I love the add - It would be a great tone to set for so many. I will hope but not hold my breath that this type of attitude starts to prevail.

This ad is sappy. America is a nation, not a marriage. We have broadly diverse views and cultures which are what makes us the greatest nation on the planet. The Federal government has no business trying to "fundamentally change our culture". When it does, it's certain to create division.

I have to laugh when I hear Democrats, the originators of cancel culture and censorship, pleading for unity. First be the change you want to see. Make sure your house is in order before trying to help someone else.

What is good for California culture may be abhorrent in other States. Don't use Federal government to enforce a monoculture, that is not it's purpose. Live and let live.

If we truly want unity, we can stop asking government to do things that it was never intended to do. Ideally government should only be concerned with infrastructure and law enforcement.

When we ask for things that we are capable of doing ourselves, we end up with the bloated bureaucracy we have today. We also get government meddling in our local culture, economy and businesses. This leads to division among people with differing opinions on who is deserving of the help.

A good man once said "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country."

The extent to which the country unites itself again depends entirely on the Republicans. They're the ones engaged in endless culture wars against everyone and anyone that is not "them." Democrats are for democracy (it's in the name), its essence being a cooperative pursuit towards the Greater Good. Republicans currently stand for the exclusionary mythologies of American Exceptionalism and the Prosperity Gospel, which reinforces both their economic and cultural visions of the country. Their religion furthers drives home this contempt for much of humanity, full of judgment and hatred towards people they deem as unworthy of their God's grace and mercy, while also providing infinite exemptions from responsibility for their own indiscretions. If they had their way, Republicans would hold absolute power forever, and in some ways, they've succeeded in their vision for the future, as evidenced by the current Supreme Court, and many state legislatures across the country, where voting percentages no longer proportionally translate to actual representation.

It does not seem that an appeal to unity or rationality will win any elections. The GOP has the rabid voters that the Democrats do not, and even though I do believe there are a lot of Republicans that do not support the likes of Rubio, DeSantis, Walker or Vance, I do not believe these folks will vote in states where they could make a difference. So the GOP will gain control and democracy will be lost, but all the red states will continue to expect the blue states to bail them out every time there is a natural disaster or their roads need fixing or they want to keep a rural hospital open. Great example of taxation without representation and in the past that sure was reason for rebellion. And to some extent every person in America who will be disenfranchised by the GOP (all women, all persons of color, all non straight persons) will have to accept some degree of responsibility for the loss of their rights and for the loss of democracy. They have had plenty of time to figure out what they need to do to vote in state wide elections even with all the voter restrictions, and there should be or should have been organizations working on getting all these people to be able to vote as soon as the voter suppression laws were passed. All the GOP has to do to win everywhere is keep the 65 or 70 percent of Republicans that love all things trump to vote, and even though this means there is probably 75% of the electorate that does not approve (all Democracts and 25% of Republicans) the GOP will win because their 25% of the electorate will in fact vote. I think perhaps a very important question is what are the disenfranchised going to do...if they did not vote, will they care enough to do anything or will they just accept their fate as second class citizens (or in the case of women and non straight persons less than second class, basically persons with no rights unless they are white and live in a district where their vote does not matter).

I LOVE the ad, but it EXcludes many, if not most, of those who will vote for Ryan's republican opponent. Ryan needs to be popping open a beer can rather than a bottle of wine. And, yes, I'm serious.

So refreshing to watch a political ad that employs positive images of working family life as a metaphor for the manner in which our politicians and their supporters could move this nation forward in a civil fashion.

I'm thinking of the Harry and Louise ads from 1994 here, but with a better outcome!

The imagery still works...

I love the ad and hope it strikes a cord with people. Unfortunately, I feel that that there will never be true bipartisanship again. The country is too polarized. It’s sad, what we’ve become.
