My mother told me when I was around 10, that this was the song she wanted played at her funeral. I didn't forget; she died suddenly and unexpectedly when I was 37. We wept through it, listening and remembering her. And then it was followed by her other favorite song -- 500 Miles by the Proclaimers. The laughter that erupted after the opening chords was cathartic, and we sang and wept and laughed.

On a new subject, even the generals are speaking out about the dangers to our democracy. I sure hope we can come together as one nation, as our forefathers planned. Divisiveness makes us vulnerable to those who would like to see our system of government fail…@

I was 24 when I worked on the McGovern campaign We knew these forces were festering in our country We lived through the revelations of Watergate, the resignation

of Richard Nixon We thought we could go about our lives and we did We had many distractions, some joyful, some tragic, but I never dreamed in my 70’s I would be more worried about my family, my freedom, my country than I am today If this cabal gets away with sedition, our babies, our children, our grand-children, our great-grand-children will not know the freedom that I enjoyed 50 years ago

The Steady team, I find lately is my Bridge Over Troubled Water. Honestly, and this likely has been said already here but I don't honestly think I could have made it though these last months without your sound reasoning and soothing words. Thank you for this song reminder, it brought back so many memories. I heard it played in church during communion. I heard it played at funerals and weddings in those days.

How I wish we could have this kind of music once again.

small revival of hope. Much needed in these troubled times. Take good care, Dan - these Saturday missives are a balm.

I loved this song decades ago when our country was in turmoil and feel the message even more now. I just heard a new version of it by a British vocal group called Collabro. I'm attaching a link. It can be downloaded now. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gy2slHxtXcY

Last week I sent an email to a close friend in the U.K. I correspond with regularly including Bob Dylan's lyrics to the song "Times they are a changing". I thought it an appropriate song for now, though released in 1964.

Coincidentally, I received my weekly newsletter from you this week and you chose to use the lyrics to A Bridge Over Troubled Waters" as "a metaphor for our times", which was released in 1970. I graduated from college in 1970 and my graduation ceremony was interrupting by protests and never concluded...

And now in 2022 all these lyrics of the 60's and early 70's still ring true.

Things change, and yet, they don't change. Hoping we can return to some semblance of peaceful times in the not too distant future.

Only joy reading about one of the most iconic songs of my lifetime. The memories invoked are of a young teen, growing with a love of music, singing along with Art. The lyrics were hopeful, even to a child of 13. Who could have known the significance of those lyrics 50+ years later. Thank you Dan and Elliot; the video of the creation of “A Bridge Over Troubled Water” was intriguing and sometimes funny, “A Pitcher of Cool Water”? Memory lane is a lovely place to visit.

Smile…sob…remember…all of the above.

My favorite duo and one of my top 5 favorite albums. I had never seen the discussion of the song’s creation so that was a joy in itself. Thanks for bringing me back to that time.

Simon’s words and melody, Garfunkel’s sweet and tender voice, brought thousands to Central Park. To us, this song embodies everything we have been through these past few years. Thank you.

Thank you for a heartwarming piece. I bought all their albums the moment they became available. I've since replaced them with CDs,which I still love and listen to regularly. I've also created my own "Simon & Garfunkel" Pandora station.l I'm 79.
