I had just graduated from high school a month before and was working in my family’s seafood restaurant. The tv was on in the bar and everyone crowded around to watch. Customers left their meals to watch, the cooks in the kitchen crowded around a radio. It was such an awesome incredible accomplishment and we all watched that first step. I still get chills looking at that picture Dan. Thanks for the memories that are so much better than what we’re living through now.

In 1960, Peggy Lee released the song on her album then made it more popular when she performed it on national television. As the song’s popularity increased, it became better known as “Fly Me to the Moon” and in 1963 Peggy Lee convinced its composer to make the name change official. Thanks Dan for the memory that the song was the Apollo 11 missions theme song and for including Diana Krall’s rendition of the song, a popular jazz standard showcasing her smooth vocal style and piano skills. It certainly was “A Reason To Smile”.
Here is what amazes me about the 1969 moon landing. It was just a mere 66 years
earlier--1903--when the Wright Brothers made their historic flight at Kitty Hawk, NC. There is a plaque in the lobby of the Wright Brothers' museum in Kitty Hawk with a tiny piece of canvas, about the size of my thumbnail, and a handwritten note from Apollo Mission Commander Neil Armstrong, explaining that the canvas was from the Wright Brothers' historic flight, and Armstrong carried it with him to the moon. Quite an accomplishment in just 66 years!
Thank you for bringing back amazing memories, Dan Rather. I remember I was 13 and my father drove me to the United States Information Services premises in New Delhi, India. I saw a replica of the Apollo 11 there.
Of course things have drastically changed since. No USIS office anymore, thanks to you know who !
