Hearing this will always remind me of Rob Reiner now. Great choice. Thank you.

Our band did a passable cover of it in the 1980s but I had no idea of its biblical significance.

Thank you for sharing that story and song. Listening to the song, I couldn't help thinking about how the neighbors here in Minnesota are standing by each other!

What a beautiful piece!

I woke up this morning thinking about the Budweiser Super Bowl commercial. It touched me so deeply. To me, there was a message for us and our country. Take care of one another, love one another, and have fun. Because the Eagle cannot find its wings and soar without the horse. Very profound message! 😊

Thank you, Dan and all, for continuing inspiration. Indeed a great song and an important reminder that we stand together and that is our strength.

Wow. This triggered a memory from the mid 1980s. I passed by our daughters bedroom and heard her singing. She was shy and I had never really heard her sing. She was singing Stand By Me. She had a hell of voice. I went and got her dad and we stood in the hallway listening. She still has a great voice and all of us still love BB King.

Stephen Wilson Jr. has also recorded a beautifully haunting version of this extraordinary song.

An amazing and touching song that might even be in the top 3 of popular music!!! Love your posts. Will the world ever become sane?

I still have that 45 of Muhammad Ali's recording of Stand by Me. A beautiful song! Thanks for your post.

DearvMr. Rather,

I love this post, and love your messages. I grew up listening to you, so you are my “ voice of reason” and I thank you for that. In the Catholic school I teach at we have a song that has the lyrics of “ though the mountains may fall and the hills turn to dust, the love of the Lord will stand”. I’m fully aware of the awfulness of what has gone on in the Church and am by no means brushing that aside; however, I believe music and song can be a unifying force across all faiths and experiences. I thank you , again, for your gentle yet stern reminders that we are better than what we have been.

Thanks Dan once again for another excellent selection in your A Reason To Smile series. Ben E King was a singer and songwriter became well-known as one of the principal singers of the Drifters, a R&B vocal group. As a soloist King was best known as the singer and co-composer of “Stand By Me” which became a US top-10 hit, both with its release in 1961 and later in 1986 as the theme to the wonderful film of the same name directed by the late Rob Reiner. It also was a number-one hit in the UK in 1987. Thanks to you Dan and your Team Steady for once again giving us all another great Reason To Smile at the start of another week.
