Enough About Me, Let's Hear from You...

Front Standard. Beaches [Special Edition] [DVD] [1988].

In the 1988 movie, “Beaches,” Bette Midler has a great line that sums up the height of self-absorption: “But enough about me, let's talk about you.... what do you think of me?"

Now I know current and former television news anchors probably have a well-earned (and undoubtedly in the case of yours truly) a well-deserved reputation for, well, let’s just leave it at a lack of humility. But I can honesty say that my hope in creating STEADY was to have the exact opposite effect. I want to hear what you think of you, and your fellow citizens, and your country (wherever that may be), and your world. Your hopes, fears, and ruminations. The world can be chaotic and loud. I want these discussion forums to carve out a different tone and pace. Leave the trolls to social media.

Even in the comments I’ve seen so far on our posts I have been impressed. But not surprised. I like to think we’re building a pretty special community. Together.

Some ground rules for these Wednesday chats (and also the comments sections on other posts):

  • I want a space where people feel safe to express their views, as long as they are offered in good faith.

  • I want a space where ideas can be challenged, especially my own.

  • I want debate. But I want it to be civil.

  • I want people to come here with open minds, and open hearts.

  • I want this to be fun as well as serious.

We can agree to disagree without being disagreeable.

So today’s question is: What story or stories is the press not giving enough attention? I know it’s a long list. Curious to hear where you stand and what you think of the ideas of others.
