Magnificent think piece by Dan Rather, as always. One minor correction needs to be made to the second paragraph. It reads: “After this week’s trial, we now know that what we saw that day was but a small peak at the full fury and violence of the insurrectionists.”

The word “peak” should be ‘peek’ instead.

What happened on January 6 should have never happened. It's sad to think that a person who just didn't wanna lose an election lost as mine and so many people were hurting injured and he can't take responsibility because he's a worthless person And The poor police who had to try and stop that mob Some got killed some died somewhere injured just so sad I wish that people would wake up and do the right thing but that's probably not gonna happen as long as There is a trumpet in the room Sounding is horn spewing lies

This is the best commentary I have ever read on this topic. Thank you for spelling it all out for us in irrefutable detail.

We must have order with millions of people. What if we get attacked or raped who is going to save us from home invasions and arsonists and murderers? We need our laws! Otherwise this nation will fail! Do we want people, innocent people who have worked hard their whole lives to die? A normal thinking person can see what's going on

I will always be on the side of the police, acknowledging that there will be bad apples. I was married to a police officer years ago. We met when I was working at the local police department and he was a cadet. He went through the academy and fulfilled his dream of becoming a police officer. Sadly, cancer took his life when our daughter was only 14 months old. I often wonder what he would think of the state of things in this country now. The police on Jan. 6 were obviously outnumbered and overwhelmed. From what I have seen, however, they did what they could under the circumstances. My late husband was a decent, caring person and I believe that if had been at the Capitol on Jan. 6, he would have done whatever he could to protect our fragile democracy.

I knew in my heart as I’m sure many did that he would be acquitted of his crimes. I’m horrified to think that any of us would have to put up with anymore of Trumps lawlessness. He is never held accountable for any of the disgusting things he does. Where does it end? What happened to the Republican Party? They bow to him like he’s a sacred cow. So many questions and no good answers. I really had hoped that he would finally go away and spend the millions he and his family bilked the taxpayers out of over the last 4 years. I have never despised anyone as I do him. Something has to be done to stop his destruction of our democracy. So disgusted with the Republican Party.

Thank you Dan, your writing, words and thoughts are very inspirational. We do have some very hard work ahead as we fight to bring racial justice to our system of enforcing our laws. We must all join in and silence is not an option.

... not much more to add here, except the GOP has traded this country for a red hat.

Thank you for creating a system that validates the steady middle, the grey between black and white. The right has glorified extremism for decades now. Law and Order is a buzzword for their rigid attachment to power that thinly veils their fear.

"Law and Order". It also, besides slavery has it's roots in colonialism. In the fact that the U.S. government stripped the native population of this country of their lands, their children and their languages.

At that time the power of our government was determined to commit genocide on these people, and they succeeded in murdering the people of some tribes down to the last infant.

The trail of tears is a black cloud over our past deeds that cannot be erased.

Until we bring a reckoning to all of those wronged in creating the America we now live in, peace will be elusive.

We need to bring the truth of these events into the light of day, to teach the reality of past mistakes to the current generation and answer their questions in a truthful and forthright manner.

We also have a very deep divide on the matter of religion. Last year we had a president that claimed to be a Christian in order to tap the efforts of the religious right on his behalf. I personally doubt he spent more than two hours total in churches during his four years in office and that only for the publicity. He is a hypocrite and a liar and he led a credulous population of evangelical Christians around by the nose. I knew one such lady, a good person that honestly believed that he represented her faith.

Trump demonized Muslim, Buddhists, Wiccans and anyone else that wasn't mainstream Christian.

There is so much that was done in the past four years that will take decades to undo. This morning as I watched the snow fall outside my window, I read about a group of 21 children and infants that had just been deported out of the U.S. by ICE. They were not accompanied by adults and there was no explanation given as to why they were deported.

How can we believe in an America that does such things? I don't feel that I can but maybe others will.
