I’ve lived (and voted!) in Wisconsin for a year now, and was incredibly relieved that Judge Janet won. However, my enthusiasm is tempered with a tinge of worry. There was also an election yesterday to fill a vacant state senate seat, which the Republican won. This gives Republicans a supermajority in the Senate. While they don’t have the votes in the house to allow them to override the governor’s veto, they do now have the votes to impeach, including Supreme Court justices. With Republicans facing the loss of their lock on power via a court decision overturning their gerrymandered district maps, they’re not going to go quietly. Very concerned about what they may try to restructure the court and prevent a liberal leaning court from destroying their hold on power.

Mr. Rather, this quote tells us all we need to know about what is wrong with our democracy. “ With all that at stake, it’s understandable that both sides poured money into the race — an eye-popping $42 million. For a single judgeship. …” No seat or office should be for sale. Money has perverted our democracy. Money has made people like Mitch McConnell and yes, Nancy Pelosi so formidable. Money makes them more powerful than they should be.

Senator Whitehouse has studied, had years on and published reports on “dark money” in our system. Yet I have not seen any legislation to restrict it. Senator Ossoff introduced legislation to stop all financial trading by Congress. That bill languishes in in action.

We need to remove all private money from our democracy. We need to publicly fund all campaigns. We KNOW these are the answers to make Congress answerable to US. Instead Congress is bought and paid for by corporations and billionaires. Nothing will change until the money hose is shut down.
