As a lifelong Texan and a female of reproductive age, there is truly nothing sadder than having to plan a move to another state just to get basic reproductive rights back. I’ve lived here my whole life, have my dear family here and would love to be able to plan to start my family here. I cannot however convince myself to accept the terms of the current agreement Texas has made for me and the millions of other Texas women of reproductive age here. If you want to have a baby: the scenarios are: get pregnant and have a flawless pregnancy, Get pregnant and almost die or get pregnant and die.

If you don’t want to have a baby: you can control for birth control if you’re lucky but even then you’re like really stressed all the time about the potential and honestly just really sad. Women are supposed to be leading their best lives in America.

I grew up looking up to Mia Hamm, No Doubt, Cheryl Swoops and Sally Ride. Women are equal with men and don’t deserve to live under this repressive and backwards regime.

Texas Republicans don’t care about women and any attempt to renegotiate the terms of an abortion restriction is insulting. Give us our rights back. Full stop. Those of us that are lucky and privileged enough to be able to move out of this state will and those that have to stay here - know that we are fighting for you and that you are just as important and strong as any man legislating your autonomy away.

Thank you to Dan Rather and to everyone who commented on this thread in support of a women’s right to choose. You are a bright light for women who are reading this and for women in your life. Thanks for supporting us.

Every time I read something about the deaths of women who have been specifically impacted by the overturning of Roe v. Wade, I am sick. I can't imagine the grief of those families who knew their women's lives could have been saved, but for this Supreme Court decision. Abortion should NOT be a legislative or judicial decision. It's a personal and medical decision. When it's taken out of a woman's hands, it's not dissimilar to the regimes of dictatorships that place women as second-class (disposable) citizens all over the world.

Thank you, Dan Rather, for helping us to see what is happening. I appreciate your efforts and your wonderful and I think loving way of writing.

For women texas is like living under the Taliban. That men in texas are okay with that is stunning.

No legislators should be allowed to practice medicine.

These legislators are bowing to the vocal minority of voters who embrace certain sects of Christianity. I can almost guarantee many of their wives, daughters, or girlfriends have had secret abortions. Hypocrisy at the least. Cowardess to fail to protect the rights of women who need abortions to survive a failed pregnancy.

Separation of church and state is fundamental. If you believe abortion is wrong, don’t have one. Don’t impose your religious beliefs on others.

"Abortion is evil-- except for MY abortion.' Of course, they also want to ban hormonal birth control (IUD. The Pill, Depoprovera shots, Norplant), pretty much everything bit barrier methods. I couldn't use a diaphragm or my husband a condom because I'm allergic to spermacides. The pill worked. But there is an age limit and as I hit 40, I was a,wreck. There were no good options left. I was thrilled to be menopausal.

What are you all facing now in America ?

Tesla cars being burned in Las Vegas and Calgary Alberta last week is a glimpse into your immediate future.

People have finally had enough abuse.

They will pull down the gates everywhere. No one will be safe.

Politicians don't make mistakes, they make "clarifications". Would be a joke if there weren't so many casualties.

It’s a sad fact of life that people who support MAGA won’t try to do the logical thing until their bad decisions impact them personally and negatively. Abortion bans, gun violence, cuts to social services, etc. In the meantime, the rest of us have to suffer under the current regime.

Texas Dems should impound Greg Abbott's wheelchair. And Vanderbilt University should take away his law degree for willfully disregarding women's interests.

I am pleased that you have stopped referring to Texas as the "great" state of Texas.

It isn't.

How did the “life” of the unborn take precedence over the life of woman carrying that unborn child? For that matter, those folks who claim the sanctity of life before it arrives, seem to have little trouble in sending other people’s children to fight and die in their dirty little wars. The hypocrisy is mind-boggling. The degree of chauvinism in the matter of abortion bans is astounding. The utter disregard for human life is all too apparent.

Babies in their view are innocence. Women who have sex aren't. They and their pastors also hate women, those evil temptresses

Exactly! I have always said pro-life is an oxymoron.

Let's face it, Texas Republicans, especially Greg Abbott and Ken Paxton, are full of hate and think women dying is just the cost of doing "bidness." The last Democrat to win a statewide election was Ann Richards in 1994. Her late daughter was head of Planned Parenthood. I

If you take away someone's rights, such as a woman's right to decide about her body, then all the energy is wasted on getting rights back.

Meanwhile, you all pay income taxes so that the Rothschild bankers can be sure that the interest on government debt is not defaulted.

Get rid of income tax.

Never pay on interest of government debt.

Usury was punishable by death in Europe prior to 1600s.

The Rothschilds will no longer live off the US taxpayers.

Those bankers will have to move to Israel, and then Israel will never borrow money from the US.

After all this happens, legislatures will admit an abortion is protected by the 9th Amendment.

Better idea: get rid of billionaires or close every loophole and, force them to pay 40%. And raise the amount on the payroll tax for social security. to the first 400\\K . The Rothschilds have nothing to do with it.

Anti-Semitic, are we? The reason Jewish people got into banking is because good Christians wouldn't allow them to work at anything else for centuries. Actually do some reading by respectable historians and learn some facts.

That should read is insufferable. Wish we could reinstate Roe versus Wade.

It has made me crazy since I was a teenager that some men think they know more about abortion than women and doctors. the current state of the abortion law isn’t insufferable.

Carol Morton's avatar

It occurs to me that someone might wonder if I had to have an abortion when I was young. No thankfully I did not, but I was much aware of the problem of their young women faced.
