For the last 6 months I have avoided news and newspaper accounts having to do with mid-term elections, polls, and the embarrassment that American politics has become. I occasionally listen to NPR and I read Steady, the only account that gives me any Hope that our democracy can survive and continue to be “a rising Sun”. Thanks Dan.

This is a powerful read and affirms what I was letting myself start to feel. Just, some faint hope in a dark winter. Thank you.

President Biden's job performance is good.

Those who criticize him from the Republican side do nothing to work with the Democrats as the institution was set up to do. That is shameful.

And, the republican governors, politicians, and pundits blame the administration on the continued needless Covic-19 deaths, while not work toward urging their followers to get the vaccine and the booster are literally encouraging their followers to elect death and serious illness. That is shameful and criminal.

McConnell, and his bands of senators are abdicating their responsibility to do their job to play politics.

We must call them on these obstructive maneuvers and irresponsibility. Lead, follow or get out of the way. The founding fathers of this nation will not consider the Republicans have done anything good in the past 12 years.

“The tides of history are controlled, in large part, by us”, and it begins with each and every one of us. I read this entire essay, let it sit with me for a day, and then read it all over again. Many people see the details and get locked in by thinking only at that level. Those that can see the big picture, and additionally are able to communicate it to others, have a gift. Dan rather and his team have that gift. I always feel more informed after reading such an essay, and it does have a steady calming effect. Thank you for this.

Thank you for today’s email of optimism and hope. I so much look forward to reading these emails and appreciate your perspective on on events both current and past.

I wonder if any thought has been given to collecting these emails into a book for publication. I know that I would like to keep these “words of wisdom“ in more permanent form, and I suspect others feel the same.

Thank you for these positive thoughts. I’d add a fourth island of hope, the President’s Cancer Moonshot initiative. Advancements in detection, monitoring, and treatment will save lives. It’s so good to have a real President again, one who cares about the American people.

As always, written as only Mr. Rather can . My hope is that some of the outcome , you surmised, doesn't come to fruition.
