. I despise Trump, but he is not the reason that train derailed. The cleanup will happen. It will take many years, if the train disaster in Quebec some years ago is an example. And then watch the court room dancing for another decade. Wonder why it takes so long to get anything done?

I come from an Engineering background and I used to have a hard time believing that something that is a relatively small item, such as a wheel bearing, could cause something as bad as this. After discussing a wheel bearing caused trackside inferno with a former railroad mechanic I was told that these can get almost white hot - to the point they might melt - as they deteriorate, sometimes a result of poor maintenance. The chain is only as strong as the weakest link. The railroads have been on a crusade to cheapen their labor and I believe sincerely this is a direct outcome of that type of practice.

Sadly, "the people" are so uninformed that they will vote for the very people that would ALLOW this to happen!! When Lobbyists rule it's a No-Win for the American public. Who "lobby's" for the public?

Excellent analysis as usual Mr Rather 👏 👍 we know that we will get the truth about what happened, unlike the twisted pronouncements of Fox News and their ilk.

Glad 😊 we Americans 🇺🇸 have a reporter that will hold their feet to the fire 🔥 and make them accountable if possible 😉 Can't believe DeSantis called his new book

Courage to be Free when he has taken so many freedoms from so many others as just a governor. Beware in 2024, especially if he teams 🤔 up with Fox News 🤔
