After President Biden was inaugurated I quit cable TV. I knew they were never going to stop talking trump. Then after a couple years I realized I was mostly watching shows on Prime. This year I got rid of my TV. And I have never missed it. I sent my vote in the first day and it has been received and counted. This week I finish pollworker training and we will start next week. Let’s do this.

Inspiring!! Canceling cable tv, canceling Prime video, getting rid of your tv altogether. Voting on the first day, training to be a poll worker. Participating in and protecting our constitutional right to vote by being a poll worker. Thank you!!💙💙💙🌊🌊🌊🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Thank you so much, Lisa! You and all poll workers are my heroes. I appreciate you greatly!

Well thanks. But I really do enjoy it. It’s always a pleasure to meet the voters.

I enjoy your articles and agree with you 100 percent. But please! no more photos of the FORMER president in any pose.

trump's picture is like being startled by turning a page in National Geographic and there is a snake picture. But the vilified snake is just being the reptile that it was born to be while trump became a reptile with all the negativity that is associated with that designation!

With all due respect I'm startled by snakes but ... this effin' guy! I'm repulsed and horrified at this poor excuse for a human animal.

I could do without any photos of Musk, either. Thanks Dan and Team Steady. I felt myself 'cracking' a couple weeks ago and got off the social media and limited my news consumption to what I could 'read' vs. listen to (over and over). I feel better, but my extra fancy anxiety continues to plague me. You are a calm voice in this storm.

I agree. Too many folks are stressing out. So watch old movies, read good books. Don’t talk politics.

If you need to do something, contact your local Democratic organization and see if you can volunteer.

Otherwise, let it go. It will be what it will be. Well, maybe pray 🙏

Ah, yes. I am reading Jodi Piccoult's latest novel, practicing my mountain dulcimer, and writing notes and card to friends. And in any case, my social life is carried on wholly in person, not on computer. But I still find myself anxious enough to pray several times a day for my beloved nation.

Expand full comment

Ive been praying the Psalms.

Expand full comment

I love the Psalms. Poetry and song, especially the 23rd Psalm. This passage resonates with me so much right now.:

“Yea, though I walk through the

valley of the shadow of death, I shall

fear no evil for though art with me.”

These words describe where we are as a nation right now. We are traveling through a valley that feels dark, but it is “the valley of the SHADOW of death” and we just don’t know what will happen. It’s terrifying that there is one candidate who is evil, cares only for himself and who wants to literally destroy our democratic way of life.He also seems to be sliding into dementia, which makes him wholly unfit to run the United States of America. But the other candidate is full of light!!

She is strong, intelligent, courageous, steady, experienced and empathetic. She wants.to make people’s lives better through an “opportunity economy” that lifts people up. Kamala is a capable warrior who will fight to defeat the horrible beast who aims to get revenge. And, remember—she has done this before!! (taking. down the Sinaloa cartel and the Guadalajara Cartel) when she was Attorney General of California. For me, I need to be working to help Harris/Walz win, so I’ll be donating and starting with my siblings and cousins, checking to make sure they are registered to vote and that they have a plan.I will then ask them to check with their friends and coworkers to make sure they’re registered and have a plan to vote. Luckily my family leans heavily Democratic and some of the cousins are in the swing state of Arizona and others are in Texas and can cast their votes for Colin Allred for Senate and defeat Ted Cruz!

I have also prayed about this election!

Expand full comment

That an election is decided by 7 states when we have 50 proves that our system is broken because the people are substandard waiting for the Easter bunnies

Expand full comment

I agree with you Joan and share your frustration at our current political process. It is far too long, costs way too much money and focuses on several relatively smaller States.

What we have now, as a result of the electoral college process is minority rule. We have politicians beholden to the upper class that fund them and are incapable of making the necessary changes.

It’s hard for me to picture getting out of this mess other than major campaign finance reform, elimination of the electoral college and TERM LIMITS on Congress AND SCOTUS.

Expand full comment

Everything is easy to fix but the American public doesn't care. We need a public vote to get rid of EC; make voting in Presidential elections compulsory (26 other countries do this); campaigning is limited to 6 weeks; term limits on everyone ; age limits; NO PACS OR PRIVATE FUNDING only public funding for the 6 weeks; and the new President moves into the White House by Thanksgiving.

Expand full comment

Yes! This! JFK announced his candidacy for President in January of 1960 - 10 months before the election. We need to put a stop to four-year-and-growing campaigns. I really like 6 weeks for campaigning. And only public funding. It should not cost 2 billion US dollars to run for president! And most of all - get rid of the electoral college. I want my single vote to count just as much as the guy from Pennsylvania.

Expand full comment

I couldn't agree with you more! How can the US President have a term limit but the VP, SC Judges, and US House & Senate members have none? And the crazy electoral college.

Expand full comment

I, too, am unhappy with the current fact of swing states.

If truly "free and fair" election... there should be another way. (Constitution has been amended before). A collective: one citizen= one vote.

Stacking certain states with conspiracy theorists... really doubtful that was the original plan!!!

But, psychologically, 'birds of a feather flock together'.

Sadly, those states can lean more psycho, than the logical.

Wishing the Golden Rule would come back into society. Ethics. Trust. and STEADINESS.

If we get rid of the electoral college we'll make a huge stride toward that goal.

Voting is a good start. But please don't ignore the fact that this could be our last three weeks living in the world as we know it and our country as we know it -- which will be gone forever if a dictator from Day 1 takes over! Rather than taking a walk -- take a walk while knocking doors to get out Harris-Walz voters. Or with postcards. Or go to your local Democratic HQ and ask how you can help putting together canvassing packets or delivering yard signs. There are a million ways to help and if we all do a little bit it will add up to a lot!!! I've been volunteering as a door-knocker on weekends -- it's easy fun and could make the difference! Whatever you do, don't wake up the day after an election we lose by a hair and wish you had done more!!

Expand full comment

I agree. Volunteering on the campaign means you are with people who feel as you and I do! It reduces my anxiety to be with them rather than staying home and feeling anxious. I actually don’t watch TV. I’ve watched a few of the events on the Kamala channel on YouTube. The town hall today in Michigan with Liz Cheney and Maria Shriver is well worth watching.

Oh Dan as great a journalist that you are, I think you’re just as good as a psychiatrist, personal planner, motivational speaker and all other professions designed to make one feel better. Your advice about polls is 100% correct. They don’t have the answers…as my good friend John Madden would always say”you don’t know the winner until after the game”. Take most of what you hear with a grain of salt. There is too much on social media and on u reliable news sites. Just keep aware. We need this democracy and it is in our hands to keep it. DT is pig a criminal and a low life. I worked in sports tv my whole career and heard plenty of locker room jokes….but in a bar, among colleagues, not at rallies and certainly not personal like he spoke of Arnold Palmer with a word that is foul…just like the man who spoke it. He still has 2 weeks left o sink lower and maybe lose a bunch more voters.

Love you Liz Cheney. Your heart and head are where they should be. Country and Constitution first.

I've finished canvassing for a local Democrat on our little island in Maine, put the last of about 2000 postcards/letters to swing state voters in the mail, and am packing to travel to swing state Wisconsin for GOTV. I've never done social media but continue to be a CSpan listener. This beautiful Autumn evening, I did a few hours of heavy duty gardening - weeding, preparing the beds for Autumn sowing and planting - preparing for next year's bounty. And isn't that what we are all doing for next year's bounty of good government and democracy. Put your back into it, sweat a bit, get your hands dirty - and keep your heart's eye on the rewards of our efforts.

ThankYou. I am more analytical than emotional about politics. But even I am heartened and encouraged by the communal commitment to this joint exercise to win power and move forward toward realizing our shared goals. No matter the outcome, we have created strong bonds and strong systems to sustain our continuing activism. I think the majority of the Left has finally relearned the lessons of the Civil Rights movement - yes, we need to march but we must translate that energy into strategic voting. (And, for the most part, have learned to reject vote splitting purity tests, pipe dreams, and Pied Pipers on power trips. For the most part. )

Sadly being a nut case is far too common these days.

It’s illegal. Joyce Vance eluded to it on Civil Discourse this morning. UCLA Law Professor Rick Hasan is a specialist in election integrity and campaign finance. He stated in a tweet that this is a violation of 52 USC 10307. The attorney general of PA is a Democrat, Michelle A Henry. We must all hope and pray Garland wakes up and does something like now!

Expand full comment

Garland is either the biggest coward to ever hold the office of Attorney General, or complicit. There is no excuse for how he bungled the J6 investigation. One thing that I resent about Biden is that he didn't fire him when it became clear that he was dragging his feet on investigating and indicating Trump. I know that he wanted to distance himself from the case, but Garland I'd guilty of legal malpractice as far as I'm concerned.

The Trump/Elon crowd believes all of life is transactional and comes with a price tag. Let's prove them wrong.

Yes, especially the way he keeps upping the $$. He began at $47, then went to $100. Now he’s added a bunch of zeros.

I wonder how that correlates to the reporting that a leaked batch of his ground game for trump shows about 25% of “door knocks” are “suspicious.” IOW, fake outs for the cash. Canvassers enter addresses a half mile away & list them as no one home or refused survey.

His operation is supposed to be the best of the groups the campaign cobbled together.

I am sick and tired of the GOP, MAGA Republicans, Felon Trump, and JD Vance, who use Lies and Deception and brag about it to try to win an election. Why are they so afraid of the Truth? These leaders who use Deception and Fear are not worthy. They care only for themselves. Money and Power are all they care about. They make their ill-gotten money on the working American’s backs. They do not love, care for, or defend America's Constitution, Democracy, Rule of Law, Freedom, or Equality for all—elect-smart-thinking American leaders who will defend and protect America, Democracy, and the working American.

Thank you, Mr. Rather, for keeping us sane. I'm sure I won't be able to tear myself from MSNBC or stop reading the two national papers to which I subscribe, but being in nature is the recipe for restoring one's sanity. I hear you! I felt a little guilty when someone took the time, effort and postage to send a postcard to us here in Arizona. We also voted blue up and down the ballot. It does look like Ruben Gallego has an edge over that idiot Kari Lake. So there is that. We are in the small town where John McCain lived (and a lot of the locals think he was too liberal!) and the Harris/Waltz signs disappear on a daily basis with yet another trump sign taking its place. Speaks so much of the character of his cult. We no longer frequent our favorite breakfast spot because it appears to be a hangout for loud maga cult members. We haven't lived here long enough to have met many known sane acquaintances. Like you, we soldier on.

One more or less cheerful thought is soon enough Trump will be too far gone to carry on even should he win. His dementia is not going to improve, it will only get worse. He will not be able to carry on, he will have to be institutionalized. How can we ever trust the Republican Party ever again? We can’t. Vance cannot be trusted either because he knows it too. They have poisoned the trust of that party in their zeal to dominate.
