Something to think about: a lot has been made recently about Trump's declining mental acuity. He often can't seem to keep a thought long enough to form a complete sentence. But.... Trump controls the MAGA cult, and the MAGA folks are loyal to him in spite of a growing list of shortcomings. I think the MAGAs are going to attempt to win or steal the election with Trump at the top of the ticket, but soon after - within a year at most - Trump steps aside and we are left with President Vance. Trump's only interest is in WINNING, not governing. If he's successful I do not see him wanting to be bothered with the nitty gritty of actually governing. No one thinks that Vance on his own is electable for anything, so this is the only way to get him in the door as VP.

Trump will be a dictator and never give up power once he has it, unless his puppeteers find a way to take it from him. They need him to do as they wish in his name, as much as he actually needs them to make him look like he can do anything! He’s legitimately and authentically mentally ill and now also clearly declining with dementia and or the like. Bottom line, he’s completely 1000 percent not fit for office and beyond dangerous if back in office* As for Vance, he’s a whole other level of “not wellness” and possibly as dangerous or worse than Trump! Vote Blue up and down the ballot to make sure we will have a country that evolves by choice and not by chance* Simply answer the question: what do you want? Freedom or Tyranny? Democracy or Fascism? Because how you vote will determine what you get*

The Republican party and entire right wing apparatus support Trump/Vance - no matter. I am leery of polls in general, but it is nice to have them on your side - and Trump increasingly does in crucial states. In many places where Harris has slipped in the polls, Jill Stein has surged. Her 1-2% support could determine the race - which is exactly what makes her attractive to those out to punish the Democratic party, no matter the pain to those a Republican administration will irreparably harm. Cue the happy music on Putin's and Netanyahu's play lists.

When Hitler's coup attempt failed, he went legit. His election win was spurred by Stalin splitting German Communists from the German Center Left. Putin allied Stein is doing the same here - splitting the American Far Left from the Center Left Democratic party. Cue the happy music in the quisling camp.

Those of us not dancing to those tunes, have a lot of work to do. We always have. Take heart.

Jill Stein is, like trump, a Friend of Pukin. How anyone still wants to support her, and thus essentially give their vote to trump, is WAAAAY beyond my comprehension. She is a very scary person.

Expand full comment

"... WAAAAY beyond my comprehension."

Stein voters have been explicit about their support:

they believe there is a scenario in which she wins; they want to teach the Democratic party a lesson for not appealing to them; they want Trump to win because if things get bad enough then the people will rise up for a socialist revolution.

And they take no responsibility for the harm of empowering Trump et al.

And then there are the unreasonable and counterfactual articles of faith. Which demonstrates the irrational habits of mind shared by ideological and religious 'true believers.'

Stein is an ego driven shill of bigger egos. Not so much scary as despicable. In the way hypocrites and cheats tend to be. cf Leonard Leo.

This is entirely a problem created by FOX News and its lesser imitators, who either don't report on gaffes by Trump--or any other GOP politician--or who sanewash his gibberish. The conservative spectrum of the Fourth Estate are entirely responsible, and have collectively abandoned any pretense of journalistic integrity, hiding behind their First Amendment right to sell opinion and entertainment as actual news.

It's time to hold RW "journalism" to account by either tightening up our libel laws; and/or making some sort of return to the Fairness Doctrine. The constant torrent of lies by RW media and politicians needs to stop, and voters need to once again have confidence that the Fourth Estate will present facts and not make-believe.

Expand full comment

Unfortunately, it’s not just Fox News who’s guilty of terrible journalism! Let’s face it. The entire corporate media has not been given it to us straight. In addition to normalizing him all along, they’ve been telling us what Trump meant to say, what their interpretations are, and not what Trump himself has actually been in fact saying and doing. This one example Rather points out is too little too late, way past due but if The NY Times has any integrity left they’ll start reporting just the honest truth and facts thank you very much, like real journalists finally doing their jobs and not people afraid of or cow tailing to Trump and his cronies…

Expand full comment

Don't disagree with you. But it's FOX et al who take a leadership role again and again in driving RW stories that benefit RW pols and constituencies, that over time become leading stories in the MSM. "Biden is Senile," e.g., was relentlessly pushed by FOX even before the 2020 primaries. The Critical Race Theory brouhaha is perhaps the greatest example of an obscure grad school course supposedly being used for anti-white indoctrination in every public school in America. The Franken senatorial hit-job harnessing #MeToo outrage is another example.

Furthermore, MSM--including NYT & WaPo--is not pro-Dem. It's arguably right-of-center regarding economic matters; and left-of-center only regarding social issues that reflect prevailing popular sentiment, like a woman's right to choose.

Expand full comment

I think it's due to cowardly media, who are desperately trying to avoid hate mail. May be wrong.

Expand full comment

Maybe. More likely journalists who come up with a few story ideas to write on; and their editor says, "Go ahead and write about that one."

The medial--left, right, and center--loves Trump immensely. Because every crazy or odious thing out of his mouth is guaranteed to generate clicks and eyeballs. NYT & WaPo readership exploded during '45; and both did skew slightly Leftwards. But both forgot pretty quickly that all that money both made was due to Liberal outrage at MAGA sliminess.

Expand full comment

This echos something I've written elsewhere, except Trump won't step aside. That's not within the capability of either his character or narcissism. Instead, one of two things happen. He's removed via the 25th Amendment, Vance takes over and names Johnson as his VP. Who becomes speaker will depend on who controls the House.

OR, he has a "heart attack" in the middle of the night, and Vance takes over. Again naming Johnson as his VP. Or someone very much like Johnson.

Of course this all depends very much on his winning the EC. If he loses in a landslide like many of us believe he will, then it's all moot.

Also, remember it's important for him to WIN in order to get all the court cases against him stopped. Or at least the federal ones.

Expand full comment

I go with "heart attack" (AKA poisoning, a la pukin). His followers will overthrow jd if he tries to pull a "25th".

Expand full comment

I go with a delicate "encouraging him to see what fun retirement would be." They will get increasingly concerned about how he appears before the public, nationally and internationally.

Trump's PR staff and advisors would figure out some glorified and politically correct excuse to the public to explain his "retirement, " and explain to the Cult that he will be an "advisor," keep his Truth Social, and be readily available to his fans (up to a point). Republicans are just trying to make it to the finish line, and if Trump is elected, their real intent for that four years is Vance, who will prove far more malleable and economically adept that Trump ever did. Peter Thiel's puppet.

But they might have a battle on their hands, considering the court cases, not all of which can be extinguished by another Trump Administration. Trump may fight being shuffled out.

Vance would not be the one able to push him out and anyway, the blowback from the Cult on Vance would be huge. Trump is their Messiah (let's see how long he can keep THAT up in retirement). Vance wants to be in politics for a while.
