This song by Louis Armstrong had an element of controversy too. It was a message of peace at a time when America was being torn apart by the painful business of desegregation. Blacks who worked to blunt the sharp necessity of change were not always welcome in their communities.

While few would have called Armstrong a sellout or even the more vicious label of "Uncle Tom," within the Civil Rights Movement there was division amidst unity.

I have an idea for you to consider.

As a country, we have not had much of a chance to celebrate in most of my lifetime. When WWII ending, the whole world was happy that it was finally over. Since then, I can’t think of much in my lifetime that we could celebrate other than Obama’s election.

Korea, Vietnam, and now the middle eastern conflicts just fell apart. I suspect the after affects of Covid will be more of the same.

We need something to bring us all together and to reignite our love for this country.

Does this make any sense to you?

So great, thank you! If we all worked together as we did after 9/11, it could indeed be a wonderful world.

So awesome! Thank you for this smile! I read this article after reading Elliot's article about 'The World on Fire'. This was a great antidote to my troubled thoughts about our world in crisis. And yet, this uplift was inspired by the tragedy in New Orleans from Hurricane Ida. It is an interesting perspective to remember to embrace what is good in the midst of what is heart breaking.

This song will be played at my funeral. I have loved it forever, and Louis Armstrong. Today, the world isn't always wonderful, today, personally, it isn't. I just learned that a classmate from my youth was murdered by her ex. Still, it truly is a wonderful world, even if the people aren't always. Listen to the babies laugh, sit by the ocean waves, look for the rainbows, reach for a friend's hand, love with all your heart. Yes, it can be wonderful, if we only look.

I think you should post this every couple of months....the world of Louis Armstrong was not all beauty....things were pretty rotten in so many ways, yet he still found a way to see a beautiful world and to share that vision with the rest of us. Thank you for bringing this to our attention in such a timely time!
