There can be no doubt that the “republican establishment “ and their wealthy elite handlers, will do everything in their power to steal this election. The media, once the people’s watchdog, the fourth estate, is complicit in this coup attempt. It’s all about money and power—-how much is enough?—-and they know DJT will do whatever he’s told as long as they stroke his tiny fragile ego. The youth can, and I believe will, come to our rescue again. We must overwhelm them at the polls.
Yes!!! Great comment. My sweetheart and also a big social justice advocate George Michael wrote a song titled just that, "How Much is Enough?!" about the dangers of wealth and stardom. He would be absolutely horrifed at the state we're in today. He died right at beginning of Trump's ascendancy.
Meanwhile Voter intimidation tactics have already begun in Texas.
Me too. He wrote some really deep and meaningful songs. "Praying for Time" is another one of his that has struck me lately. He wrote that one in the run up to the Iraq war. One of the few people who spoke out against it. He was quite a thorn in the side of the Blair administration at the time. Lol
To quote another song "It's like an addiction". I think wealth and power are like this for some. Even in my own experience, the good feelings one gets from attaining higher levels of wealth are only there when the wealth is increasing. One can get obsessed about the next level of income, thinking "once I get this much money THEN I'll be satisfied" But the satisfaction is fleeting and then the person starts obsessing about the next level, thinking THAT'S going to be the one. It's not unlike the drug addict chasing that ultimate high(with more and more of the drug) that always seems just out of reach. And nothing takes away a person's humanity quite like an addiction.
Another line from a song that I really like, which is a great counter to the endless pursuit of more: "It's not having what you want, it's wanting what you've got"
Power corrupts. Anyone who has been awake for the last few years knows that. It is also true, however, that we the people can claim power in voting blue.
Whoops, I actually thought you were talking about a different singer and a different song. Martin Simpson sang, "More Than Enough" and both my husband and I were both incredibly moved. He tells a very touching story about his father (also a folksinger) and this song. The song itself is at 3:44. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVB2gEHGUZE
Hope you listen and I hope you like it as much as I do. I'm going to listen to "Praying For Time" Thanks for broadening my world.
You are the only person I follow now. The only person who has stayed true to his beliefs and his conscience and told the truth consistently. So many other columnists go for catchy headlines and take somethings out of context. THANK YOU Dan, for staying “steady”. I know I can trust your comments!
Might I suggest you also try following Heather Cox Richardson. Her very thorough &: comprehensive nightly email & FB posts are illuminating. She is a treasure as well.
today's chat was so important....and what she said at the end is how it is for me....did you watch ? let me know what you think/feel about what she said....please.
Heather Cox Richardson also shares her daily column in her podcast. When my eyes are tired from consuming news, it’s great to just listen to her daily message in her own voice. Truly a treasured historian.
And Robert Hubbell's Today's Edition. And Joyce Vance's Civil Discourse. And Greg Olear's Prevail. To name a few. All to say we have many prominent voices who speak on the side of democracy.
There are quite a few on this platform that are worth reading along with Steady. They all appreciate financial support but you can read them without it. My go to reads are Heather Cox Richardson, Jay Kuo, Joyce Vance, Simon Rosenberg and Scott Dworkin. All give great insight to what is going in our world right now.
PS if you are from Gananoque I loved that area as I was raised a couple of hours drive north. Take care
Donna, Great group, I also really like Robert Reich and Elliot Kirschner. Watching Jon Stewart, John Oliver, and Stephen Colbert also help. These are trying times. These are people along with their commenters that help me feel connected to a community that also loves democracy and this planet.
I watch Stewart, Colbert and Oliver as well. I've watched them since the beginning, when they were on the Daily Show when Jon hosted. America's Anchors. I have a Rolling Stone cover with Stewart and Colbert, with those words.
I follow Dan faithfully, but I would also suggest you follow Heather Cox Richardson's Letters and also follow Joyce Vance. They, like Dan, have enormous integrity and a passion for saving our country from the MAGA crowd. I have learned an incredible amount of information from them. Just google their names and sign up.
I agree with most of your comment and empathize with the rest. That said there is a young newcomer with podcasts on you tube. He is reasonable, speaks with common sense and is interesting in his basic take on current political issues. Ive ver y little I could find faultwiyh. Mr Rather if you are not aware of him yet, you would find him interesting also, I m sure. Did I mention he's very young. Enjoy. Oh yeah, his name is Luke Beaseley, hes on You Tube for sure and maybe other platforms.
We must vote for Democrats all the way up and down the ticket. Every single vote counts. Dems need to hold the White House, expand the Senate and win back the House in a landslide. And win state and local elections as well.
Once again. Blame the mainstram media for ignoring President Biden and his accomplishments. It's all Trump all the time and once in a rare moment, a mention of something, usually not good, that Biden has done.
Exactly! That's why I read and share "What Has Joe Biden Done Today" on an almost daily basis. The MSM has left us behind, and we need to be in their faces about it every damn day.
Historian and Substack contributor Heather Cox Richardson https://www.facebook.com/heathercoxrichardson does a fantastic job of detailing all that Biden has done. But her 2 million followers are already on board.
BINGO! President Biden has accomplished more than any president in history since Franklin D. Roosevelt. Why his accomplishments aren't being lauded every day is beyond my comprehension. It's infuriating, actually.
Correct...I am so disappointed in them. Good heavens, how can you say you love this country & help spread destruction. At least give equal time & attention.....!!!
I’m forwarding this to my 23 year old Grandson and asking him to be sure and vote and also to send this out to one of his buddies and so on. By doing so we can turn this country blue again and bring back prosperity for all. It may take several election cycles to turn the ship around but be patient and play the long game. All you need to do is look at the mess in the Supreme Court. That was preventable if enough Democrats had voted for Hilary instead of staying home. Never think your vote doesn’t count.
The saddest part of this is what you observed. The young voters are much more aligned with Biden's positions, but Trump controls the media which they check for news. The MAGA crowd is all in on retribution and revenge. They focus on why Fauci was wrong to insist on masks and distancing, thereby taking away their freedom. Let's not mention the million lives lost! Again, no mention of the positive programs of the Biden administration. They won't support what they don't know, and they will vote for what they feel take away their rights. We have to get the correct news to the public, all segments of it. Otherwise Trump will win.
I am so glad you have mentioned Jon Stewart in your comments today. I too believe that the youth vote is extremely important for all of us. There could not be a better voice than Jon Stewart to reach the young voters.
I have been talking with my older grandchildren who are voters, about how important it is for them to vote. All of us should be engaging with young people every chance we get. I regularly ask the young person checking me out at the grocery store if they are registered to
vote. I ask at the bank, at the hair salon, at the nail salon, at the fast food restaurant.
We need to start talking to one another and help one another understand the importance of voting.
Rhonda, I was going to write about doing the same thing. I’m always asking young people if they are registered to
vote. As an octogenarian I feel I can get by with asking. If they tell me they are registered, I ask them if they are going to the polls to vote. They can be registered and still not vote. As Medgar Evers from my state of Mississippi who was killed by the KKK, always said to his people:
I am so glad to hear that you ask these young people if they are registered to vote! I believe all of us older Americans need to engage with young people whenever we can.
I have had so many interesting conversations with younger people after asking them if they are registered. Many of them are informed and even tell me things I am not aware of. So many of these young people "get it", and they are doing whatever they can to help.
There needs to be a greater emphasis on teaching courses in Civics & Government in our schools too. Leaving this part of education to social media and the family just isn't enough.
Young people do have a lot of influence, but their actions have more influence than their words. Most of the decisions made in government are about issues with which they have little experience, such as the economy, foreign relations, national security, medical care, law, business management, social services, etc. Instead of expecting to be in charge, it’s a good time to gather more specialized expertise and information. Very few people act and believe the same way at age 35 than they did at age 22 after they had children, found and maintained housing, and were self-sufficient.
The place where they can be most influential is in learning how to select candidates, working to help them win, and vote..
I’m 63, and I’m anxious! More so however that the kids won’t show up to vote! We need them! We need everyone voting for Biden! He truly cares about the issues, it’s not mere lip service! If they want to keep freedom to choose, freedom of speech, a President not a dictator, I beg them to come out and tell the country what they want, who they are! They MATTER!
I think every generation feels this way, at least at the start. Participation is good cure. And, this time around, unfortunately, there is no other choice but to vote Dem for everything. It must be a landslide.
They are voting with their hearts, which are broken right now. Voting Biden is voting with your head because they have to rationalize voting for the least bad option.
The key thing for Democrats to do - no matter what age - is to VOTE. Come out and keep the White House Blue and turn Congress Blue.
Jon Stewart as are you Dan Rather is a national treasure
I absolutely agree!
So agree
ABSOLUTELY!

Yes. YES INDEED!!!🇺🇲

Keep fighting the good fight dear friends. We cannot let them win!!! ❤️🇺🇸💙
I love that song (How much is Enough). Beautiful and searing.
Me too. He wrote some really deep and meaningful songs. "Praying for Time" is another one of his that has struck me lately. He wrote that one in the run up to the Iraq war. One of the few people who spoke out against it. He was quite a thorn in the side of the Blair administration at the time. Lol

YES David!! Exactly. Being grateful for what you have. I love it!!!

For sure Elaine!!! 💙💙💙

Yes I love Heather too. I just signed up to be a paid Subscriber to her over the Weekend!!
I read her every night.
TG for HCR.. she got me through Trump‘s “presidency“ and she still is a guiding light every morning.
I do, too, plus I love her weekly live chats! 🥰
today's chat was so important....and what she said at the end is how it is for me....did you watch ? let me know what you think/feel about what she said....please.
As are Jay Kuo, and Joyce Vance. Plus, Hopium Chronicles.

what a time we live in....such great info coming to us from these many great people who are standing up for Democracy.
ABSOLUTELY!!! She is indeed a treasure. Solid information & history. Not opinion based. Straight truth and

I do the same thing Rhonda. Everywhere I go.
That's awesome Lisa. Be sure to spread the word to all your friends to do the same. 😉
Thank you Dan, this will be the most consequential vote in 2 generations.
Vote, like the future depends on it, because it does.
Young people do have a lot of influence, but their actions have more influence than their words. Wise words from the greatest generation to the newest first time presidential voting bloc👏🙏🏼☮️
