I always love what Dan has to say, but please fix the typos -- especially in the concluding grafs.

Mr. Rather, thank you for the words of encouragement. I remember watching your broadcasts on the evening news as a child. Even if I didn’t understand all the topics and events at the time, I appreciated the soothing attributes in your demeanor and delivery. Your words strike with a deep resonance and cut through the heaviness that many of us face. Everyone is tired, but the importance of hope cannot be underscored enough in these times. Thank you for using social platforms to express your views and speak your voice. Thank you for your humility, empathy, and courage. You touch more lives than you know.

I'll find out in 2 weeks if the mass recently detected in my breast is cancerous or not. Your words give me comfort to face this new year with the intent of nurturing the joys of life you articulated so beautifully.

I enjoy this essay for the importance of health. A healthy mind and a good heart is what makes the world go round and round. Health magazine's and books about health give us strength and understanding for the nature of being healthy. I just went out this morning to the vitamin shoppe for Yogi positive energy with sweet tangerine tea, I said to myself this tea is a cure all. I wish you'all a healthy and happy New Year 2022.

In the Jewish faith, on Rosh Hashanah, the Book of Life is opened by God. He inscribes there "who shall live and who shall die" in the coming year. On Yom Kippur this Book of Life is closed. It is out of our hands whether we will live or die, but not how well we will live during the year. Approaching my 80th year on earth and my 15th in retirement, I have become a "professional" volunteer. I work at Red Cross blood drives and Covid clinics. And I think I get more out of it than the people coming to them.

Mr. Rather, my husband and I are in our late 50s but lost the last of our four parents nearly two years ago at this point. Your well-formed insights and words of wisdom warm me and feel like the words of a respected parent or grandparent--something our family no longer has. Thank you for giving voice to the thoughts and insights you harbor, and for finding contemporary ways to share them effectively with so many. I wish you good health in 2022!!

Thank you for your eloquent message. We agree on the importance of hope. I refuse to give up. Hope gets me through the day. I believe in the best of humanity. It gets more difficult almost on a daily basis. But I hang on. And pray a lot.

Thank you Mr. Rather for your thoughts. Your messages, such as todays, refocus me to be understanding, compassionate and to take notice and to appreciate what is right in front of my face. I value your words and what you ask us to focus on in this time of year. You are a role model and inspiring.

Mr. Rather, Does it bother you that CBS has so ardently embraced militarism?

Thank you so much---never has there been a blessing that is more valuable than that of good health. Unfortunately, most of us don't give it much thought until it is no longer "good"! I will admit that events surrounding me personally, the past three years, have caused me to veer off-course in this area. COVID has not helped, as I'm sure many can attest. I'm quite envious of those who have been able to use COVID as a catalyst to do better with their exercise and diet regimens. However, the New Year brings yet another opportunity, right? That's the way I'm looking at it, and I certainly wish it for all of you, as well. May everyone's New Year be blessed with ALL good things, especially good health.

I am grateful for this forum in that both Dan and Elliot and their Steady Team provide a way to connect with others about the important issues and emotions shared by many in our nation. Too often, I find that most, (thankfully not all), of the conversations I have with others do not. Coupled with the isolation caused by the pandemic is my 1500 mile move to another state. I feel vulnerable and fear the attacks on Democracy for myself, but most of all for my children and grandchildren. This forum reminds me to be hopeful. Fear and anxiety induce a bodily stress reaction. When the cortisol reaction goes on too long, the immune system becomes weaker, harmful during a pandemic. Hopefulness helps, but so does connecting with positive minded friends and family, meditation, exercise, proper sleep, and eating foods that contribute to good health. In other words, take good care of yourselves and those you love in 2022.

Thank you for this. It articulated nicely what I struggle to verbalize. I have mental illness that debilitates me from time to time, not permitting me to leave my home or even talk to others on the phone. Yet, the one constant that I have found is that things get better; not perfect, but better. I believe that things will change for the better as long as people with conscience and integrity are elected, as long as young people don’t give up before they’ve had their chances, as long as we try to be mindful and kind. We may fail, and we may fail often, but we can certainly keep trying. Above all, what keeps me going is gratitude for all the good things in life, from a beautiful sunrise to the antics of hummingbirds. Of course my dogs comfort me and give me reasons to get up and care for someone else. My sisters’ love sustains me very much. My income is sufficient that I can give some of it to others and to a few favorite charities. I am grateful for all these things each and every day. That gratitude allows me to await the β€œbetter.” I miss Mr. Rather who told it straight without nonsense.
