I loved this the first time I saw it and even more the following too many to count times! Aretha "the" Queen of soul always and one of my very favorites!
I have always loved this clip. I saw her perform this live during the Grammy's performance that year. It brought me to tears that night and every time I rewatch it, because it reminds me of how God touches us through the gifts of others to move our spirit and gives me an appreciation for humanity!
I am sure, these two do weekly concerts in Heaven❣️🎶🎵🎶 Pavarotti and Aretha have that vocal magic, their presence is magic, they shake the earth and heaven’s when they sing and this aria, my favorite of all, takes my breath away❣️🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Aretha Franklin's father was a famous minister. Her mother divorced him due to his philandering. Then he fathered a child by a 12-year old member of his congregation. Aretha had her first two children at ages 12 and 15. That her childhood was so troubled makes her achievements all the more unusual.
I watched that on TV and it was STUNNING!! That woman could sing anything! I watched it again several times on YouTube and saved it. Thanks for bringing it and the backstory to the Steady crowd.
Thanks to Dan Rather for trying to appeal to people who like Aretha Franklin. I know that Mr Rather is trying to bring lightheartedness to steady.substack readers. I am sorry, this does not seem to be very interesting to me but there are a lot of people here that probably followed this woman singer. I am not sure how many people are really interested in this singer either. In my mind there are other things I would rather be focusing on but I suppose we need a break from the regular routine.
This is what a seasoned, confident and supremely talented professional looks like when called upon to step up. Hank Aaron pinch hitting, bases loaded, 1st pitch, grand slam. That said, LP owns this; the greatest aria of all. Much love for them both. Spectacular.
What a moving performance. Aretha was the consummate artist. I remember watching the performance in total awe of her voice. My heart is full knowing the back story.
Dan, Elliot -- I sometimes set your posts aside for a few hours or a day, seeking a time when I can bear the topics or fully absorb and enjoy them without distraction. I just opened your gift of Aretha...Wiping away my tears now, but letting the goosebumps and warm heart stick around a little while longer. This made my night. Thank you thank you THANK YOU...!
THANK YOU MR.RATHER!
I will always remember that it was U who revealed to me this transcendent moment in music history .

Awesome!
thank you for this. I haven't ever really paid attention to the Grammy's, so I missed this the first time around in 98.
This just made me sob, it's so incredible. I'm only a passing fan of Franklin's, but now I see where her Legend status comes from.
Nothing short of spectacular.

Thanks for the Saturday Smile!
A true artistic genius
Thank you sharing this spectacular performance and story. What a gracious, generous, and talented lady Arethra.

I cried the first time I heard this, and it brought tears again just now. Her magnificence is historic and will be forever.
