I feel so sick to my stomach over this election I just can’t believe how many Americans are so ignorant of history. Trump unlike Hitler hasn’t spent anytime in prison but pretty much every thing else about them is not so different. Trump has no intention of ever holding another election should he win, God forbid. Too many Americans have no concept of the history of the Nazi regime and what is happening now. Trump is evil, there I said it. He’s always been a person who only cares about himself and has fooled the masses. The Republicans are happy to use him to get the power they lust for but if they think they can control him they are wrong.Trump is so very obviously ill, he is showing obvious signs of Dementia! My husband died of this dreadful disease and the thought that the party would foist a man on the country who is slowly unwinding with a brain disease is beyond comprehension! Both Trumps parents died of Alzheimer’s! Trump intends to be a dictator ! He wants to crush Social Security something the Right has been after since 1935! Why do they hate it? Well of course it helps people, we can’t have that can we? But seriously how can you trust a political party that willingly chooses a man who has a felony record and dementia as your presidential candidate? It’s Insane and evil

Thank you. Ever since I was a small child I would ask my mother was she sure Hitler was dead! She assured me he was! Little did I know there were people who admired him , why would I as a child? Trump terrifies me and the fact that he has so many followers shows that our schools have done a very very poor job teaching history of the 20th century. In fact I recall that we spent so much time on the early years of the American History that we barely reached the 1920’s ! I don’t know if they even teach 20th century history in high schools any more they call it Social Studies now! No wonder there is so much ignorance about the 1930’s and 40’s in America these days and people with a lack of education can easily be conned by a con artist like Trump! It’s time to take back our history lessons from Texas school book publishing companies that have vanished so much world and American history! This is the result! WWII was a Horror show and Trump will allow Putin to take Ukraine and most likely other former Eastern European countries that Putin thinks he’s entitled to because once Stalin had them! Please vote for Kamala and don’t let Comrade Trump do this!

Put Country before recipes and crossword puzzles!

I am not trying be clever, but I hear from people that those are the reasons they keep subscribing to the NYTimes. You've got to be kidding! The paper goes out of its way to normalize a convicted felon and wannabe dictator for president, putting the future of our democracy and Constitution in jeopardy, and you keep subscribing for the recipes and crossword puzzles? There are plenty of other great sources for those things.

So, put Country before recipes and crossword puzzles (and really slimy journalism) and cancel your subscription to the NYTimes! Boycott the NYTimes!

I cancelled my subscription to the NYT's and WaPo but online versions run to early 2025. IMO, far better education and truthful information comes from Dan Rather, Joyce Vance, Heather Cox Richardson, The Economist, BBC, NPR, MSNBC.

Excellent sources, Janet! And, as another reader noted, Robert Reich is another good addition. I also follow George Conway, Charlie Sykes and The Bullwark. What I appreciate about these sources is that they are former Republicans - people who consider themselves fundamentally conservative - who are calling out the insanity of the GOP. I’m hoping people who have always followed traditional conservative pundits are still paying attention to them.

George Conway started his PsychoPac to fund very targeted anti-Trump ads that are broadcast on Fox to Palm Beach, Florida (Mar-A-Lago)and Bedminster, NewJersey (Trump’s Bedminster Golf Club.) Conway’s goal is to upset Trump in a very specific way so that he his very limited ability to campaign and make any sense in his public speaking. I applaud Conway’s efforts which are made with the help of an experienced Psychologist who shares our feelings of revulsion and alarm about Trump’s sociopathy and malignant narcissistic personality disorder. The Bulwark is now run by Tim Miller and Sarah Longwell. Charlie Sykes retired. Tim does the Bulwark podcast, which is mostly very good. Sarah Longwell has a podcast with George Conway called “George Conway tells Sarah Longwell about the legal issues of the day.” The song that opens the pod is worth hearing, even if you skip the pod.

I'm hate to burst your bubble but it will not happen. The New York Times has an executive editor and a publisher who believe that democracy is not a form of government as defined by the likes of Britannica as " Democracy is a system of government in which power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly or through freely elected ..." The publisher, therefor also the editor believe democracy is political.

Joseph Kahn, editor of the New York Times, doesn't believe in democracy as a system of government, to him and his boss, it is a position of a political party. Think about that.

"It’s our job to cover the full range of issues that people have. At the moment, democracy is one of them. But it’s not the top one — immigration happens to be the top [of polls], and the economy and inflation is the second. Should we stop covering those things because they’re favorable to Trump and minimize them? I don’t even know how it’s supposed to work in the view of Dan Pfeiffer or the White House. We become an instrument of the Biden campaign?"

Dan Fromkin, in a Press Watch article broke this rather noxious paragraph down this way:

In one small paragraph, Kahn outdid himself. He:

Dismissed the importance of democracy as a political issue.

Disclosed that the Times coverage is poll driven.

Asserted that coverage of the economy and immigration is favorable to Trump.

Whined that more coverage of democracy was tantamount to becoming a partisan publication.

This is the New York Times' view. This regime is now driven by $ and clicks - one in the same, actually - and the polls. Even their "endorsement" of VP Harris was cringe worthy. It was filled with both sides isms. It came across as editorial cowardice.

No, the New York Times aka the Gray Lady, under Kahn and Dash? It has turned into the Tarnished Lady.

Expand full comment

Yes, they do not acknowledge the difference between a direct democracy and our representative democracy. Kahn also said at one point they used POLLING to decide what to cover. Democracy wasn’t the top issue.

This is an asinine argument. First of all the media is guaranteed protection in the Constitution so it can inform the public & help protect our country and rights. (If us little people lose our rights they will lose theirs.) Secondly, if NYT and others don’t cover something it isn’t going to percolate to the top of the polls. Third, is Kahn makes excuses that are at best misleading. For instance, implying NYT’s choice is to cover democracy OR mmigration.

Is NYT incapable of reporting on more than one major domestic issue? He presents a false choice as though we are too simple to recognize it.

Kahn in an interview with Ben Smith at Semafor —

— It’s our job to cover the full range of issues that people have. At the moment, democracy is one of them. But it’s not the top one — immigration happens to be the top [of polls], and the economy and inflation is the second. Should we stop covering those things because they’re favorable to Trump and minimize them? —

Covering issues favorable to trump is impartial but covering unfavorable issues abandons impartiality?

“Above the fold” will soon go the way of “hang up the phone”. Fewer every year & now only 4% of people prefer to read a print publication versus 58% on digital devices.

Not me. Not ever. But I read the NYT on line because a print subscription is too much money for me. As a former reporter, I love everything about a newspaper, including the fold, the ink on your fingertips and the smell of it all.

I gave up reading the print newspapers years ago. Partly because we never knew where it landed. Then the local paper went to recycled paper and a different ink(?). At any rate, it made me sneeze and hack. Besides features like bookmarking and searching the text for keywords were too handy to give up.

What I really dislike is too many use algorithms “based on your interests” to determine what you see. I just want to see the news and I’ll decide what my ‘interests’ are.

My husband collects old newspapers (1700’s onward). Part of the appeal is “touching” history by turning the pages of the paper (earliest were only a page or two and made from rags) as well as reading the “news of the day” before it became history.

I like both I still liked getting my local paper because I have fireplaces and newspapers come in very handy when cold weather comes along and you need it for your wood stove or fireplace. I hate to see these large Newspapers go so right wing, guess they will pay for that in a big way eventually at least I hope so.

"Above the fold" also means, on a website, "At the top of the page; visible without scrolling down." Lots of figures of speech continue to be used outside their original contexts. I see your point. Maybe it will survive but I’m inclined to think not. It’s losing its meaning which is location of import news on a page. Nothing of national, state or local importance.

Maybe it will mean “the stuff you like important or not”

It's a very good question. The correct answer would get Harris elected in a landslide. Trump is demented, Vance is mad, together they will make things even worse for poor, white, Americans, yet the MAGA crowd love them. Hint, we must have a serious discussion about the conflicting metaphysical world views of religion and science. Another hint, most of the white men who demeaned women and discriminated against blacks are now dead. The rules have changed, and while it's OK to demand, hell insist, on change perhaps we should stop billing MAGA for the sins of their fathers. Finally when you ask someone to vote for Harris because she's a qualified American, you ask them to vote for someone of their own tribe. When you ask men to vote for Harris because she's an American woman, the first woman President, you ask them to vote for someone from another tribe - a tribe that appears to hate MAGA men.

There's a disconnect between who they think they're voting for and the real Donald Trump. Fox news plus an army of other news channels and internet influencers that take everything Trump says and does and tell people what to think about it, how to react to it, and how to feel about it. A continuation of the image of Trump created by The Apprentice. It's like they're trying to prove they can sell an air conditioner to an Eskimo, or that they can truly put lipstick on a pig and sell it as the most beautiful model you've ever seen.

When I watched the TV media coverage of Trump and the Mrs. descending the golden escalator in Trump Tower on June 16, 2015, I wanted to vomit. Trump said the coverage was like the Academy Awards, and it was. His ascent from on high played well to the Tea Party/evangelical crowd whose religious leaders were already preaching from their pulpits that Trump was sent by God to put religion into government. The media that day covered the ascent from on high because it would sell, not because it was integral to his announcement that he would be running for the Office of President. Turning the cameras on when he reached the podium would have sufficed, should have sufficed.

Watching that mob invade a sacred space, watching Capitol Police be pummelled, twisted my heart and my stomach. We cannot forget, or minimize that day. That was a near a treasonous (yes, I dare to use that word) coup as had ever happened in my long life. And the now disbarred attorneys attempting to convince judges to literally overturn an election, based solely on lies, and got door after door slammed in their faces.

And of course,The Call to Georgia's Secretary of State, asking this public official to"find"(out of literally thin air)enough votes to"help him win".That should have been enough to get him jailed on the spot,if you ask me.How the hell is an act like that"Official"??

Tfg showed his true colors when he put people up to this shit, and then refused to stop it.That he actually sanctioned seeing his own vice president potentially killed by this treasonous mob, should still tell everyone how truly unqualified he is as a candidate for any office.

I will NEVER FORGET!!!!!Neither should any of us who care about our country! This Sore Loser needs to go the hell away and stay away!

I am in hopes that steps are quietly being taken to stop dead in its tracks, any and all dirty tricks tfg might be planning.I personally would love to see anything they try,to meet a wall of resistance they can't bully and they are the ones forced into submission. And if any type of crap like this remotely tries to happen, tfg the Sore Loser needs to be arrested and hauled in front of a judge! We will ALL know he would be behind it!

Jack Smith needs to keep fighting for this to finally get done,to convict tfg of this wrongdoing.Tfg needs to be taught a lesson he will never forget.

Then, and only then, can we finally move forward, and make sure this can't happen again.

December 7th has always been called the day of infamy, when the United States at Pearl Harbor on the island of Oahu was attacked by the Japanese. But the United States was attacked a total of 3 times: the first was on August 24, 1814 when the British army burned Washington DC during the War of 1812; the second was of course Pearl Harbor; and the third was September 11, 2001. But there was one more time and that was the most infamous of them all because it wasn't another country that attacked us but our own citizens urged on by a rabid narcissist who's only thought was that he had to fight like hell to keep his power. Not too long ago, the former governor of Wisconsin, Scott Walker, said in words to the effect that most Americans are over January 6th. I strongly disagree. We should never get over it, we should never forget it because if those rioters succeeded in stopping the official counting of the electoral ballots, the United States of America would, for all intent and purposes, have ended. No one, except may American History teachers, remembers August 24, 1814. All of us remember December 7th as it is clearly marked on our calendars as Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, and September 11th, now called Patriots Day, is remembered by the solemn ringing of the Fireman's Bell at Ground Zero and Shenksville. But what do we call January 6th? I don't know, but it should always be remembered for what we almost lost, because we had to fight like hell to keep it. And now we have to do it again...vote like hell.

It's getting close enough to the end that the polls aren't likely to change very much, and the final poll is the one that counts -- the votes that we cast at this very important election.

You are right about the polls but I think we still have time to change people's minds from undecided to Harris and all I know is I'm doing all I can to do that. Sadly for me all I can do is donate and not very much but for me it's a lot. I live in an area where it is unsafe to let people you know you do not support trump, both because of threats to the well being of your farm and because local folks you rely on to care for your animals or even yourself can suddenly find that the are just too busy to see you. My phone is not reliable and often has a poor connection and my arthritis makes my handwriting not very readable. But my credit is good, and I am donating all I can!

Dan, quite an article. Ever so accurate, as always. Some of us remember the day vividly. But I’m sure the MAGA group and some of its fringes don’t. Or maybe they don’t care, which is probably worse. I guess to many people the price of a dozen eggs is more important. ( do they not realize there’s an avian flu that’s been going around for 3 years that’s killing chickens….supply and demand…economics 101). I just wish the media would be as forceful in condemning Trump as you are. And other Republicans should be loud and pointed as well. And the psychiatric profession should say blankety he is DEMENTED and UNFIT. We only have 33 days so please, everyone, speak up. And don’t tone down the rhetoric.

And am raising a glass and toasting Jack Smith for his perseverance. The man is a trooper and wants to win. Quitters don’t win and winners don’t quit. Keep going Jack Smith; you can do it.

Shana Tova to all who are observing the Jewish New Year! 5785; that’s a long long time. Let’s hope this upcoming trip around the sun is a very good one. One without DT.

What I want to know is:

• Just how much are they willing to give up for less expensive eggs & gas?

• Will it be like ‘infrastructure week’ and the ‘plan to improve the ACA’, minus our freedom?

Ummmmm, I live in a blue state, a very blue state and I can pay $5 a dozen for fresh eggs and under $4 a gallon. The question is: How long are gougers going to be allowed to gouge? And how long are rapacious grocery chains going to be allowed to drive out smaller chains? The turgid turd lies, and the slick OSU grad does too. But, they are great at smoke and mirrors.

OK, I live in a very very red state. We pay less than $4 dz for extra large eggs & about the same as you for gasoline.

My question is: How much will people give up to get cheaper eggs & gas?

I’m don’t see the sense of electing a dictator because prices are too high. The ROI doesn’t look so good to me.

In our state you can file a complaint with the AG’s office. Odds are nothing will come of it. The governor can issue an Executive Order during a state of emergency to activate a specific price gouging statute.

I’d guess politicians have a hard time defining price gouging versus supply & demand. It’s tricky territory. Then there are the lobbyists who lobby, donate & have 0 interest in dialing back profits so nothing happens.

Harris has proposed that Congress pass federal price gouging legislation. The GOP called it price fixing. Truth be told, presidents don’t control prices. They can implement good policies if they have the support.

Absolutely, and prices of eggs and a loaf of bread or gas always changes and are determined by the market place. President’s term is always caught in favorable and unfavorable economic cycle’s. A lot of factors are beyond control. Covid, a world wide phenomenon messed up supply chain. I remember having to wait 13 months for a piece of metal on 4 wheels called a ‘ car’. Why is Trump getting credit for economy. What did he do ? Mismanaged covid, as a result a million people died in USA, that’s not a joke, in supposed to be the most powerful country in the world. He declared bankruptcies a number of times, besides being morally bankrupt too.

Unfortunately Trumps voters have no idea what a shallow person he is, they only admire him for his so called wealth and his hatred of Mexicans and Blacks. It’s sick. Do they even realize that Mexicans were living here well before any White men stepped ashore? This is not a White only country! That’s ridiculous and a lie!
