My niece and her family live in Apollo Beach. Their backyard is the bay of Tampa. They have lived there for more than 30 years. She texted me today. She said there’s never been a storm like this in over 100 years. She’s scared. They can’t find gasoline, they’ve loaded up their valuables, and they know they will lose their home. Nothing is more important than empathy for another human being’s suffering.

It's predicted to be the worse hurricane to hit the Tampa Bay area since 1921. Why won't these poison saturated GOP MAGAs face reality and make the connection that wannabe short-circuited emperor could care less about the poor folks in these areas. Here's to Mar a Lardo also taking a direct hit. Best of luck to your niece and family.

He’s evil and doesn’t care even a little bit about ordinary citizens he only cares about himself! It’s up to us the American people to rid ourselves for once and for all of this odious disease called Trump. He has poisoned the brains of millions of of Americans just as Hitler did to Germans and Austrians in the 1930’s and 40’s! It’s shocking how many Americans buy into his hate and that of Fox TV the worst propaganda network ever to be allowed on American airwaves! Fox has caused irreparable damage to America and the minds of millions who believe everything they broadcast! What ever happened to people who questioned things that didn’t sound right? Critical Thinking? Those who fall for right wing lies and especially Trump crazy’s stories that Biden didn’t help governors during Hurricane Helene what is wrong with you check your resources because that LIAR is telling HUGE TALES that have no credibility at all. Change the channel FOX is lying to you Trump is as usual lying to you! He will never, ever help anyone except the Wealthy! He plans to get rid of FEMA

Empathy? tRump has none, by Goldendoodle was tested and he has empathy.

Expand full comment

On top of the lies that Trump and his minions are spewing about the federal efforts to get help to the devastated communities along the lower East Coast, in Florida, Governor Ron DeSantis, refused to extend voter registration which ends today. People are evacuating from Florida and he will not extend the time people have to register to vote. The entire Republican party has completely lost it's way and, it seems, their minds.

This is criminal!!

Megan, did you see that he refused calls from Vice-President Harris? An aide leaked that to a news source and suddenly it was out there! Just as quick, the little go-go boots man from Tallahassee announced he had no idea that Vice-President Harris was trying to reach him via telephone! He seriously expects all Floridians to believe what he says just like the orange man! It is beyond pathetic! I am not surprised that he will not extend time for people to register to vote because it is part of the republican playbook.

Expand full comment

Nope! We have worked too hard. Democrats are still working to turn out the vote, and we will not stop until all of the work is done.

Expand full comment

Goodness I hope you are correct. All I have to go on are the incessant polls that show things tied at best in the states where it will matter, and sometimes trump ahead. I try to not put much faith in polls, but I seem to not be able to shake these off, and the fact that the media continues to give trump a free pass (even the NYT while endorsing Harris doesn't say anything bad about trump, does not point out loudly and clearly that he economic policies will be disastrous or that he is exhibiting very real signs of cognitive decline and that every leader of every advanced free nation is scared to death he will be elected. I hope the local papers and TV stations in the areas hit by Helene (and probably Milton) will say loud and clear, thank you FEMA and shame on our elected officials for not supporting funding for FEMA.

Expand full comment

All the governors except DeSantis have been vocal about the WH contacting them before Helene hit; working well with them. Of course none of the governors voted against adding additional FEMA assistance for hurricane season to the supplemental to keep the government open. They aren’t holding up a vote on more $$ until after the election. That hold up is Speaker Johnson.

After it became public DeSantis was not taking calls from the WH or VP, suddenly he changed course.

And, polls don't pull actual voting levers.

Expand full comment

Same here in Ohio.

Expand full comment

I know I need to keep reminding myself of that. When I took statistics I never quite believed the theories about sampling and how a tiny sample can accurate reflect anything. But even accepting that, I never seem to see any info about how polls are being conducted? By phone is totally unreliable, responses on anything on the internet are totally unreliable, man in the street...totally unreliable. So how are they conducting these daily polls? But still I get so nervous reading the ones that say trump is ahead in the swing states.

Expand full comment

I'm not sure if there's any way to guarantee a completely random sampling. For example, phone polls are biased because the sample only contains people who were willing to pick up the phone and talk with a pollster. And then there can be discrepancies between what people say they're going to do and what they actually do.

From what I've read, the margin of error expressed in the poll result is typically only based on the sample size. Nothing about potential bias due to the sampling method(notice I didn't say "methodology") is included in the error estimation.

One Berkeley article I read said that, based on their research of data taken from previous elections, even a poll taken one week before the election has a +/-6% margin of error typically, as opposed to the often posted +/-3%. And that number gets worse the further out the election is from the time the poll was taken.

Expand full comment

Don’t read them it’s bad for you and they change eve day depending on who they ask! And where thrash them!

The polls are really off base. Young people aren't being polled and millions & millions of them have registered to vote in the last 2+ months. We're going to win this!

Expand full comment

I agree with you, I just don't know what the GOP is thinking. At least many have come forward and said they are not supporting him, but it's a small number (even if it is folks who know him well and worked with him). I have not read of any large groups supporting him, like any unions (that would not be expected), any major newspapers, and groups of leaders of Fortune 500 companies. There are a few billionaires here and there but they don't care about our economy, they will do fine if it tanks. As always I wish the media had been more proactive in asking all these trump supporters to be specific about what they support in his agenda...is it the rounding up of undocumented persons, and just how will he do that...go door to door and impinge on the live of American citizens, and are they ok with that? Becoming a dictator on day one with no plan for when he will stop being a dictator? And follow up with the question how is that American? How does that fit in with the concept of democracy and our Constitution that you have in the past sworn to uphold? I mean the media is just supporting all these folks. At least one GOP politician called out MTG for her absurd statement that the weather can be controlled, but there wasn't any uproar in the media that this is the kind of person trump wants helping him run the country. No one in the media ever seems to ask any one just what they thinking trump's great America will look like. Do they really want the American of pro2025? I guess they do because they sure support it and not the Constitution.

And Mike Johnson does not want to consider President Biden’s request for additional FEMA funding at this time. He wants to wait until after the election.
