Hello Steady Community,
First and foremost, welcome to summer. What a joyful season, and now that the solstice is behind us, we can embrace it officially. We fully subscribe to the sentiments of Henry James (as quoted in Edith Wharton’s autobiography, A Backward Glance): “Summer afternoon – summer afternoon; to me those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language.” Indeed.
This is a time of long days and even longer reading lists, of fresh fruit, picnics and trips to the beach, of ballgames wafting on the radio, ice cream cones, and blockbusters at the movieplex. It is also a time of travel and gathering with family and friends. The usual tempo of the work year is joyfully thrown into disarray. And that also holds true for our small team producing this newsletter.
As the title of today's post indicates (and we couldn’t help ourselves with the alliteration) the schedule of Steady will be a bit different in the coming months as we juggle our vacations and travel. We wanted to alert you that while there will still be plenty of notes hitting your inboxes, they might not arrive with our usual timetables.
To be honest, when we started Steady, we weren’t really sure about how we would publish. We fell into anchoring the week on Sunday because we recognize that we often share our thoughts with a substantial volume of words, well suited for the pacing of Sundays when perhaps you have more time to read and reflect.
Once we had Sunday settled, we added the idea of looking to provide uplift, namely smiles, to your week. Since we are suckers for alliteration, we made it “Smile for a Saturday.” We then fill out additional posts as news or inspiration dictates.
Some weeks this summer we may continue with this timing, but other weeks we may vary it. We intend for the overall amount of content to be about the same. But sometimes it may come in bunches, or there may be a period where you don’t hear from us for a bit. Never fear, we’re here. And for those of you who relish the Saturday smile, we are renaming it “Smile for Summer.” You never know when one might pop up.
Who knows, some of you may prefer this less predictable schedule and we may continue it into the fall. We shall see.
We thank you for your understanding and patience. One thing is certain: We cannot imagine a better group with whom to share this season, or any time of year. We hope you all have a great summer.
Thank you for the update. I do hope you will return more fully in the Fall as I look forward to your view of this scary time we are living in. I'm 67 and have never been more afraid for our Democracy than I am now. Your words calm me. Enjoy your summer!
