Perhaps words and music are ultimately most powerful in changing hearts and soothing minds. This is wonderful.

Keep these beautiful words and sounds coming. Stunning work by Rhiannon and Mavis. Trees have always brought me to peace.....and this song is so powerful for its history and for its imagery.

Similarly powerful for it's insight on who to follow is Psalm 1: 1-41:

"Blessed is the one

who does not walk in step with the wicked

or stand in the way that sinners take

or sit in the company of mockers,

but whose delight is in the law of the Lord,

and who meditates on his law day and night.

That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,

which yields its fruit in season

and whose leaf does not wither—

    whatever they do prospers."

Your best commentary on the horrors of violence yet Mr. Rathers. No truer truth than to hold onto the Lord in times of troubled waters. In good times too. Though we may not have practical answers for why these senseless deaths keep occurring, we can do our part not to add to their numbers. Yes saying “thoughts and prayers” has lost its sincerity, but prayers spoken and unspoken go a longer way than rioting and smash and grab do. More conversations and convictions against killings will at some point turn to healing and more consideration for human life. I pray. Lawana Holmes

Thank you so much for this...tears in my eyes and heart. We need to hear to remember this everyday.

I remember singing this at the University of Wisconsin during the protests of the 1960's-70's, inserting: "it's our university, we shall not be moved" or "although we don't have nightsticks, we shall not be moved".

Rhiannon and Paul Simon sang “American Tune” on the special “Homeward Bound: A Grammy Salute to the Songs of Paul Simon” that was on CBS this past December. I think that it is equally moving and relevant to present times...

Mr.Rather and Elliot, the song that you shared with us today has a powerful message and is so

relevant to the issues today.. I really enjoyed listening to the music of artist Rhiannon Giddens and the music of artist Mavis Staples. They both sang with a lot of emotion and feeling. I could feel the strength and hope in the lyrics of the song.

Thank you for sharing.

Without hope, we are done for, Nick. Nobody gets to take my hope away. I am often ridiculously persistent.
