I really don’t get into sports - especially not as I grow older - but there is something so thrilling about March Madness. Even though I watch few games and haven’t done a bracket in years, I find myself always keeping up just a bit during the tourney and always feeling excited when a Cinderella wins a game. Something poetic about it all.
Time others to get a few good articles and books read.
Always working two or three jobs to pay for my 4 year degree....well I never caught the bug? I was slinging spaghetti and vying for tips. Should I feel left out? I wonder and ponder this reading about this “March madness.”
The only madness I knew about was “King Lears” in an honors (only 7 students) class. I was in heaven!
Thank you, Dan, for the relief and joy of reading about March Madness instead of the madness which is in politics right now. Looking forward to seeing the games.
NONMOTIVATING ABUSE Bill Walton led the Bruins to success under his respectful UCLA coach, John Wooden. Walton scoffs at Bobby Knight's contention that his behavior is motivational, not abusive: "Basketball's Tarnished Knight," Bill Walton, Time, 5-29-00.
My immigrant dad played soccer all throughout Europe back in the 1920’s-30’s until he had to escape Poland. He adopted watching baseball and basketball in the US. Raised in NC, we watched UNC, NC STATE, EAST CAROLINA, and DUKE play. Very exciting times, then and now.
The joie de vivre in the men’s and women’s tournaments that constitute the essence of March madness serves as a welcome respite from the craziness of the world around us, the dysfunctional banking system caused by greed, the crimes against humanity in Ukrainian, China’s unbridled imperialism threatening Taiwan, and other egregious acts by mankind. If only these games could spur more camaraderie in this great nation that needs unity more than ever before.
My husband would have bern with you all the way... but I find lacking equally thrilling sports (like you influenced by what my grandchildren play, bien sur) like hockey, womens rowing (regattas against top ,teams), track and field ie.
I know it's a very long shot..but I'd love to see The University of Vermont take it all! As a lifelong Vermonter I think this could be the year. We haven't come close since 2004, so we're overdue. Go Cats! Go!
My extended family has had a bracket competition for about 10 years now. No money but there is a coveted “Cat’s Ass” trophy. Last year we finally added the Roman’s bracket. We’re all rabid South Carolina fans and we’re cheering on our lady G’s. That trophy is “The Granny” which was named in honor of my. mother. We lost my dear brother just a month ago and he was the biggest fan of all.
Like some of the other commenters, I'm not much of a sports fan - but when you live in Indiana for a few decades you tend to become an open-wheel racing and basketball fan without even realizing it (high school and college; pros not so much). Thank you, Mr. Rather and co-writers, for another GREAT article!!!
I went to NC State in the 60's, and that made me a life-long S-16 fan. It seemed to be all about the ACC then (except for that pesky UCLA). Not just Carolina and Duke. NC State won it all twice, and there was Wake Forest and others. Now it seems like any team can win it all. That's probably a good thing.
FDU rocks !

I am not a sports fan, but your storytelling makes me want to be!

Hope that the University of Pittsburgh Panthers win it all.
