I have read Heather Cox Richardson’s “How the South Won the Civil War.” I also subscribe to her daily summary “Letters from an American.” Her historical expertise is the Civil War period. Comparing the language of Confederate leaders, William F Buckley Jr, and today’s conservative Republicans, one cannot tell which quote comes from what source. I think the reason is the intent is the same: wealthy power elite maintaining position by dividing poor whites & blacks from achieving their common needs by inflaming hatred & creating false divisions.

The Consummately Professional, the inflected Dan, has Long Been "in The Weave".

I tip my off-kilter hat to Dan Rather, and ANY American Broadcaster who can declare, with Gentle Emphasis, that ANY Miscreant Leader MUST be Brought to Valid Scrutiny.

>"Let Justice be Saved, and Served."<

Thanks, again, Dan.

This is a joke............I was there by happenstance and the crowd was NOT RADICAL AND DESTRUCTIVE AS ARE AND WERE THE black riots and destruction and killings!! The new vp encouraged the violence as did Oprah Winfrey saying and prove, "racism will not be over until those over 60 in the US die off". Fact. The mobs of antifa, blm (a horrible racist group) and supporters paid to assault and burn and destroy were far more horrific than these "paid" radicals who entered by breaking in our nation's Capitol. Positively wrong!!!! Positively criminal and it should not have happened. Look to the police who did nothing!!!!!!!!!!!! Nothing to stop them on the outside of the building!!!! The liberals and democrats wanted this to happen and it did. And Confederate flags, I counted no more than three among the thousands of people there. And I see one in the picture and they are NOT THE PEOPLE WHO CARE ABOUT OUR COUNTRY. They are the radicals just like the racist blacks in this country. blacks ARE TAUGHT TO HATE WHITES WHEN THEY ARE YOUNG AND NOW YOUNG WHITE CHILDREN are being taught that Obama is the hero and White people are the enemy. That is being taught in our public schools and Trump wanted that to change, liberals and democrats did not. It is a shame here in this once wonderful country that America is dying from within. Communist manifesto says it will happen. And it is.

I was in DC, by happenstance, didn't really know what was going on. BUT THIS WAS NOT WHAT WE ARE AND THIS IS A PART OF AN UGLY AND HATEFUL POLITICAL CANCER.

This really is the beginning of the end. If you do some TRUE soul searching you will know. It only gets worse from here folks. Have gratitude for each day, experience all the joy, love, friends family, and nature while you can. Be kind to your fellow man.

Well said Mr. Rather and I stand behind you. I am so ashamed of the Republican senators who refused to acknowledge the truth. I hope that there will be jstice in the end for each of them.

Again, a Brit watching aghast. Would someone please explain the following to me? You have the Legislative, Executive and Judicial arms of government, each with their respective roles. Why is it that the Legislative arm judges the Legislating, in this particular case? In other words, why is this a political decision and not a judicial one?

Many thanks!

Dan, once again the Republican cabal has protected Trump from the judgment of the people. I rarely agree with McConnell, but the are civil and criminal actions that can be brought against these conspirators. Hopefully, Investigations in New York, Georgia, and DC among others will succeed where the Senate failed.

Thanks, Dan! I have always followed your news while you were at CBS and miss your reporting so much. Yes, as your title said “A Moment for Reckoning”! These unbelievable people holding their titles as citizens’ representatives voted unconscionably to cast their vote! I always wonder how can they face their constituents, children or country? They betrayed all those three Cs!!! I hope those vivid footages of videos haunting them to the rest of their lives!!!!

I am truly sickened that there was an acquittal! Good grief! There is no one in comparison to Hitler than Trump and vice versus.

I honestly felt that 9-11 was the worst day for our country but this ruling will surely be the beginning of our next one.

God bless us all. How do these people sleep at night? Surely they have nightmares...or no conscience at all.

Thank you Craig H for your concern this American appreciates it. We do need to hold them accountable but we also cannot rely on the seditious senators we have in our government. We are still a nation of laws and my hope is once the senate hearings are over then the real work will start with law enforcement. Like Dan, I have a very deep sadness and actually pity for those who follow trump. He has spoken to those who hate our country and all it has tried to stand for. For most of us the civil war was done over 100 yrs ago, for others not and it's those I pity and pray for.

Our Constitution was written in the 1700's and I do not believe that our Founding Fathers thought for one moment that it shouldn't be revised or added too as the times changed. The time is upon us to make those changes. The major change, in my opinion, should be the Electoral College. It astounds me that our country, who should be the leaders of a democratic government does not elect our presidents by popular vote, instead it is handed off to a few states to decide. To explain a little-it was written when the only people who could vote were white men who owned land and slaves. I might have this wrong but I think the number of slaves mattered as to how many votes the state got. We can all vote now so that needs to be removed and should have been during the last century. Trump got 74.2mil votes and I think that President Biden received 81mil. If the EC had been removed in the 1990's trump would never have been elected.

There is still many things in America that we need to work on but some change to our Constitution should be first

Apparently Trump spent $50,000,000 in campaign funds advertising the July 6 event. Not hearing much about this detail but I think it is big evidence of his intentions.

The evidence in this case is clear-cut, as was evidence for the first impeachment attempt. This power and attention seeking narcissist is not just going to fade away. As long as he has an audience he will continue to wreak havoc on the American people and her institutions. He must be convicted and barred from future office. His followers must be held to account by our legal system.

If these republicans refuse to convict, we, the people, need to work harder to get them removed from office. No conviction is complicity, uncaring about our Constitution. They have no place in congress.
