Thank you Dan, excellent choice. The music is uplifting and the body just wants to get up and dance. But the words are powerful. If we hold steady, we will survive.

Of course, we will. I definitely agree!

Dan, I am trying my best to “stay steady”. But I worry a lot about world events and the Second Coming. Peter , New York

Thanks Dan. This song was my anthem that got me through chemo and stem cell transplant in 2008 and I’m still surviving. We cannot give up. We’ll get through this.

Music touched something deep inside and gives us strength and courage. Music got me through a double mastectomy and chemo 9 years ago, a different song but it still gives me strength today.

PERFECT!

“If I had thought for one second you’d be back to bother me, So now go! Walk out that door. You’re not welcome anymore. Did you think I would crumble. Did you think Id lay down and die. I WILL SURVIVE!

DJT you have underestimated us!

That song gave me inspiration and courage to know that I can take care of myself and my children when I finally had enough sense and finances to divorce my husband. It took me 25 years but I made it! I felt so free and capable to manage on my own. I was finally making a living wage. It took me that long. This is just one more reason why all of us need to be able to make a living wage. Regarding our political situation, I can only hope that we can learn, grow, and change to understand what is truly important and has value in life.

WOW you have a great testimonial. You remind me of my mother’s situation. She was left to care for 3 children, without a husband and she survived to raise 3 great kids. She died about 10 yrs ago, passed in her sleep. She was living with my husband and I at the time. And yes although it was hard when she left, I did survive, because she did. 🥰

Your mother had it a lot harder than me. I waited for 25 years. My “children” were college age. I had a job that paid me enough to support myself and my children. Trying to support yourself with young children without help from your family is tough. I commend your mom for doing what she had to do to make a better life for her children.

Great choice! And we will survive! And when we come thru on the other side we will be stronger. DJT needs to answer for his actions. I don’t care how many of his crazed followers immolate themselves. Nor do I care if he falls asleep and is flatulent at the defense table. I care that the Rule of Law is on display in the NY court room. Yes, the high and mighty must answer for their crimes just like everyone else. It’s time.

Back in the late 60s/early 70s when I think a lot more of us were wide eyed optimists and believed that we could do a lot of good, I had a close friend who started law school. In my senior year of college I was recruited by a few law schools but during that year he dropped out of law school in his third year. When asked why he said because there was no relationship between the law and justice. Well that really stuck with me and I choose to not go to law school (went to grad school for criminal justice). I still believe that, that there is no relationship between justice and the law BUT in this case as faulty as the law might be, we are seeing it be applied in the manner it was intended to be. Or at least I hope we are. I still want to see genuine consequences. In this case perhaps there will be a relationship between the law and justice.

I believe there is a relationship between the law and justice. It is not always a straight line. To the extent it does not deliver justice it reflects our own flaws.

We can survive, but can our democracy survive Trump? Hopefully.

Expand full comment

Roger, our democracy can survive and hopefully improve so that people will no longer be influenced by the Trump mentality if we all vote for Biden and the Democrats. Laws can be put in place to prevent wealthy individuals from taking control over American lives. I believe a wealth tax would help. When us humans learn to value each other we can overcome hate, individualism, power, and control. When we think of ourselves as a community that must help each other through the ups and downs of life, we will survive.

I take your point. You’ve applied the meaning literally. The song is about rising; living without fear and control from this other person. Democracy provides our path to showing DJT the door — and changing the locks.

We can’t say everyone will survive a DJT administration. The DJT target list says some would survive only if they flee. The rest of us could not count on surviving with our lives intact and circumstances intact or be free of fear.

Roger,

Watch Ken Burns, The Roosevelts, an intimate story. PBS

We cannot let the bully in the room intimidate us. My goodness, these sapiens who think because they are tough and mean and evil will win over all the rest of us will only get meaner and more evil the more we pay attention to them. Drop them like a bad disease. These strange animals need to believe they are above. That is because they have nothing .

We have the power to ignore and to hold accountable those whose behavior is unacceptable! Haven’t many of you been parents?

Too bad we can’t send Trump to his room. But a jury can and hopefully will.

His dad sent him to military school and it didn't help. I like the analogy though, given his Toddler Tactics. I want to see him behind bars, for a good long time. Not even that will change him, but at least we won't have to worry about him anymore, unless of course he wins the election. Therein lies the rub!

Yes, it can and it will - because it has to.

Thank you, Dan, for this wonderful anthem for today. And I keep remembering your previous sharing when you were told to “stay steady, Danny” which warmed the cockles of my heart.

A great song to be stuck in your head!!! And for me it's a good reminder that 50 years ago in some ways seems like yesterday...can it really have been 50 years? And another reminder that often progress is slow, and hopefully mostly steady. Today we are witnessing brave women who have in fact survived and have had the courage to come forward and say pretty awful things about the former president of the United States. They are doing this because they are more than 50% sure that they will be believed. I believe when I Will Survive came out almost no women would have been believed or taken seriously. And now, brave women who have in fact survived may be responsible for the fall of the biggest threat to democracy that America has ever seen. I am almost to the point of believing that if Trump wins in November it will not be the end of democracy because women will insist on surviving and surviving in a manner that they deserve, not as hand maidens. It may take another 50 years but I am starting to think maybe we will survive. I do think that if women banded together and quit having sex with men and quit going to work until they are treated like full class citizens with rights to their own bodies and rights to not be sexually abused and rights to be believed. I'm not sure which would impel men more to make changes...the lack of sex or the tremendous drop in standard of living (according to the PEW research folks, only about 25% of families have only a husband who is employed, the other 75% would see a big change in their standard of living if their wife quit working). And of course our economy would fall apart as women make up over 50% of the worker force..take these folks out of the work force and the migrants, documented and undocumented and boy would things fall apart! And while surviving is not the same as having all our scars healed or being the same person you were before, sometimes just having the courage to believe you will survive, you will get through this can be very powerful and healing. I also think probably many of us need to change the words just a bit to I HAVE survived. Despite suffering various forms and degrees of abuse we have survived and done good things and we need to take a moment or two to remind ourselves of that.
