Amazing 93 years old and Willie Nelson is going strong. I suppose we need to appreciate him while he is alive before death lays claim to him. That song that Mr. Rather mentions was recorded 48 years ago.
I love this. Willie making Stardust at the height of his outlaw era is the kind of holy stubbornness that keeps art alive.
The record executives heard “standards album” and probably saw a career detour. Willie heard a living room, Booker T., old songs with good bones, and a door nobody else could see yet.
Stardust by Hoagy Carmichael was my parents' song, the one that they always recalled from their days dating before they married in the midst of WWII and Daddy went off to serve as a medical technician. My Mother had the sheet music for it, and she would play it on the piano. Sometimes my Dad, who was a tenor, would sing along. So that song holds fond memories for me of growing up watching my parents play and sing the song they both loved because of its connection to their love for each other.
I got hung up on the title song of the album. I should have mentioned "Sunny SIde of the Street" too...written by jimmy McHugh and Dorothy FIelds in 1930. Same situation.
Not to detract at all from Willie Nelson's lovely rendition, but I think that a beautiful song like "Stardust" should always be credited to the person who wrote it. It was Hoagy Carmichael in 1927, making the song nearing its 100th birthday.,,and the lyrics soon added by Mitchell Parish. It has been sung and recorded by countless artists over the years including several best selling records. It is a true classic, as is Willie, but don't give him all the credit!
There’s something quietly defiant about Willie Nelson making Stardust against industry doubt and letting timeless music speak. It’s not just nostalgia, it’s proof that conviction and taste outlast trends. That kind of staying power is rare and earned.
Outstanding!!! Like you Mr. Rather, we will never have another Willie Nelson! Keep up the good work! We the people and the nation need you. We know when it comes from Dan Rather it is true. Trust is in short supply today. We can always count on you, Thank you
Such a great video. Thoroughly enjoyed watching it. Willie and Tony are such pros. You know that, when they make it look effortless. Kinda like you, Dan. 🇨🇦🍁
Great stuff, Punkette!

🥹 Janet, thank you for sharing these sweet memories of your parents! Hug! 💖
Willie's voice has charmed me for decades! I was privileged to see him twice in live concerts.... What a thrill.
I even took one of his CDs with me to the hospital to play during labor. He just makes me say, "Ahhhh...". Love you, Willie!

Dan and Team Steady, thank you for this classic.
Dan, any chance for you and Willie to get together for another interview?
