Due to a spell-check error, the name of the scientist who wrote the article cited here was misspelled in some references in the emailed version of this piece. The correct name is Eric Topol. It has been changed here in the online version. We apologize for the error.

For those interested, Topol posts regularly in Twitter on issues surrounding Covid.

He is one of the people who has guided me through COVID on Twitter. Dr. Eric Feigl-Ding is another. Aaron Collins (@masknerd) was a godsend in terms of sorting out masks. The many folks who suffer from Long COVID and tweet about that have provided a valuable service in letting people know what that experience can be like. With all the disinformation and nonsense out there, being able to follow on Twitter a few amazing experts in their fields has been incredible. I also learned who *not* to follow!

I dropped Twitter. It started getting too ugly. Tempted to go back just for that information. I did follow them.

I just block like crazy on Twitter, which helps a lot. I also skim pretty quickly or else just go directly to their accounts to see their latest tweets. It's definitely gotten weird, but I'm hanging in there. If Long COVID is of interest, those people do still pop up. The palate cleansing "share your pet photos!" always help, too. :)

Interesting. Someone dear to me (I am not on twitter and neither is she, only FB) has been recently diagnosed as having Long COVID although she did not have any of the major symptoms of COVID. Can you recommend any trustworthy sources? She is naturally quite anxious about this.

Laura Miers (@LauraMiers) has 46,000 followers. If you/she follows her, you'll likely end up hearing from more. There are many who pop in, none of whom I recall by name.

Elizabeth Jacobs, PhD (@TheAngryEpi) is someone I follow. I don't recall if she actually has Long COVID, but she tweets about it sometimes.

Following them, or just looking over their followers, you'll find more people. If I'm remembering correctly, there are Long COVID "Spaces" in Twitter; those are times when folks gather and chat. Search on #LongCOVID in Twitter and you'll probably find lots of sources.

I recommend that she/you do Twitter, even though who knows what will unfold with Elon at the helm. I block with gusto to keep my feed sane and so far it's fine. It's worth navigating all that to be able to connect with these generous, wise experts and others. They may end up at Mastodon or Post or may already be there.

One person I'd avoid is Dr. Leana Wen, who writes for the Wash Post. Hearing straight from the folks I mentioned has proven to be a far more reassuring way to figure out what's happening. Another I just remembered is Dr. Bob Wachter, of UCSF (@Bob_Wachter). He often pops up in the media as an expert.

Hope that helps!

Most appreciated. Many thanks!👍👍

Another one I just saw is LongCovidPharmD (@organichemusic). She shares lots of information and seems knowledgeable.

My pleasure! My impression is that the folks with Long COVID appreciate the support, practical and emotional, that they are able to find from others on Twitter. There are probably even more resources to be found there; I just haven't looked. But I do appreciate their sharing, as it provides a perspective that I haven't seen much in the main stream media.

Eric Topol also has a Substack that I follow. Highly recommended.

Check Out My site: Reflections at 85. I just today posted the intro of my book,

Legacy in the Time of Covid

Covid Blessings, Covid Responsibilities.

It is a book for lay people to not forget, (and to talk about it, write about it, for the sake not only of ourselves, but the future.) Though it's easy to, but as your title says, "It Ain't Over Yet".

I would like permission to use some of your sentences as quotations in my book; can you let me know if that's possible? Thank you for seeing so clearly. Sometimes it gets lonely and to find a kindred spirit is a relief. Thank you for your post.

Thank you, and truly, thank you. I read every one of your pieces, and share quite a few of them with friends and family. A steady mind with a kind heart, well-chosen words, and a breath of fresh air continues to fill my body with hope. With blessings and gratitude from Albuquerque, NM

I believe it's also allied with climate change. And I don't want to sound like a nut, but I believe the end of the world is coming. This is just how nature progresses over the long term.

Yes . That is Hollywood today. Don’t kill the audience. Unbelievable . Just let the virus do it. There must be some alternative to Hollywood.

Sadly, we are killing ourselves.

I’m glad you addressed this. I don’t believe 90% of your followers are virus or vaccine deniers. I go out to doctors’ offices and see 3 of us (including myself) wearing masks in a room full of people. I walk into a retail store and see one other person wearing a mask aside from cashiers in one grocery store wearing masks! A Republican state with governors who made state law not to mandate masks because of his personal views. An Authoritarian!. Don’t move to FL

Expand full comment

I know what you mean I live in Florida also. And I live in a very republican county the mayor never made a mask mandate, even when it was bad. He eventually got Covid and was sick in the hospital for weeks. I don’t know how much that changed his mind. He did do an apology letter in the newspaper. Our sheriff did not let the officers wear mask. It was bad. I have long Covid but trying to get a doctor is really difficult. My primary I’ve had for years quit. All of my doctors now are people I’ve never seen before.

Yes but the thing is even counties were no longer keeping up with cases being reported. That’s why the Weather channel stopped posting local case numbers. Places stopped reporting and they weren’t getting info.

Expand full comment

I was taken back here in FL when the governor mandated the health dept to stop reporting! I found cdc.gov can give you the info.

But that’s if Florida reports to them. I don’t think they report on a regular basis.

The "vaccines" DON'T work, they may, in fact, make people MORE susceptible to Covid, it was DEMOCRATS who politicized the virus, and Dan Rather is a lying disgrace.

Shut up! And move on.

Oh look, a fascist who can't handle a truthful, honest opinion.

I can only take care of myself. I have been vaccinated, received a booster. I have not yet contracted Covid. I mask when appropriate.

Me too. The vaccines, boosters and masking do work. Haven’t caught Covid thanks to God.

100yo aunt has been in rehab 2 weeks in FL. They're now dealing with a COVID outbreak. She's not vaxxed due to a bad reaction to the first dose.

But "priming" the immune system is the whole idea. That's how vaccines work: by allowing the immune system to develop a defense against a pathogen without having go experience a full-blown infection.

And no, it doesn't guarantee immunity. Neither does going through a bout of Covid, it seems; reinfection cases among Covid patients aren't uncommon, partly due to the proliferation of variants but also due in some cases to the immune system's failure to build fully effective antibodies. That's probably at least partly genetic. The idea, though, is to encourage at least resistance against life-threatening cases.

Expand full comment

It probably won't yet there will be those who are vulnerable to it like the seasonal flu. And those who are immune compromised for whatever reason. Masks protect all of them. I know more people who got Covid after vaccines because they stopped wearing masks indoors. We do NOT have to get COVID.

Excellent! Excellent article that should be read and shared broadly and be required reading for those in the media who do reporting. Unfortunately , too many of our people seem to court stupid conspiracy theories than behaving responsibily in helping to stop the spread.

Expand full comment

No, the media will tell you Covid’s gone. It’s just not as bad as it was. I mean the outcome of Covid. But its still here and affects people differently. Some people get it and it’s like the cold and they move on and they’re fine. Other people get it and symptoms come and goes. Like they say they are still learning from it. Problem is a lot of doctors don’t know how to deal with it.

Thanks Dan. Berwick, PA has Covid very badly. It has never gone away. My tired Nurses ( friends) are extremely exhausted. Yes, Covid is back in the Hospitals and Nursing Homes in PA.

I will share your post.
