A Reason To Smile
As the Democratic Party descends on the city of Chicago, we thought it a great opportunity to highlight a Broadway musical about the rollicking 1920’s Jazz Age in the Windy City. “Chicago” debuted on the Great White Way almost 50 years ago, but it was the revival in 1996 that won seven Tony Awards. It is currently the second-longest running show in Broadway history.
The musical’s most famous song, “All That Jazz,” is a showstopper that showcases famed choreographer Bob Fosse’s signature style. It is our reason to smile.
The list of women who have starred in the show about the perils of fame is a who’s who of musical theater: Gwen Verdon, Chita Rivera, Bebe Neuwirth, Ann Reinking. And from Hollywood: Christie Brinkley, Lynda Carter, Pamela Anderson, Melanie Griffith, and Brooke Shields. “Chicago” also made it to the big screen with Renée Zellweger and Catherine Zeta-Jones in the starring roles. The story has attracted so many high-profile actresses because the characters are empowered, complex women who are driven yet flawed.

I absolutely love 'Chicago'! Bob Fosse and Gwen Verdon worked so well together! His choreography was cutting edge back then. I remember watching a documentary about Bob Fosse and Gwen Verdon and their relationship. It was excellent! Thank you, Mr. Rather, for reminding me about that fantastic show! Brings a smile to my face thinking about it!
