Ms. Hannah- Jones' eloquence defines excellent journalism and honest, fact-based reporting of what happened in this story. Fascinating reading and I commend her courage and persistence.
I thought I had read enough coverage in the news but your encouragement to read the full statement was good advice. I can't help but believe, reading her statement, that UNC has lost one of it's greatest opportunities to shine.
Thank you, Mr. Rather for publishing the full article. What an eye opener. It made me cry. In the 60’s I had real hope that racism would soon end. It’s so disheartening to see where our country is today. We could have and should have done better.
If not for the weight and depth of content and eloquence in writing, I would give up the tenuous faith I have in academic legacy. WMP and it’s entitlement persist in a sordid and inedible influence. Bless all who persist in truth and justice in the face of derelicts.
A sadly wonderfully and eloquently written piece about the underlying forces inherently attempting to control the prosperity and lives of others. As so clearly stated by Ms. Nikole Hannah-Jones, "For too long, powerful people have expected the people they have mistreated and marginalized to sacrifice themselves to make things whole". Yet it is filled with an underlying strength, determination and hope. Thank you, Dan, for drawing attention to Ms. Nikole Hannah-Jones' story. And thank you Ms. Nikole Hannah-Jones for setting an example of true integrity, strength, and leadership in living your life.
I have no idea if the WOW!!! WOW!!! mean anything to anyone, but this is the greatest #Steady writing of all time, to date!
Born and raised on a vegetable farm in Palm Beach County, Florida, my dad had crews almost daily working the fields. Everything that needed to be done, he had black crews doing it. He taught me then that if you treat people with respect, they'll respect you back. Very seldom did I ever hear him raise his voice to any of them. On holidays, he had the crews come to the farm, with their families, and we had a huge cookout where he would cook a hog, and a cow. The women prepared vegetables from the fields and we had a big, enjoyable time, together.
I grew up in the 50s, 60s, and 70s when the racial divide was just getting started in our schools. In my hometown in the late 60's while in high school, they closed the black high school west of our town, which was totally airconditioned, closed in, and about 30 years newer than our high school. Just because our school was all white, and the school board was all white, they closed that school, with better equipment, better equipped classrooms, probably a lot better teachers, and surely a lot better school learning environment, and bussed those kids to our school. No air conditioning, nothing. And, they wonder why their was so much hatred across this country.
This has been a long time coming, and I am so glad that it is here. Maybe this divide between white, black, Haitian, Latinos, Cuban, and all other races, genders, can all be subsided and people realize they are all as one. It will be nice to see w hat we, the people can accomplish if we all started working together toward one common goal. It's for sur e our Congress isn't going to do it for us, not until we get people there which want to work for the people instead of themselves, or for one particular past x-president, who did nothing but try to make this country an extension of Putin!
I am absolutely not surprised at any of this happening because the master plans were already in place 360 degrees to destroy this brilliants! Why should anyone be surprised that she had to defend herself in the depths that she has. It is shameful when we had during this same time an “Insurrection of Democracy 2021” that to this day had not gone through the strife as this black women. Each and everyday AmeriKkka shows us exactly who it is, each and everyday. Truth be told, each and every single day the destroyers are out to destroy. Follow the steps and whala! Smh “compelled”
As I read this compelling piece I am proud yet saddened that we are subjected to this treatment in every area of our careers as Black men and women. I have followed this story for obvious reasons. I am moved by the tenacity of the students more than any supporters. They stood up for what they believed and wouldn’t allow their professor to be mistreated and denied. I am personally experiencing a similar situation in my career. I am strengthened by her tenacity, confidence, and endurance. Her candor gives me the confidence to stand my ground and fight for my advancement and my correctional education students. The battle for equity is real and painful. Thank you Dan for sharing her piece.
Thank you for publishing this. I would not have seen it elsewhere. Thus the need for freedom of the press and equal treatment by the press of social justice issues.
What an amazing woman. I am transfixed reading her story. I am so moved by her work ethic and the incredible injustice she has faced. She has incredible determination to keep striving to make a difference no matter who gets in her way. Her parents would be proud of her. Thank you for sharing Steady team.
It is important to read every word of Nikole Hannah-Jones's article, and to applaud her decision to join Howard University, after having been so shabbily treated by her alma mater. Thank you, Dan, for alerting us. May your efforts and those of Nikole produce much needed change.

Thanks Dan! For letting others know…….

Oh my God. Thank you Dan Rather for this. Incredible words. I read it twice thru tears.
Powerful preface to a remarkable essay, thanks Dan
