If she'd been white none of you fakes would be here jacking your jaws praising a loser. She could have given her spot up someone who'd shown up & respected her commitment . Integrity
I did not hear the criticism about Simone Biles. She made a very wise decision to withdraw when the twisties started. Her mind and body were telling her "not safe at this time". I do not understand the difference between choosing action and forging ahead in adversity. Not a complete non sequitur-There is a unique hate crime that needs your historical perspective.
Pushing past our limits has become such an expectation that we seem to apply it to every activity from sports to work. We expect it from our Olympic athletes and from ourselves. This manic momentum in daily life continues despite scientific evidence linking heart disease and stress. It continues despite research that indicates humans are more productive with shorter work weeks. Biles' decision to withdraw is a wake up call to listen to our bodies and our environment. We can apply the wisdom of her decision to our daily lives when we take time to breathe deeply, scan our bodies and ask "what is my intuition telling me to do?" Chances are the decision to do the right thing for ourselves will also result in a positive outcome for those around us just as it did for Biles' teammates.
You nailed it!!! There comes a time (perhaps several) in all of our lives when we need to say, “ I can do no more”. This is not a failure, it is courage and honesty!
I've been back and forth over the past year or two with regards to Dan Rather and some of what I considered his 'out of touch' opinions and reports. But THIS story, is the Dan Rather, I remembered and admired throughout my life. Bravo Dan! and Bravo Simone. This one little ripple in the water has sent massive waves throughout the world. ~~ this is truly a "Profile in Courage"!!!
What she did took courage regardless of who she is which is only a portion of who she is. To me that is the greatest of all time. If we would all take her lead we would and will be better. You are better and greater than anything. You took a stand and a lead for your mental health. Now that’s a great mentor and human being.
This article is life. The stories within this article are mind boggling. Love a well written, informed, and intellectual perspective article. the content matches the subject matter. Excellent.
how do people who cheer and applaud when a gambler in a country song sings "you've got to know when to hold, know when to fold," but when an astoundingly talented and courageous young woman does just that, they revile her? what happened to the "sapiens" in homo sapiens, the humanity in human beings?
Compassion and empathy please people. It is easy to sit at home and criticize. I ask what have you done in your life? This young woman is strong I applaud her! Y
Thank you, Mr. Rather. Very well said! It made me think of Jackie Robinson, Muhammed Ali, and many others that stood up with strength and courage facing adversity and knocked it out of the ballpark!!! I found her to be exactly as you describe and I hope that all three of my granddaughters recognize in her that it isn't always easy standing for right!!!

Simone Biles has deeply inspired me as a powerful courageous champion Simone Biles is everything 💞
As always, Dan writes beautifully and this tribute brought a tear to my eye.
