Sadly the train has left the station. For 50 years Americans ignored the threat that was building. These rights that have just been attacked will not soon be restored. It seems that soon Americans will have to go to the streets and fight for fair election outcomes. How sad. Hope the trip to the mall on election day(s) was worth it.

In the state of Tennessee I doubt that whatever I email to my elected officials will do any good. BUT I want to let them know that I am mightily upset by what's going on in the country and in our State.

Yes a corrupt right wing SCOTUS is ruling our country & I’m outraged. Nominated by a corrupt president & pushed through by a corrupt senator. No wonder McConnell’s ex wife divorced him. She’s a feminist as are her daughters 👍

The court reads the election returns. It is time for Democrats to fight like Republicans, with a clear end in view, with skill and with passion. We (especially women) must elect Democrats to every available seat in the Senate, House, and state legislatures. Republicans are taking away rights one by one and they are not embarrassed by it. Delendi sunt.

I hope anti-choice representatives will be voted out of office in November and in the years to come. Former Supreme Court Justice Ginsburg, a champion of equal rights, made one mistake in not resigning while President Obama was in office. Will the eroding of our rights include the elimination of HIPAA laws and the privacy of medical information?

It's been a brutal, hateful,, and cruelly unholy work of abomination.

It's not clear whether this nation will ever recover from this brutal rape of law, precedent, and jurisprudence.

John Roberts has been a miserable failure in his job as chief. He has no legal, personal, moral standing, or leadership among the other five hard right members.

I share Dan's hope that there may be some light visible at the end of the tunnel, but my optimism is very limited.

I do not understand something… Mueller made it clear he was indictable for collaborating with an enemy and obstruction of justice, and that the reason he was not indicted and prosecuted then was because at the time of the investigation he was a sitting president. Mueller recommended that he should be indicted once he was not out president. What happened to that? Shouldn’t that indictment have come? And if prosecuted and convicted for crimes he committed to steal the election in 2016, should not all of his appointments and EOs and everything he did as an illegitimate, criminal, illegal president be erased? The bank robber does not get to keep the stuff. Seems so crazy that what he’s done can not be undone.

They’ve dealt devastating blows to gun safety, environmental protections, bodily autonomy, religious freedom…. They will have the opportunity to end democracy in the coming weeks and months and they have given indication that they intend to do just that. Intentional WMDs aimed directly at our lives, our society, our democracy, and the world. They grossly distort our Constitution and the tenets of Christian faith to suit their plan to disrupt and destroy and deliver chaos, to open the door for authoritarianism. We’re past the infant stage of fascism now in this country. And I’m terrified. How do I protect my grandchildren?

May this turn right veer back to moderation, truth and justice and humility. The direction will not stand with those of us who have awakened the sleeping lions!!

McConnel has been working on this goal for the past ten years with Ernest.

A Trojan horse in our midst.

We'll have to hope and pray that the Jan 6th committee provides enough evidence of guilt, for the president who wanted to be dictator, and all his political co-conspirators, that they will be put in prison for treason!

My point is that it is not just the Republicans that take advantage of having all the political levers in a particular state. Your writing made it seem as only one party was doing it

Mr. Rather

"or the will of the majority of the American people". Seriously, as I said in an earlier reply I am old enough to remember a lot of what you said in the past. I'm not sure what you were commenting on but I definitely remember you saying that the court was there to make decisions that may not be popular and may be in the minority of the people's sentiments but that is their job. It could very well have been the decision on the Pentagon Papers but I'm not sure if that.

For you to even write that is flately wrong and you know it sir.

I'm back to asking you if your column was written on a computer or a 1960's typewriter.

What are all the dates that you have posted this lame comment in an attempt to harass Dan Rather?

Thomas Jefferson, a founding father of and writer of our constitution wrote:" Religious institutions that use government power in support of themselves and force their views on persons of other faiths, or of no faith, undermine all our civil rights. Moreover, state support of an established religion tends to make the clergy unresponsive to their own people, and leads to corruption within religion itself. Erecting the 'wall of separation between church and state,' therefore is absolutely essential in a free society."

Isn't this pertinent to the actions of the supreme court today? Don't their actions, at least the 6 conservatives , feel like that they are pushing their brand of Christianity down our throats? I am outraged!!

Beautifully written commentary, Mr. Rather,

this is definitely true. The only chance we have, is to elect more Democrats from Congress , to the House and the Senate. It's also important to elect democratic officials to legislative positions in every county of every state. People have to hunger for freedom and democracy. We will prevail.
