I am so in awe of this amazing beautiful woman; such astounding courage. So inspiring to read about her. Finally, people like her are being duly recognized. God bless all those who suffered and continue to suffer, as a result of slavery. Pretty amazing - and quite distressing that there was so much we were not taught in school about this dark part of American history...

The native Americans will be among the happiest to see Jackson’s face off the $20 for what he did to them. His disarming and return of the free black former French soldiers to the tender mercies of the Southerners after the Battle of New Orleans alone is enough to not put him on our money, says this descendant of a veteran of that battle.

Amen. This may not seem like that big of a deal, but it is, and not just for historical reasons. Roman silver coins, originally made in the temple of the goddess Juno Moneta who gave her name (money, mint) and her likeness to it, has a sacred aspect to it. Also an alchemical one, because it can be transformed into nearly anything. We forget both of these things to our detriment. Harriet Tubman’s portrait will truly grace our currency, and perhaps even our national character in some way.

Amen. Last night I watched a documentary about Percy Lavon Julian, one of the first African Americans to earn a doctorate in chemistry, and only because the Austrians allowed him to attend university there. I had never heard about this brilliant man before.

Trump set it back til 2028!! That again showed his contempt for black people. It's high time the nation does this.

It has taken us awhile, but I think Trump and his allies have given us a gift. A mirror that reflects our pass, hateful Americans to give us another glimpse of what it was and could be again, and a desire to change the paradigm. We are a good people and we can show the world we can walk or talk. Let us continue that journey to a more perfect Union.

hello Dan, Jackson was heroic in defeating the Brits in battle of New Orleans but his part in the forceful removal of the Cherokees & in particular the address he gave to Congress was simply abhorrent & morally, spiritually despicable!

I remember when Roots (Alex Haley)came out as a mini series back in the late 70's. I think I was around 6 years old. Our family of 3 sat down every night to watch it. I remember being appalled at how these people were being treated. It hurt my heart that one person would do such vile things to another. That's a lot to take in at 6 years old but it made a lasting impression on me. We also watched the sequel a couple of years later. Lots of my classmates also watched them. Back then, living in a rural area of the south, lots of us only had 3-4 channels to choose from and most of the time we watched whatever the parents chose to watch because most families only had one tv. But I think those 2 mini series did something for those of us still so young and impressionable. It showed us how we shouldn't be and that we needed to do better. All these years later, WE STILL NEED TO DO BETTER. There is so much more we have to accomplish to have true equality for all. When my children were old enough, I rented Roots and had my children watch it (I will also sit my grandchildren down to watch it when they are old enough). I felt it was something they needed to see. I wish everyone in today's world would also make their children watch it. I don't think just learning about slavery in school really works. It's just something that happened hundreds of years ago to them. They don't get the full impact of how bad it really was. I know that only living through it could truly show the absolute impact but at least by watching Roots they see what happened. There is a visual to it that brings it closer to home so to speak. They can put faces with names so it makes it much more real. Maybe when the schools teach about slavery, they should be allowed to have the kids watch Roots. I believe it's an invaluable piece of cinematography that could help bring along racial equality far more than just reading a chapter or two in a history book.

Beautifully stated! It's so important for women, especially young women, to see heroes that look like them. And our country/world needs to do this more. As a History teacher and then a principal I noticed how much study is devoted to male endeavors. We say Founding Fathers, but really, women were involved and active a much as they could be at the time. It's way past time to stop using words like "man" to mean everyone.
