It has frustrated me since the Fairness Doctrine was repealed that news shows book people whom they know are peddling lies and the so-called journalists are too cowardly to confront them with real questions and keep on asking those questions until they get an answer. What I see are soft-ball questions and no follow-thru when the question gets side-stepped or a lie is promoted.

I love those questions you posed but I don't know of any journalist who is willing to ask them and stay with it for a real answer. I'm old enough to remember you, Huntley - Brinkley, Chronkite and even Edward R Murrow delivering the news in a measured, informed, and mostly neutral way (well *way* more neutral than now). Interviews were informed questions and letting a politician out of an uncomfortable situation was not done. I felt like I could trust what was coming from you all. I've found no one who is that informed and fearless these days except Rachel Maddow. I wish some conservatives would have the guts to go on her show. I don't think they like the idea of being interviewed by someone who earned her doctorate in political science at Oxford University, which she attended on a Rhodes Scholarship, not to mention that she's a woman. Educated, informed women tend to make conservatives uncomfortable (big generalization but true enough of so many that one is able to generalize).

Given the polarization of our country right now there really are no journalists without a political bent to their reporting. You have to watch both sides to see what is going on and even then it's tough to discern the truth. I look for people with an understanding of history as well as current events. History often can inform us of what to look for now.

I ask myself if we will ever have the kind of reporting that I grew up with. It's a lot easier to control lies and misinformation when you only have 3 channels and a limited number of journalists willing to dig deep. I don't know how we get there again with so many outlets allowing lies and misinformation to proliferate. It's a real conundrum.

I'm glad we still have you!

Excellent article, as always. I believe the answer to your question is, no. I have taken the path of watching what people do. Words are meaningless without action to follow them up. The press plays a big part in this. They are so anxious for ratings, clicks on social media and riling people up, that they don't care about facts anymore. A few Sundays ago, Republicans were on every news show spreading the big lie. For me, that should have been the end of the interview. The microphone should be cut off, and the reporter should tell audience why. But, they don't. The media also helped get 45 into office in the first place. No matter how many lies he told, he went mostly unchallenged. But, her emails..... False equivalency has become the hallmark of our media and we've seen how that's worked out. Journalists and reporters need to become tough in beating back a lie and refusing to have liars on their shows. They need to stop being afraid of a mean tweet from someone. Heads of networks need to demand excellence from their reporters instead of fireworks and "heated debate", that in reality can't happen when one side is lying about everything, including who the President is. When news became a ratings game, credibility was lost. Everyone wants to be first, even at the expense of the truth. Like you mentioned, once the lie is out there, discrediting it doesn't always work. The lie is in big bold headlines, the retraction, well that's on page 12. Journalist have a greater responsibility now more than ever, and so far, I'd give them a C. They need to do better. Our democracy depends on it.
