Chief Justice Roberts told Congress to act: why haven't they?

Would James Chaney from Meridian, Mississippi and Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner from New York City and indeed Martin Luther King, Jr. thank the Senators for honoring an unconstitutional filibuster to deny millions of Americans their unfettered right to the ballot box?

Chief Justice Roberts (in Rucho v Common Cause, to name just one example) told Congress they had to enact legislation under Article 1.4 because the Supreme Court was not going to interfere with an "equal branch of government" (State Legislatures) when under Article 1.4 Congress has failed to enact legislation to set federal rules for the times, places and manner of voting.

As an advocate for civil rights, I would very much like to talk with Senator Scott and his staff and give a presentation to see what Senator Scott would be willing to consider for uniform federal election laws, such as we already have with our federal voter registration system.

Perhaps because I am 82 and was at Smith College in 1957 and did not go to the south to march in solidarity with those who fought for the dignity of equal access to the ballot box that since 2016 as part of National Voter Corps, I have sought to reach out to educate Americans on voting rights.

I hope and pray that Manchin and Sinema are the last imposters to shamefully present themselves as Democrats.

I have loved our country all long as I can remember, there have been times I have been in strong disagreement and expressed it peacefully, had the luck to travel the world with my job and discuss what other countries believe, etc. never imagined we would move to such a great divide. The right to vote should be among the most important issues for all Americans

We should want everyone that can to vote. Where are headed? Thank you for sharing your wisdom.

Our country is in a dark moment. It is truly scary to see the voter suppression bills pass in so many states. But I still believe in the fairness of most Americans if they get the facts. Keep writing Dan!

Then you get to voting and again those who are bought and paid for have decided how voting will go! Can’t have everyone voting. Things will change unless we stop it! The Republicans want us subservient and their supporters don’t seem to be able to figure that out. If it happens though be prepared for them to blame the rest of us for not preventing it. Sorry for dooms day scenario but good possibility.

Senators Manchi and Sinema should run under the party they seem to support! Republicans.

People need to wake up and tell them NO WAY! We are in a country where RICH business people who do NOT pay taxes, are raising the cost of everything! Why? 1.) because they can.

2.) Because if they end up HAVING to increase wages they won’t lose a cent. Prime example WALMARTS owners cut benefits in half why cause they CAN. Biden gets blamed for cost increases! No that is a great scapegoat for them but not true! Cost increases go to those doing it, businesses!

Thank you Mr. Rather, we needed to hear this message of hope in the depths of this despair over the current state of affairs regarding critical voting rights.

Thank you for the link to Senator Warnock's moving speech on the voting rights act, a stirring call for all of us to dedicate ourselves to equal rights for all our citizens.

Thanks Dan and Elliot very much for the Warnock speech. The Senate failed to meet this moral moment this time, but if will not happen again if your prediction of a massive mobilization of those who believe in democracy in the next election rise up to oust those who lacked the courage to meet the challenge of this moral moment.

Even the retiring republican senators have no backbone. They all should have voted for the voting rights bill. But as republicans they show no guts to stand up for whats right

Senator Warnock is a truly compelling speaker. He could become a strong Democratic contender in the future.

"It is fitting that Senator Warnock can now carry forward the cause to which Dr. King gave his life."

No, MLK was assassinated. Big difference.

As always, a thoughtful post, but I want to know how to get this info out to "the masses". I fear with this particular platform there is only preaching to the choir and I don't know if this choir is big enough to overcome the forces of evil that are taking over our democracy. The media reported this loss as a big loss for Biden instead of reporting in big letters, that the GOP voted against voting rights for all. How can we get the main stream media ( for sure the blurbs that show up when you pull up Yahoo and other feeds when you turn on your computer) to put the blame where it needs to be....each one of these defeats needs to be laid squarely and loudly at the feet of all the GOP. Our course we have to have every democracy loving person on board to defeat it's demise, but I think we need to reach more folks. Lastest gallup poll showed more folks identfy as Republicans than Democrats (now polls are pretty unreliable) with about 11% not identifying as either. IF this is true, the Democrats have even more work to do that we have thought.

Proudly voted for Senator Warnock and will proudly vote for him again. His words ring honest and true, spoken with sincerity and a firm belief in e. pluribus unum. But his very reelection is threatened by the voter suppression laws already signed in Georgia. In our great state, Redistricting lines have already been gerrymandered in such a way to have thrown stumbling blocks into some races. But it is still a numbers game and we must get out and vote. At the end of the day, the sun must not set on our democracy. I recall the 60s too as a young college student. And the words of The music ring true again: “There’s battle lines being drawn. Nobody’s right if everybody’s wrong”. With so much resistance from behind, it is time we stopped and asked hey what’s that sound? Everybody look what’s going down.
