Barbara Jo Krieger is the most elusive of nits. Adept at defending the indefensible nothing that is the Democratic (corporate) Party of today. Excuses... excuses... excuses, shall we hear from her.

Insatiably hungry for power and praise, President Trump was dealt a crushing ego blow in the 2020 election. Unable to prove voter fraud, he turned to his fan base for support. They had been assured for four years that they were America's "true patriots," wronged by liberal enemies who were out to destroy the country. All it took was a little encouragement for them to conduct an assault on the U.S. Capitol building - the very seat of American democracy. These people who once shouted "back the blue" and "stand for the flag" attacked the Capitol police and used that same flag as a weapon. Ignoring his own staff's calls to stop the violence, Trump assured the rioters that they were loved.

This insurrection should have outraged both sides of the political fence. Instead, more than a year later, right-wing pundits tried to downplay the violence. Some even hinted that it was a liberal plot. And Trump emerged as a leading candidate for the 2024 ballot. This, more than anything, proves that America may be fractured beyond repair.

Jan 6th is the result of a 50 year Republican effort to destroy constitutional government in this nation for the sake of their own power. Race, religion, sedition, armed rebellion, but, above all, lies, are their methods.

Jan 6th is an emergency flare, sent up to warn anyone anywhere in the world who hasn't noticed, that we are a failed nation. Time to dump our nukes in the ocean, before Ron DeSantis gets hold of them.

Starting with the Brown v. Board case, politics started to matter to a sizable faction of our 'white' population, nearly all of whom prize their 'whiteness' above anything and everything else.

As long as political aspirants and officeholders were all, or nearly all, middle-aged pale males (like you and I, Dan) politics didn't matter too much to this cohort and democracy was OK with them--but only within that context! As more and more women of all colors and men of duskier hues ran for office--and worse, for this crowd--actually won, their commitment to democracy became more and more strained. When Barack Obama won election in '08 and was re-elected in '12, I suggest their commitment to democracy snapped. And by now, party shifts had made them the base of the 'Republican' party. Trump is a specimen of LBJ's 'lowest white man' apropos of what he said to Bill Moyers in 1964. In 2020, the votes of African-Americans, Latinos, AAPIs and Native Americans booted him from office. The treason of January 6 is the boiling over of their hatred for anyone not a pale male having any political or economic power! And this pale male is so DONE giving these renegadoes (to use Shakespeare's form of that word) ANY benefit of ANY doubt I have no words for it!

And again: since they are now the base of the GOP, that party is now anti-democracy as well and deserves to be treated as a treasonous FASCIST cabal!!!

We all reach our set of beliefs through listening to and accepting or rejecting news and opinion brought to us by friends, relatives, the news, books and a variety of other sources. Those purveyors of "truth" become our "authority". We believe because we trust the source. The January 6 insurrection happened, in part, because folks in authority created and continue to spread lies and false and misleading narratives. Those insurrectionists were incited and encouraged to storm the capital by President Trump and others in positions of power; folks that normally we would accept as honest. Are there truth tellers out there that these folks will come to trust?

President Trump lost the election, but claimed he’d won. Courts rejected his “stolen election” claim 60 times. He held a rally on the Mall for his supporters, then urged them to go to the Capitol and stop Congress from certifying the election. The crowd followed his direction, attacked the Capitol, killed one police officer, injured more than 100, and seriously damaged the building. This did not start the divisions in America but symbolizes their magnitude.

A disparate group of American citizens -- having willfully, almost eagerly, allowed themselves to be deceived by Donald Trump about the outcome of the 2020 presidential election -- and having convinced themselves that they were American patriots -- decided to overturn, violently if necessary, what they willfully permitted themselves to believe was a stolen election. They did so by violently storming the Capitol, hoping to interrupt the Constitutional procedure to confirm Mr. Biden as president.

For me as one in his 7th decade of life it’s simple. 1/6/2020 Democracy died and the autopsy was completed on 1/6/2021 when not a SINGLE REPUBLICAN showed up to honor the 5 dead Capitol officers and 140+ injured during the attempted and successful demolition of democracy led by TFG and his entourage of complicit members of his party and Justice Thomas’s wife who funded and encouraged the overthrow of democracy. It’s over folks. I can’t mask my anger nor find any hope. Putin might even be better at least he’s honest. Genocide is his answer and democracy is his target. His mole got the work done.

Good Bye America it did last 200+ years.

This is what I saw: People who I might have regarded beforehand as decent, if uninformed and easily manipulated, were casting their fates to the wind-and all because a grifter had bamboozled them for four years, was still conniving and is lying to himself and everyone else who will listen, to this very day. I see the mass media telling people: "None of what happened matters all that much; you all WILL vote Republican this November-because we say so." I see a skittish Department of Justice, slowly trying to find its way, perhaps worried that a revanchist administration, come 2025, will extract its revenge against even the most trivial of indictments and guilty verdicts, stemming from the events of 1/6/21. I see those of us who want justice having to wait, perhaps beyond our lives here on Earth, for its majesty to be unfurled.

On 6 January 2021, an insurrection took place at the Capital. Hundreds of men and women, intent on disrupting the peaceful change of power, stormed the building, broke in, and terrorized members of Congress. The insurrection occurred in response to the lying rants of a sitting president and his enablers, including members of Congress. The former president continues to spread lies about the election and enacts revenge on anyone who fails to support him. He has co-opted the party of Lincoln, recreating conservatism in his image and extracting the worst of bigotry, racism, sexism, and patriarchy from millions of US citizens.

I considered myself a Republican when I voted for President Clinton. By the time I had voted for President Obama, family members thought I was a “liberal nut.” When it came time to choose between HRC and that Trump guy, it was an easy choice. But, now I really didn’t have anything in common with the GOP. Or, the GOP didn’t have anything in common with me. 1/6/21 was started long before the 2020 election.

On January 6th, 2021, an organized act of treasonous aggression was directed at our Nation’s Capitol, as members of Congress were gathered to certify the election results of Joe Biden, elected 46th President of these United States of America by a legitimate democratic process. Insurrectionists were prompted by the lie of the previous 45th President, that the election was fraudulent. Congress members were terrorized, police murdered, and the most honored building of our republic desecrated.

We hung our hopes on a vast new land and created movement with “united we stand”

Democracy birthed is a fragile state

Division occurs in deep seated hate

Its longing for power was the real disguise

As Trumpers sold their endless lies

Stop the steal was being sung

As the world watched democracy being hung.
