Thank you for this interlude of gratitude to Paul Farmer. Airing this was a good decision. I am so sad that he has died. Based on Mountains Beyond Mountains, I'm sure he had a very long yet-to-do list. What an inspiration he is.

Our world needs more people like Dr. Farmer. His dedication to those who needed his help, stands in bright comparison to those who worship money and power.

Thank you, Dan and Elliot, for this thoughtful obituary that both honors Dr Farmer and educates your readers about a person who modeled the very best in humans who "show up."

I’m in tears reading this Mr Rather. I’ve read many of Dr Farmer’s obituary comments and have read through other articles about this incredible human being. As a Registered Nurse, I’ve been in healthcare since 1978, I’ve seen the good, the bad and ugly, but have always, in my heart marched through with optimism and hope…I am so inspired by Dr Farmer’s dedication and compassion that came from his heart. Dr Farmer was extraordinary and taken from us way too soon. Sincere condolences to his family, his friends and colleagues and the community he served so humbly…rest in peace kind heart, you will not be forgotten 🕊🙏🏻

Ultimately, he was a person of action. It seems his mantra was not to merely do the most with what he had, but to simply do what's needed and the funding must match that need. It seems we can do that for the military industrial complex that is expert at taking lives, but not for the people and programs that can save lives.

“Cynicism is a dead end.” Dr. Paul Farmer

How wonderful that he refused to be dragged down dead end paths. May we follow his lead.

The saddest part of this is I had never heard of this great human being until he passed and this goes for most. I spent an hour engrossed in his life and was blown away by it.We all know about trump, putin, saudi arabia because it’s what most news is about( if no mass murders that day) , sound bytes about nothing new, especially something to lighten the day. I don’t blame the press for my ignorance about this unbelievable man but do blame them for ignoring him and his work, his work wasn’t in line with the greed of American medicine, so ignored it seems. This fragile planet cannot afford the loss of people like Dr. Farmer, him and others like him make us all want and strife to be better. This man I never heard of until yesterday will now be part of my conscience, thanks.

It is wondrous what one person can do when so determined to help others.

He had a wife and family he leaves behind. I am sure they are proud of him, but the grief must be awful. At 62, he had a lot of life he could have lived. Very sad.

Hopefully there are others who will keep up his efforts.

It saddens me I was not aware of this man until he died. Our media failed. I failed. I will try to do better. Thank you, Dan.
